Hello, GAF! This is the OT and recruiment thread for GAF mafia, also known as werewolf.
To play with other GAF members, read the first post.
To see the sign-up and waiting list, read the second post.
To learn more about mafia, read the third post.

Try and kill Palmer_v1 before anyone else does!

GAF now has a thriving mafia community with over 50 active players - and we're looking to make it over 100. GAF mafia works on a seasonal basis. Each season, we start a new batch of games, with a new batch of game-runners, each game having a different set of roles and flavour. Currently, we're taking sign-ups for Season Three - and we want you to take part! It's a fun game and a great way to meet new friends on GAF. We're extra friendly to new players.

Signing up is simple. Just post in this thread saying you want to take part, and you'll be put on the sign-up list. We give priority in order to:
  • New players on last season's waiting list.
  • New players.
  • Established players from last season's waiting list.
  • Established players by date of their last death, furthest to soonest.
This means new members are guaranteed a game! Don't worry if you miss sign-ups - you'll be added to the waiting list, which gives you priority next season. Some players also find they can't keep up and have to drop out, which means replacements are drawn from the waiting list, so you may still get to play this season!

GAF Mafia has a gender pronoun policy. Because players have to refer to each other throughout the game and we don't want to misgender anyone, we'd like to know your preferred personal pronoun - be it he, she, they, ze or any other. Other players will refer to you by that pronoun, and this will be carefully enforced. We'd also like you to respect the other players by being careful to use their chosen personal pronoun too. You are free not to disclose your preferred pronoun, in which case other players will refer to you as they - but please do tell us if you're choosing not to disclose, as if you try to sign-up without telling us, then we have to assume that you've not read this and we can't sign you up.

Be aware GAF Mafia is a significant time commitment. Ordinary games last about two months, although some special cases will be different (if so, this information will be in the games list). You will need to post at least once or twice a day, although we understand if you have to miss one every now and then. Please don't sign-up unless you can do this.

Most GAF games follow the same ruleset, and vary only in the number of players (approximately 18-27) and the roles and flavour used. Because of that, you'll be randomly assigned to a particular game-runner and their game. We make sure the ratio of new to established players is roughly the same between all the games in a season. However, some games will vary significantly enough from the basic ruleset that you can't be randomly assigned to them - they will be opt-in. If a game is opt-in, it'll be marked clearly in the games list, so if you want to play in that particular game, just say so.

Where you can laugh at all of our mistakes.

A really good way to get to grips with forum mafia before playing is to look through past GAF Mafia games and watch some of our current players in their first games! You also get to laugh at our expense. Here are GAF's completed games:

Woo-hoo! I'm proud to present the inaugural GAF Mafia Competition! I, Crab, will be acting as your moderator, and would like to warmly welcome you to the beautiful island of Sicily. The island's wonderful and fertile soils lead to it being a cornerstone of Mediterranean culture; a prized possession of the Roman Empire and a proud kingdom in the medieval ages. The weather varies between merely beautiful and outright gorgeous, sunny days looking over the deep blue waters. The nightlife is superb, with some of the greatest clubs you can encounter in all of Italy. Your hotel is quite lovely as well - plushy pillows in enormous beds, staff who wait on you hand and foot, a luxurious swimming pool to laze around in. There's only one problem:

The severed head of one of your fellow tourists, lying neatly on his lap, propped up in the atrium, and a note nailed to his forehead.

"The Cosa Nostra have decided that the owner of your fine hotel has failed to pay his dues, and each night he must be reminded of this failure. We shall kill you, one by one, until nothing remains but the honour of our family. The phone lines are cut, the roads are blocked: you must simply accept your fate.

You weren't sure who made the suggestion, but from among the other tourists a consensus emerged: if the roads were blocked, the Mafiosi must be hiding amongst you. Clearly, if each day, the tourists took the solemn decision of killing one of your number, then awoke the next day with no further deaths, then this terror would be over. Your heart set, but fear burning in your stomach, you nod, and discussions over who will be first begin. You can only hope that you survive this experience. After all, one should never go in against a Sicilian...

Hey, Traveler! Was that a one-way ticket you just handed the conductor? Oh, you're moving to a new village! Looks like you've finally chosen a place to settle down, huh?

Thanks to the ongoing neighborhood efforts of the Happy Home Academy, your new village prides itself in calling itself the perfect place to live. Sounds really promising, doesn't it? Doesn't sound scummy like some other Villages, does it? Maybe almost a little too good to be true?

No! Wipe that worried look off your face!

Trust me, I've met a lot of people on this train going the same way as you; but come to think of it, I've never met anyone moving OUT of that village. Weird, huh? I guess people must like it there that much...

Certainly, if something weird was happening, the Happy Home Academy would fix it, right? I mean, if I wasn't banished to this train as your humble, haunting guide, I'd probably still be happily residing in-

*the train whistle whines to a whisper as it pulls into the station*

Ah, but that's another story - yours starts here! Enjoy your new life in the village, and remember: mind your neighbors!

Season 3's games and their game-runners are listed below. Games with special sign-up conditions are marked accordingly. Additionally, GAF Mafia community is unique (as far as I know) in having a system for training new game-runners. Anyone who has completed at least one GAF Mafia game can apply to become a game-runner (contact me for me details), but a condition is that they must stick around for the next season to help the next batch of game-runners with their design. As such, Season 3's game-tutors are also listed below. If at any point you need help or have a question to ask, please contact any of game-runner or tutor (but you'll probably get the fastest response if you contact the one who is the game-runner for the game you are in).

Good morning, ISIS Agents! I’m happy to see that some of you managed to squirm your way out of your Green Russian-soaked dens of sexual deviancy to come to work today. Yes, I’m looking at you, Sterling. Please don’t sit in any of the chairs, I just had them all disinfected.

Anyway, I am literally shaking with rage! You all don’t seem the slightest bit concerned about the security of this office, and you’ve let someone infiltrate this agency! It’s probably those KGB bastards!

You’d think this wouldn’t normally be a problem, but that damned genetic clone of Hitler went off and accidentally unleashed some sort of toxin into the ventilation, leaving us all face-blind, nose-blind, and ear-blind!

…If I meant “deaf,” I would have said “deaf!” Clearly you can still hear me! Now shut up, all of you!

We need to find out who has penetrated our defenses and remove them…violently if necessary. But, I’ve just received a slew of new contracts from the federal government, and, well, the new golden curtains in my boudoir at home aren’t going to pay for themselves, so you’re still on the clock! I’ll be distributing your mission dossiers each day, so READ THEM!

And one last thing, do not, under any circumstances, come into my office without knocking. I have important business to atte- WHAT ON EARTH? Who dropped doughnuts on the floor? Don’t you know that’s how you get ants? PAM!

sigh

Whatever. Get to work, cretins.

Suddenly your cruise ship began to sink. You heard other passengers screaming. Some claimed to have seen giant tentacles before the ship perished. But that has to be the talk of madmen. Maybe you rammed an iceberg. Like the Titanic a few years back.

Thankfully you made it to this uninhabited island. Only 23 passengers survived. Hundreds were not so lucky.

Zatoth, the steward, reacted quickly when hell broke loose and managed to bring you safely to the island. By the looks of it you have enough drinking water and foods to survive a few months. Zatoth seems to know what he is doing and he assures you that rescue will arrive soon.

You will make it out alive, as long as the waiting is not killing you…

You awaken in a daze. You look around. You seem to be in a class room. You’re not sure what you’re doing there.

You remember who you are, but not where you are. You seem to recall being accepted to a prestigious school, Hope’s Peak Academy, and showing up at the door. However, everything after that feels like a complete fog.

You notice that there are odd contraptions on the walls, about the size of windows. Confused, you walk outside the classroom and wander the halls of a large expansive school. You hear what sounds a bit like movement coming from a set of large double doors.

With some trepidation, you open the doors and walk inside. The fluorescents burn your eyes for a moment as they adjust from the dimly-lit corridor you originated from. There, you find a gathering group of individuals in a gym.

The crowd seems to be forming around a spot near the center of the gym. The faces around you are frozen, pale, not a single person speaking. You edge your way closer to the focus of the group.

Lying in the center, was the body of a girl. A pool of blood had formed around her body. There was a large splotch of blood on her clothing which itself was torn at the spot. The way she stared off to the side blankly told you enough - that she was dead.

Suddenly, movement from further inside the gym catches your attention. From behind the podium on the stage you only just noticed, a large black and white stuffed bear bounces up atop the podium, arms flailing, a permanent half-grin across its face. It would only make sense in this bizarre nightmare that this thing was responsible for the body lying on the floor.

“Eh, sorry about that, I got a little carried away it seems,” the stuffed animal said. Its voice was shrill and cartoonish. “She woke up a little earlier than the rest of you. But she was planning to ruin the game for everyone, and I just couldn’t have that.” It was now that you saw the bear was brandishing a handgun in one of its hands.

“Oh, don’t worry, I won’t be doing this again,” it said throwing the gun haphazardly behind the stage. “Well, everyone is here, so let’s get started then!”

“Welcome to my Despair Academy! I am the headmaster, Monokuma. I’ve set this up as a training exercise to test new recruits for our cause. Who are we, you ask? We are the Remnants of Despair. We relish in suffering and sadism and all that good stuff,” the bear said with a laugh.

“As you might imagine, though, without a challenge it’s not much of a test! So, the rules will be simple… Have you ever played mafia? It’s just like that!”
upupu…

The sign-up list is ordered by priority. A player's personal pronoun preference is to the left of their name - [ f ] indicates she, [m] indicates he, [ p] indicates they, [ –] indicates no preference, and a marker (e.g.,[*] or [†]) indicates anything else and will be footnoted at the bottom with that player's choice. A [ ?] means either you were on last season's waiting list or haven't listed your gender pronoun, in which case your position will be held until you do either but can't be taken up.

A little introduction to mafia.

-----------------------------------------------
| Part 1 - the Basics |
-----------------------------------------------

Hello, all! First and foremost: mafia is really, really easy to learn. You can learn the rules by the game's first "turn" and be a pro by the end of your first game. New players are welcomed, and I hope you join myself and other GAF players after reading this. The vast majority of our players had their first mafia games here, too!

Mafia is a game about lying, and detecting lies. Invented in 1986 as Ма́фия in the U.S.S.R. by Dmitry Davidoff, mafia is a party-game with a rather morbid turn. In mafia's most basic form, players are assigned by the game-runner to one of two alignments: the majority to the Town, and the minority to the Mafia (known as the Werewolves in some versions). If a player is assigned to the Town, they know only their own alignment. If a player is assigned to the Mafia, they know the alignments of the other players assigned to the Mafia too. The alignment of everyone else remains a mystery.

The game alternates between a Day Phase and a Night Phase. During the Day Phase, all living players discuss and vote on who will be lynched. When the majority vote for a player, that player is lynched and are dead and out of the game. The game then enters the Night Phase, where the Mafia discuss and choose a kill, informing the game-runner when they've done so. The game-runner then starts the next Day Phase and announces which player was killed.

Town wins by lynching all the Mafia. Mafia win when they are equal to or outnumber Town.

-----------------------------------------------
| Part 2 - Additions |
-----------------------------------------------

If you got through the above, you're ready to play mafia. Congratulations! However, mafia is an infinitely flexible game. The rule-set described above is the 'core' of mafia, the simplest it can be, and is called 'Basic' or 'Mountainous' mafia. However, most mafia is played with the introduction of new roles, alignments, and mechanics.

For example, most games have Town Power Roles, which have abilities aside from just voting. The most common Town Power Role is the Cop. This player counts as a Town Villager (the ordinary role) in almost every respect - they start the game not knowing the mafia, and win when there are no mafia left - but have an extra ability: each Night Phase, they can select one person to Investigate. The game-runner then tells them if the player they Investigated is Innocent (Town) or Guilty (Mafia). This is a powerful but intuitive role found in many games.

That's not all! There are protective roles, like the Doctor, who can select one player each Night Phase to be immune from kills for that night; third-party roles, like the Lyncher, who wins if they can lynch a specific target; mafia power roles, like the Godfather, who appears as Innocent when Investigated; and so on. The core rules themselves can even vary, with Nightless setups (a Day Phase is followed by another Day Phase) popular in the mafia community.

This is means you play to your tastes - a game can be batshit crazy with many bizarre roles, or it can be the simple Mountainous.

Here is an excellent primer to both playing mafia and the most common roles: http://cataldo.freeshell.org/mafia/mafiascum04.swf. Well worth reading!

-----------------------------------------------
| Part 3 - Flavour |
-----------------------------------------------

Mafia isn't just restricted to the mafia! The game's theme is infinitely customizable. You may have wondered about the mention of Werewolves earlier - this is because the second most common version of the game simply calls the Mafia "the Werewolves". This theme extends to all the other roles - the Cop becomes the "Seer", and the Doctor the "Priestess".

This flavouring is also important to another part of mafia: the death scenes. When a player is killed during the Night Phase, the game-runner informs the other how they died, in full and gory detail. After all, how could we sleep at night without knowing that the player Geoff Keighly, with the Town-aligned role of Dorito Pope, died at the hands of a sabotaged Grifbal that rendered his wounds unhealable even to the Mountain Dew elixir? Don't be afraid to experiment!

How you can play a game of mafia with your nearest and dearest right now!

Here's a step-by-step walkthrough of how to set up and play a basic mafia game (a version known as 'Follow the Cop', or 'Classic') with eight of friends. All you need is some scraps of paper.

1. Appoint one person the game-runner. This person doesn't play and instead oversees the game, but face-to-face mafia is quite quick and they'll get a turn shortly.
2. Get 7 scraps of paper. Write "Villager" on 3, "Mafia" on 2, "Cop" on 1, and "Doctor" on 1.
3. The game-runner deals out the paper anonymously, so that nobody can see what another was dealt.
4. All 7 players form a circle, eyes shut and silent. This is the first Night Phase. The game-runner now says "Mafia, please open your eyes". Both Mafia need to open their eyes, identify each other, and decide on a person to kill by jointly pointing at that person. When done, the game-runner now says "Mafia, please close your eyes."
5. The game-runner now says "Cop, please open your eyes". The Cop now needs to open his eyes, and select one person to Investigate by pointing at them. The game-runner does a silent thumbs-up if they are Innocent (Town) and thumbs-down if they are Guilty (Mafia). When done, the game-runner now says "Cop, please close your eyes."
6. The game-runner now says "Doctor, please open your eyes". The Doctor now needs to open their eyes, and select one person to protect by pointing at them. When done, the game-runner now says "Doctor, please close your eyes."
7. The game-runner now says "Everyone, open your eyes." It's now the Day Phase! If the mafia selected to kill someone, and the Doctor did not also select that person, the game-runner states they are dead, reveals their roles, and describes how this person died.
8. The remaining players discuss amongst themselves up until a time limit elapses - 3-4 minutes for swift games, but veterans may extend this. After the time limit, all players must vote to lynch a player. The lynched player is dead - they are out of the game and cannot talk. After a lynch, the Day Phase finishes, and the Night phase starts. If no player has a majority vote, then nobody dies, but the game nevertheless proceeds to Night Phase.
9. Repeat steps 4-8 until one of the following happens: a) Mafia have more than or equal to the number of Town players. b) There are no mafia. If a) happens, the Mafia win (including any dead). If b) happens, the Town win (including any dead). The game-runner then describes either how the Mafia finished off the remaining players if Mafia won, or Town's happily ever after if Town won.

Congratulations! You played mafia and it was fun!

Just in case you have no friends.

As with all social-life destroying hobbies, the internet is more than happy to oblige. Internet mafia is big, and works in much the same way as face-to-face. There are some differences - there are usually less mafia roles, for two reasons. First is that you don't have facial tells or body language to judge by, making the job of town harder. Secondly, most internet mafia games allow the mafia to discuss via PM during the night phase, giving them slightly more considered actions. This means town needs slightly more support or better pro-town roles. The other difference is that games last longer - a day phase typically lasts between 3 days to 2 weeks (usually closer to the former), and a night phase between 1 days and 3 days, meaning longer mafia games can last around a few months.

Nevertheless, mafia in many ways can be more enjoyable on the internet, as ever more inventive roles and role resolution becomes easier for a game-runner to administer given PMs and the like. There are a number of large mafia communities and websites on the internet, and a good place to start is the (slightly outdated, but nevertheless very useful) mafia roles flash demonstration: http://mikeburnfire.deviantart.com/a...Roles-72597749 , and the mafiascum community's http://wiki.mafiascum.net/index.php?title=Main_Page .

For any board gamers that might be on the fence, Mafia/Werewolf shares a lot of similarities with some of the Hidden Traitor style games that exist. Some of the more common ones would be Resistance, Avalon, Battlestar Galactica, Shadows over Camelot, Dead of Winter, etc.

You all need to say your gender pronouns guys, come on. But yes, sign-ups are open, and the |OT| is complete! The only thing to change will be the game titles and blurb, and a very brief "your first day and night" guide that explains a few common strategies rather than just the rules.

Yeah...one of them is stuck. We actually have a second one working backwards through the list.

Also, sorry for murdering you, Coppa. :)

That would be very handy, can you PM it to me?

Looking forward to playing with some of the Star Wars guys as well as some new players. At least half of us were first timers in the last season so no one should feel intimidated about joining in!

Absolutely, of course you can - you're our first new player so far. I just need your preferred personal pronoun, then welcome to the games!

I'm finding some, but they need to be spoiler-free given that people like to spectate/watch old games.

Yeah, I noticed you were on that list (along with Matt Attack). You can always talk about the season 35 mafia game you'll be playing when the book gets to you in 2025 lol.

Also, I'll play again, male pronouns for me!

Good job on the new thread, Crab.

I'm really excited for the new games. Start signing up people, it's a lot of fun!

I use male pronouns.
