Absolutely fantastic game. It has my favorite atmosphere of any game. So alien and otherworldly. And visual design is masterul. It's linear but you feel lost, like you're actually exploring this place. The way the game guides you with visual cues and distant landmarks is brilliant

Good

Hook - Starts of with a very simple concept and like some of the best puzzle games It introduces more complex mechanics, minimalistic and short it may be but its worth the journey

Loot Hero DX - Fun while it lasts in a switch your brain off and loot till your hearts content

Luckslinger - More pixel graphics, rough but with their own charm, a game that doesn't take life to serious, a mix of hip hop happening tunes give this western the edge

Decent

Ninjahtic Mind Tricks - Early 8 bit platformer with more than decent controls, satisfactory graphics. If you yearn for 80's gaming then pick this up

Ok

Super Cyborg - Throwback to the end of the 8bit era – unfortunately they brought some poor controls with it.

Hordelicious - Twin stick shooter without inbuilt twinstick controls which would improve its pickupability

Coffin Dodgers - If mad racing games is your thing then you might want to give the old dodgers a go – there will be far more polished racers on the market but this has enough going for it to rise above the mediocre

Fighties - Never going to beat up Smash Bros controls are just not anywhere near tight enough for a genre that relies on them and its graphics while trying to be cute are sub par.

Big Fat Fail

Big Fish Legend - Crashed out with me every few seconds

Will get a few more in before the eom.

Divide by Sheep
Bloodily adorable puzzle game, with a puzzle mechanic that is as simple as it is intriguing. This is actual "number juggling", without going into deep maths. It still ends up pretty challenging with weird level elements, like a way to literally divide sheep and wolves that decimate your sheep populace, while at the same time can be used as blocking elements. Very nifty, highly recommended on PC as well, but the controls are probably a tad better suited to the mobile platforms.

Been playing this a little bit today and have encountered trampolines. When you have three sheep and a trampoline with two exits, is there any way to tell how the game will distribute them? It seems kind of arbitrary and I lost a level because it sent two sheep to the right instead of the left; there wasn't really any way I could see to plan for that outcome.

Been playing Stasis, it's so good. I'll be posting the OT tomorrow

Here are some tantilizing Twitter teases from people currently playing it:
I just finished Stasis. That was some fucked up shit. The best kind of fucked up shit.
Compared to Dead Space
It's horrifying in its own, more... personal sort of way.
---
The amount of grey hairs that I've developed since @StasisGame started playing mind-tricks on me is astounding.
---
Love the atmosphere in @StasisGame. It seems all fun & games until things get a lil unnerving. And then something scares the crap out of you
---
Ok so first 30 mins of @StasisGame oozing atmosphere, rocketed me back to the 90s in all the right ways.
Some late night time @StasisGame. So thick with atmosphere.
---
@StasisGame holy fuck I almost had a heart attack! Shame on you!
---
Playing @StasisGame...and oh fuck, I have to do what? I think this just might top Dead Space 2's eye needle moment
---
Finished @StasisGame this morning, still ruminating. Tis a good feeling.

There was a rule, but i forgot what exactly it was. It was something like its always trying to split evenly if possibly and then prefers a certain direction for the leftover sheep.

The arrows flash in the order that the sheep go. It alternates between the two (or more?) directions.

So if there are three sheep and a left->right trampoline, two will go left and one right.

Thanks, the game could really do with explaining mechanics like that!

(Unless I missed it)

I was looking in the games on OP and I'm wondering why Tembo was included, it's developed by Game Freak, the makers of Pokémon.

The problem is more about the fact that SEGA is editing the game. Maybe you are too young to remember SEGA, but SEGA used to be big.

Damn and i was quieter than normal.

Literally games are just disappearing under the deluge.

I suppose its also due to the Ludum Dare games, but still crazy.

Just got back from vacation and just caught up to this thread. Played an hour of Stasis this morning and died by being burned to death. The QL can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEbKq-R6ZN0

It's a nice mix of PnC/Myst in an isometric viewpoint with horror themes. All the clues are in the logs, but they trapeze the line of "Adventure Game Logic". It's a space ship, why is it so fraught with bugs?

There is also a bit of pixel hunting but if you've played PnC games before, you more or less can get on pretty easily.

Also Holographic Security system. Holographic. Security. There is no point of a holographic security system outside of scaring the hell out of you.

And it did.

**did a lengthier review**

STASIS feels like a AAA 90's computer game. The animation and visuals of the human models have a distinct 90's quality to them. It's not a bad thing at all, but for some reason the nostalgia center of my brain is going nuts while playing this game, even though it's brand new to me.

It also plays like early PnC adventure games. There is no hand-holding. There isn't a pop-up telling you what you need to do if you get lost. There are some modern twists like not having to switch your 'verb' as that is done automatically whilst also changing the icon to reflect the action, such as an eye-ball to see and having the text automatically appear. There is also PnC 'logic' which is kind-of whitewashed via the computer logs that you read, but still, some of the puzzles when thinking about it from a larger perspective don't make much sense. Why would a spaceship be fraught with so many bugs?

There are also some Myst-style sections/puzzles intertwined as well. Close-ups of panels that need to be operated. Nothing that is as hard as Myst-type puzzles, but some of the order-of-operations style puzzles that Myst seemed to have burned into my brain are present.

The atmosphere is executed very well. The isometric (Sidenote - I love isometric games) viewpoint is not only easy-on-the-eyes from a visual standpoint but facilitates the horror themes of the game. A fixed perspective with enough of an angle to foreshadow events is a great way to heighten suspense.

STASIS feels like a hidden gem from the past.

Recommended.

So Toma, or anyone else, playing STASIS? It's so good, took me about 9-10 hours. What an experience. I thought the ending was a tad rushed, but man, it was gripping and disturbing and gorgeous throughout

And game violence rarely makes me wince but these is a moment here that had me cringing like nothing since Dead Space 2's eye needle. Holy shit

Rain World's devlog could practically be a Unity tutorial at times

When hitting a corner I split the rope in two at that point and then apply the same logic on both the new segments recursively - stepping down in a tree like way until all the intersecting points have been handled. I actually only calculate distance for the points that are inside the sweep area, but what points are inside the sweep area is determined using a triangle/point overlap which calls the line/point distance three times

Working with Rain World has made me become pragmatic rather than idealistic when it comes to optimization - usually all attempts at optimization of stuff like this are utterly soaked by some pathfinding line that is called 14 000 times per frame, outweighing anything that could or couldn't be done differently in a thing like this astronomically. So I've started to gravitate towards writing the easiest, cleanest solution, and then if there is a performance problem optimize it. So far, no problem with performance! Most rooms seem to have less than 100 convex corners anyways, so it blazes through those pretty quickly. If I were to optimize however, I'd take out the tiles that are affected by the sweep and find the corner points in there frame by frame. As most swipes are probably very small and not overlapping any corners that'd likely save some time. For a non-tile based situation like your sketch you could divide the space into sections and only check the points in the affected sections.

I do think that the convex hull algorithm could be useful as an optimization in a non-tile based scenario, but it would have to be complemented by something, as not every convex vertex is necessarily part of the convex hull:

A lot of TIGSource devlogs tend to be pretty technical. Most of the Tumblr ones and other dev blogs are more posting progress rather than showing the behind-the-scenes of getting to that point

Had a look at some on TIG already but there is so much content on there its easy to miss out on the good ones unless you trawl through a fair bit.

The Gaslamp Games (Dungeons of Dredmor, Clockwork Empires) website is great, with a lot of humour and many "we don't know exactly what we are doing but here are the basics behind the thought process" bits.

I love reading those. Right now they are talking about monthly artwork marketing.

I've got to be honest, the indie scene kind of went by me in the last console generation.

Now, I am discovering all of these gems, that I never played before, like Brothers: A Tale Of Two Sons, Journey, etc...

What in your mind are the must play Indie games out there?

I have a PS4, a crappy PC and a Macbook Pro, as well as one iOS and one Android device.

Looking forward to your recommendations.

That is a hell of an open ended question, I could talk for months just recommending PC games alone. Just to get you started you should check out the 'best of 2013/14' threads. Lots of very very impressive games in there, many are also available for PS4 if that is more your thing.

What game genres do you particularly enjoy? We'll probably be able to give you more specialized recommendations if we know what you are into.

What kinda genres do you generally like?

Lone Survivor is great if you're a fan of horror.

Guacamelee is great if you want something beat-em-uppy and metroidvania-y.

The Unfinished Swan is great if you want a more relaxing adventure/puzzler with surreal elements.

Stealth Inc 2 is a great puzzle platformer.

Velocity 2X and Hotline Miami are great fast/twitchy games.

Those just a few I've played that I can vouch for.

Transistor is supposedly an absolutely amazing top-down action RPG. Idk, look into them at least. See what interests you. I also encourage experimentation...

Couldn't resist, all the reports of TPP's excellent optimization (better than Ground Zeroes!) forced my hand :p

Anyway, got my hands on the Jotun beta so I'll post some impressions later or in the September thread
