  • Relatos salvajes [Wild Tales] (2014), dir. Damián Szifrón - ★★★★★

Taking this chance to promote this movie as it was truly great. This movie needs more exposure as I hadn't even heard of it before this week. It's on the Canadian Netflix if anyone is interested. It's about the conflicts we choose, the ones we don't and how we deal with them. Perfectly executed. Direction is perfect. The acting is great. The stories are fun and hits incredibly close.

I was meant to watch this a while ago but slowly lost interest for some reason and now it's been sitting on my Netflix list for too long.

I enjoyed the film for the most part. I wasn't as keen on the last act of the film in
Austin, Texas
as it felt so disconnected with the spirit of the first 2/3, maybe that was the point?
Fassbender
is great as Frank and can somehow emote how the character is feeling very well from within the mask. There's some laugh out loud moments with how Frank behaves and some pretty sad moments as well as you uncover the depths of Frank's
mental illness
.

Other performances were good even though Maggie Gyllenhaal's character never really makes sense. I sort of wish we had spent longer in the seaside town at the beginning as I found it quite relatable as a songwriter in a very small town.

Anyway, it's got a lot of heart and I recommend it to anyone who's in to music/composing or band biopics.

My New Year's resolution was to read books and I think this challenge is a nice way to keep myself on track with that. Movies are no problem for me and I don't think I'll have a problem reaching 150 by the end of the year. That'll be a personal goal I guess.

EDIT: whew, finished my first book. My next book is In Cold Blood but it's really boring so far.

I failed this hard last year, but its worth giving it a shot, plus I have a few books I want to read. Anyhow, started off the Year right with Movies.

1. Hateful Eight 4/5
I liked it, not my personal favorite QT movie, but I enjoyed the tension and that ending, wish I saw it with the intermission but no big deal.
2. The Good Dinosaur 4/5
I really didn't think I would like it as much as I did, I know it was Pixar but it started and I remember thinking I wouldn't care for a dinosaur, but in Pixar fashion, I cried at the end...(I am a sap)
3.Star Wars: The Force Awakens 5/5
I loved it, it was a return to form and I liked all the characters. I don't know what else people wanted.
4. Magic Mike XXL 2/5
Watched it with my girl, found the whole story boring, but that dude is pretty good at what he does, and I know she got much more enjoyment out of it then I did :p.
5. John Wick 5/5
I heard a lot of good things about this movie before, didn't know if the praise would outshine it. It's just straight action, and I think Reeves is great (He is either great or terrible in his movies)
6. The Martian 5/5
I liked it a lot, I enjoyed the science parts and I am told the book does it better, so maybe that will be one of my 50.
7. The Revenant 3/5
I really liked the way this film was filmed, the shots were cool, that opening fight was great in the way it went from one person to the next pretty seamlessly, that said, the middle bored me a lot.

Huh. That's a tricky one.

I counted some shorter Japanese films last year (45-60 minutes) on the rationale that they could count if they were shown in a theatrical showing. Kung Fury was shown at Cannes, but I don't know if it had any major theatrical showings beyond that.

I'd say it's up to your discretion really.

This book was a test of my intestinal fortitude. So much disturbing imagery. This was difficult to get through, due in no small part to my aversion to horror. And body trauma.
I mean, there is a penis cut off at one point.
I really squirmed my way through this. I suppose I'll squirm my way through at least the next one.

I honestly can't follow this series. It constantly feels like I always just skipped a chapter and I'm just barely keeping up with the series. I mean, they went to rescue a character but I don't remember when they were captured? It honestly feels like this would work better as a cartoon or movie or something. I'll finish the trilogy, but I'm certain that I won't have a clue what happened.

I didn't dislike it though.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. You can always "make up for it" by reading shorter books, and read other things while you read those. And most people would count each book separately, instead of counting all of it as a single entry.

Thank for all the suggestions. I think for now, I wont count them, but I wont let that stop me from reading longer books. Most of the books I want to read are fantasy novels anyways.

Yeah I already have a small pile of shortish books on the bedside table for when I finish In search of lost time. I may split them into separate books depending on how I do throughout the year, still reading 50 books in a year will be a challenge either way.

I know its a little bit of a faux pas to some to include series, but this one was basically just a long documentary. Also I don't watch a lot of documentaries, so theres that element of extra newness.

3.- Making a Murderer- Kind of manipulative in how it presents the facts, but even so, it is very on point with the messages of corruption and ways media can bias us, that the series most wants to get across.

Just to muck the waters up a bit: what about a TV series event? Like a BBC series that is only two, three episodes long and would be a full-length movie otherwise?

Not something like Sherlock as that's a movie each episode, after all.

Already watched 13 movies. Someone stop me. Maybe the Netflix blockage isn't such a bad thing after all.

I also decided to try and get 5000 manga chapters and 500 anime episodes under my belt.

Books:

1. Raven's Shadow Book 2 - Tower Lord by Anthony Ryan. Impression and Rating - Solid 4/5. Though not as focussed as the first book in the series, this one does a great job of fleshing out other characters in the universe.

2. Raven's Shadow Book 3 - Queen of Fire by Anthony Ryan. Impression and Rating - A low 3/5. The finale is a meandering mess where too many point of views just end up hurting the overall pacing. Anthony Ryan did a pretty good job in the previous book, handling the different PoVs but he falters here and way too much of the book is focussed on journeying towards the EPIC FINALE, which is.... well, 'mediocre' is a kind word for it.

3. Nightblade Book 1 by Ryan Kirk. Impression and Rating - 2.5/5. A thoroughly mediocre coming of age story set in a pretty dark fantasy world. The premise and some of the characters themselves have at least some potential and that's the reason I kept on reading it.

4. Nightblade Book 2 - World's Edge by Ryan Kirk. Impression and Rating - A low 3/5. Slightly better than its predecessor, World's Edge is still just marginally better than average and suffers from the same stilted prose and inconsistent pacing that the first book suffered from throughout its 400 odd pages. The characters themselves are not without potential, but the quality of writing and the plot development ranges from terrible to average with very few flashes of brilliance.


Movies:

1. Hateful 8 - A solid 3.5/5. Certainly not Tarantino's best, but I felt it was worth watching at least once.
