Dragon Quest VII and VIII 3DS in the west. What once seemed impossible is now reality

I'm buying a 3DS just for this.

Despite my limited time to play rpgs these days. I'll definitely go out of my way to play through both DQVII and DQVIII again.. especially since I never finished either.

They didn't have nearly as much accent stuff in eight compared to their later localisations did they? Been a while since I played it.

The accents weren't as bad, sure. But there were still some terrible parts. Namely the area where everyone spoke in terrible fake "Moose and Sqvuirrel" Russian accents. The Roma and Italian accents were similarly poor, eh, ragazzo. As were the fake, really grating American accents in the casino town. Was pretty enjoyable when they stayed to British dialects, though. Overall the game was quite good and the core voice cast nailed it, but the modern localization choices for good or ill were fully present in DQVIII and everybody's been aping them to generally greater annoyance in the games localized since.

Sadly there's zero chance it's ever going to be done away with since the localizers do it to fluff themselves and a perverse contingent of the enthusiast press like it and convince the Japanese staff who matter that that is a universal opinion over here.

The pun overkill and accents does kind of annoy me but from my experience it's seemed to grab more of an audience than it pushes away. Usually haters are more vocal so even if there are less people that hate it, you'd expect to see more people complain about it then profess how much they like it, but that doesn't even seem to be the case here. The haters are outnumbered period.

I've even seen a not inconsequential amount of people that go as far to say that it's what they find as the main appeal of the series. Which... is kind of depressing to me but oh well I guess.

Thought I read somewhere that those translations actually carry over the intent of the original attack spell names, which were primarily composed of onomatopoeia in Japan.

There's 5 or 6 spells that do, yeah. For some reason they decided to just run with it and make almost all of them that way in the English translation though for some reason.

I was able to preorder the Pokemon New3DS bundle, which will replace my launch 3DS... Mainly bought it because I wanted the nicer 3DS for the two Dragon Quest gmes (And Bravely Second).

I figured since I'll be spending 200+ hours on those three games in 20-6, I should have something really nice to play them on.

No, it's not just 5 or 6. There might be that many that directly relate to common onomatopoeia, but in Japanese, onomatopoeia is a much more prominent language feature. People create their own all the time, and they become integrated into regular speech, and even used as parts of speech other than nouns. It's also important to note that in japanese, these words don't have to relate to an actual sound. They can be associated with silent actions. Even smiling has a word associated with it (nikoniko). Essentially all of the spells in DQ games could fall under one of the three types of onomatopoeia words in Japanese. The way they decided to render these in English is as perfect as I can imagine, honestly.

I much prefer the new spell names in both Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest to the chaos that was the prestandardized days.

Also more puns. Can never have too many puns, especially slime puns.

I didn't mind the the standardization changes for the most part except for DQIV, which is my favorite one. I played through the DS version a few times and still can't recall most of the town name and character name changes. It'll always be Cristo, Brey, Burland, Dire Palace, etc. to me.

Can you give me 4 or 5 examples that aren't the obvious ones like Mera and the other elemental spells then?

Because even when looking for sites that specifically try to give possible origins to the spell names like http://www.geocities.co.jp/Playtown/8141/kousatu-kyoutuu-jumon.html and http://blog.livedoor.jp/doghand/archives/13429637.html the only onomatopoeia ones are the elemental ones that I had in mind.

For the ones that aren't obvious, they tend to stem from words for actions or states, in an attempt to turn them into onomatopoeic words. For example, hyado comes from hiyatto (chill/cold). Moshasu comes from moshasuru, to transform. Medapani comes from medama ga panikku (eyeball panic). Baikiruto comes from baikiru which means double cut. Zameha comes from mezameha, awakening wave. The words are stylized very similarly to how the English spell names are.

Like I said, Japanese has an expanded concept of what onomatopoeia is. Beyond the usual kind we're used to in English, there's also words to depict things that don't make a sound, or non-auditory senses, or mental states/bodily functions.

I'm getting both since I'm on a DQ binge. I finished Dragon Warrior twi months and I recently found DQIV CIB on a Gamestop, so I'll be in the hunt for the other two DS entries. I'm also looking for one of those Slime Touch Pen packs on Play-Asia.

What Nintendo needs to do is release Dragon Warrior 1&2, DW3 and the Monsters games on 3DS VC to generate hype.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but the Japanese version of 8 used midi music, while the US version was rerecorded with a real symphony. I would assume the 3DS version uses the better music?

And apparently the 3DS version is slightly censored

FFS, are those "censored" pics on the right from the Japanese version? Was it like that in the ios/android version as well?

Can't believe they changed Jessica's swimsuit outfit like that. Was that SE or Nintendo's decision?

I'm actually looking forward moreso to Dragon Quest VIII. I never owned a PS2 and I wasn't about to buy the game for my phone, so I'm pretty ecstatic about this. I'm a big fan of ambitious adventure-style JRPG's with vast scales and free camera control; there technically being no random encounters helps even more.

Hmm, there seems to be a problem with DQ8 crashing N3DS models in Japan rarely upon closing the game from the home menu or with the power button. Doesn't look like anyone has lost save data though because of the nature of the freeze.. I imagine that will be fixed in localisation if a patch didn't already fix it. Could a "stability" patch have fixed it if it's not entirely the game's fault, I wonder. I'm counting on you to fix it NOA/NOE, I bought a N3DSXL.

Square Enix, it had nothing to do with Nintendo. It might have something to do with changes to what can be in a CERO A rating in 2015 versus 2004, only thing I can think of. The Android version perhaps didn't need to be re-rated in Japan? Nothing else is censored whatsoever.

Well, at least it wasn't just censored for the localized version. But I still think It's kind of pointless, since neither original costume is all that bad. And part of the fun of VIII was watching Jessica's outfits get skimpier and skimpier. Lol.

Censored or not, I'm still buying them to support the localization of my favorite VG series of all time.

I was excited for DQVIII until I saw this video:

Yikes, forget about the visual downgrade (which is also bigger than I expected, I mean no shadows?), 5 second loading vs almost instantaneous is kind of bad. I don't know if that's on new 3DS or regular, though. I assume it's better on N3DS.

Anyway, super excited for VII at least!

^That's the cost of no random encounters I guess. Being able to see those slimes is worth it for a 2.5 second loading increase.

Without the accents we'd all be wanderin' around like 'eadless chickens.

I sort of like them but don't have much of an opinion, except I love the British accents when they're voice acted.

I'm insanely happy for this, I really am. But I'm also just as concerned. With the NX Platform on the horizon, we could be very well facing the end of the 3DS's life cycle. If this ends up being the case, it'd be a damn shame for these games to be mostly abandoned. I just hope that the localizations come out during the summer so they can have some time in the sun before the new devices come in & take over. This fear is why I'm unsure that we'll get the 3DS version of DQXI in the West.

PS4 version is definitely coming and probably is the one to get anyway. Sucks for people without a PS4 (like myself) or people who would like to play both versions.

I doubt 3DS version is coming, though everybody was also skeptical about VII and VIII, so who knows?

The way they measure load times is deceptive in that video. Notice they stop the counter as soon as the battle dialogue box comes up, but this fails to portray the fact that the PS2 version takes an extra 2 seconds after that to actually input your commands compared to the 3DS version.

When both things are taken into account it's more like 5.5 seconds for 3DS vs. 4.5 seconds for PS2. 3DS is slower but it's not as significant as that video makes it seem.

(also the New 3DS does not improve those times)

I have VIII on PS2, but years ago it gained a scratch somehow, I am assuming from the PS2 Slim, as I am very careful with my disks. It wont load at all.

I kinda want to play the game, but, I dunno if the 3DS version is going to be all that good really.. Probably should just replace my PS2 disk.

That's a good point. Now that you mention it doesn't seem as bad. Still a bit disappointing, but the faster battles will probably even this out.

The 3DS version has two new party members, and I believe some other new content/refinements. You can increase the battle speed to help with level grinding for example.

The graphics took a slight hit, but it still looks good to me. It's your call, but I'm waiting to replay it on the 3DS

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
How long is Dragon Quest VII 3DS compared to the PS1 version? I know the PS1 version can reach 100hrs.

God bless you if you want to play a 80 hours plus jrpg on a TV, but for me handheld is the way to go.

It could be 2018 before it's localised and ready to release, what makes you think the 3DS will be viable then, at least outside of Japan? It's nice to want things. Looking forward to the PS4 version personally.

Guys, looking at the recent famitsu scans, I think that Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3 is going to be localized, they have support for usa and other flags in multiplayer if im reading them right.

To be fair, those flags exist in the non-localized Monsters 1 and 2 as well. You can list your country as USA and other countries while playing the Japanese version.

Though the fact that they went out of their way to put the USA flag in advertising material could be taken as a subtle tease that they'll localize it.

I think Joker 3 being brought to the West depends on the success of these two mainline games first and foremost, USA flag or not. Pretty happy for at least this victory, and frankly I don't think we're getting any of the other 3DS DQ games. XI will be very late and the rest aside from VII and VIII are spin-offs. I'd rather relish this victory alone. Only VIII did I feel had a small chance of coming, not VII. Never got to play these two specific games in their first run and didn't even have the hardware for VIII. Now it's been greatly enhanced and VII remade from scratch.

They used US flags in advertising material for those too. I would definitely not put any stock in that.

Might not be the good thread to ask this, but what is the status of those games in the West ? Do we have a release date ? Cannot seem to find informations
