So about ten and a half years ago, I posted in this thread about a cancelled Akira game that THQ was working on for Genesis, SNES, SEGA CD, et al. I described playing it at an old Summer CES and vowed to find the sales sheet for the game that I was given at the time.

I might as well quote myself from that old, old, incredibly old thread:

If I remember correctly, it was announced for Genesis, SNES, Sega CD, Game Boy, and Game Gear, although I believe that the Genesis version was the only one on display on the show floor.

The main gimmick of the game was that each stage played differently. Lemme see how many I can recall...

- A motorcycle racing stage that was a lot like Super Hang-On. As you would imagine, you were Kaneda racing against the Clowns.

- A FPS stage where you were Tetsuo wandering though the lab where he was being experimented on. Instead of a gun at the bottom of the screen, you just saw Tetsuo's hand, and when you fired at guards, he shot out a blast of psychic energy. This stage was about as impressive looking as a FPS could look on the Genesis.

- A side scrolling stage where you were Kaneda and Kei piloting that hover vehicle through the sewers. These stages weren't strictly side scrolling, though, as they were quite large and maze-like. You could fly quite a ways up and down as well as left and right. You used the gun on the vehicle to shoot down the guards' crafts.

- An isometric stage (think Viewpoint) where you were Tetsuo walking across the bridge (the one he would eventually destroy). Pressing the attack button caused him to swing his arm out in front of him, sending a wave of psychic energy out in front on him. The main enemy that I recall in this stage were rows of soldiers armed with the laser cannons from the movie. I remember being really impressed with the look of the Tetsuo sprite on this stage (complete with his tattered red cape).

- The last stage that I remember was a 2D beat-em-up (or was it a one-on-one fight?). Either way, you were a surprisingly large mutated Tetsuo attacking, well, whoever it was attacking you (Kaneda? Soldiers? I don't remember).

Seeing as how I was a big fan of the movie at the time, I talked to one of the head PR people at length about the game. She even gave me an animation cel from the movie (of the giant teddy bear and rabbit that attacked Tetsuo), which they were probably giving out to the press.

Even though I was just a scrub working at Babbage's at the time (yes, I was one of those retail kids who snuck into the show), she gave me her business card and I kept in contact with her for a while getting updates on the game. Until, of course, she gave me the sad news one day that they had cancelled it.

Man, I really gotta find that sales sheet now.

WELL, HERE WE ARE!

(larger version here)

When I finally found the sales sheet this past weekend (it was buried in a box at my parents' house), I also found a sales sheet for Ranma ½: Anything-Goes Martial Arts for SNES. Originally released in Japan as Ranma ½: Chougi Rambuhen (it was the third Ranma fighting game for the system), Toho was going to release it here, but eventually cancelled those plans.

So here ya go!

(larger version here)

I just wanted to share these with everyone and ask if anyone else has any other mementos of 16-bit (or other eras, I suppose) games that never saw the light of day.

There were several Ranma fighters in Japan, most likely they canceled a localization rather than development.

The Ranma game that was released in the U.S. was the second game in the series. The first Ranma fighting game was altered and released in the U.S. as Street Combat.

Didn't a Ranma 1/2 game get released in the states but the spritework was changed because they didn't have the license or something like that?

Edit: And right above me. Street Combat. That's the one!

I'm pretty sure the sprite work changes hand more to do with making it appeal to westerners.

PC Cocoron for the PC Engine Super CD was a game I read about in Gamefan in several issues but was never released. It seemed pretty far in development too. Cocoron for the NES was a fun sidescrolling action game where you could mix and match body parts to create custom characters. I wonder if some beta will show up some day because it looked cool.

I wonder what the Game Gear and Game Boy versions of Akira were going to look like since I doubt they could have done half the stuff the console versions were trying to do.

Awesome find though! I wonder if the prototype is floating around anywhere, I know HG101 did an interview with a THQ archivist and he said THQ didn't have any backups from that era in their records so I wonder if it's just lost to time.

Fun fact: Cocoron was made by Akira Kitamura, the "real father of Mega Man". Timely, huh?

There is a PCECD Cocoron prototype in the hands of a Japanese collector but no-one's been able to convince him to part with it, as far as I know.

I believe there's also a Mega-CD Cocoron game/prototype floating around somewhere.

It's always cool to see threads and ideas come back FROM DOWNTOWN like this. Thanks, Phil!

It's funny, though; the Akira game seems like it was pretty far along, going by the sales sheet, your report, and the video. Did the PR person ever have info about why the game was canned? Any hope of ever finding a proto?

From what I've heard, they bit off more they can chew and couldn't really pull off all those different styles on the hardware they were targeting, plus the license changed hands which meant new management and new demands about how the game should play, and it all fell apart pretty quickly.

I've heard there are EEPROMs out there with data from some versions of this game but they're definitely not complete and I don't think the non-CD versions ever got very close to recreating everything shown in the video.

It's too bad the third Ranma fighter never made it out over here. It was much better than the previous two titles. It was later followed by a PS1 fighter that was total garbage. They also released a puzzle game and an RPG on the SFC. Then there were titles on the Gameboy, PCE, and Mega CD. Shame we only got one game officially in English.

There were at least 3 or 4 Ranma games on the PC Engine CD

It's never too late! While they're getting expensive, you can still get A1200s in very good shape (even "brand new") from Petro Tyschtschenko (well he still had some two years ago, recovered from a shipment that never made it to India). Price shipped worldwide at the time was 200 euros

You're thinking of the second Ranma 1/2 game, and it was released in the US and Europe under "Ranma 1/2 Hard Battle". The title in the OP is Ranma 1/2 "3" in Japan and was never released overseas.

This is footage from a cancelled Sonic game based on the Archie and "SatAm" cartoon. If I remember correctly Sega STI was in charge for developing it hence the more American style and odd gameplay. This was probably cancelled cause it was a really turbulent time for Sega and all its subsidiaries so this along with two other Sonic Games were cancelled around this time.
