I went through 134 pages of your NX news reactions to find all these dumb mockups

I'll go ahead and add to this mock-up madness:

:p

Thats what I actually first thought of.

Thought these many concepts deserved their own thread. First, here's what Eurogamer gave us as a working concept:

And we were reminded of this old WiiU prototype:

So NeoGAF got to work.

Leizt had a lot of angles on this one here.

This is mine and I'm dumb because I didn't read the actual report.

Why

Why does everyone think the controllers will snap together into one piece? Wii Remote + Nunchuck baby this is the natural evolution of that mixed in with the Wii U Gamepad.

Lazy Couch Gaming Extreme with two NX Remotes in your hands laying at your sides as you slouch and play.

I'm imagining the additional controllers now, they come in sets of 2 and they look like Wii Remotes but with analog sticks or Circle Pads more likely, and deep grooves on the insides so you can plug them into the rails on the sides of the NX Screen. That way you can customize your console/handheld too, even mix up colors.

Edit: Like this I guess

Why can't it be just the same size as an iphone 6/6 plus? The home button could be the analog nub, im sure four small face buttons could fit on the other side.

Instead of this monstrosity which is just way too big even for regular adult hands.

You've never seen a Wii U in real life, have you? :) This is not the actual GamePad.

Thanks for doing the compilation, OP.

Tingle one is something special. :lol

I don't think you'll have fully functional controllers as we understand them on each side of the gamepad, it'll probably be more of a Wiimote/Nunchuck situation.

Wow. Your mock up turned out to be pretty accurate! Or was the NX already known at that point? I imagine not, right?

I think there was news about Nintendo changing its internal hardware divisions and it made sense to me that they would focus on a singular project.

Lazier than usual, detachable at the red line. All the processors, memory. and such are on the top part, the bottom part is just a battery (for the handheld or the controller).
It's very ugly so I might make a mock up later, but it looks perhaps more comfortable as a controller than most I've seen here.

I doubt this thing will be as big as the Wii U tablet.

I'm thinking more this size max:

aroXx5Z.jpg

I know this looks the most horrible but probably the most comfortable. I don't like 2 attachments at each side. Should be 1 bottom attachment. The wideness of holding a Wii U tablet gave me hand cramps

OK so I thought I'd better illustrate my point and fired up Photoshop. Quick & Dirty:

Here's what I'm imagining:

With hands (approx. same size as the Wii U Gamepad):

Here you can see the rails:

Here it is docked acting as a sensor bar, sides act as Wii Remotes:

Mix and match colors from buying additional controller packs:

I dunno. I like the concept of them snapping back together and forming a "classic" controller too, but I really really love the Wii Remote + Nunchuck "broken" controller setup (also used with the PS Move + Nav Controller, and the HTC Vive controllers).

This way the NX is both an evolution of the Wii controller tech, the Game Pad controller tech, AND something new. If you dock it plugged into an HDMI and TV, the image on the screen would shoot to the TV. Or if you're traveling, and you don't have a TV to plug it into, the screen in the dock would act as the TV.

I honestly haven't read a lot of the rumors but a lot of these mock ups show that the portable version is just the screen. Was that part of the leaked information? I would hope it has actual buttons.

The rumors say the portable is the screen and the controllers. When you get home, you remove the controllers and put the screen in a dock.

The unknown is whether or not you snap the controller halves back together at home for a more classic controller shape, or if they remain separate like the Wii Remote and Nunchuck.

Good stuff! If it was more pocket friendly I'd be all in for this concept. I dunno how they'll do it, but I reckon Nintendo will keep the clamshell aspect somehow.

Yeah I really love the clam shell design and I'd hate to see it go but I can't really imagine something the size of what the rumors describe being a clam shell design. Maybe they'd make a shell you could snap over the middle part for traveling?

But I don't think they're gonna aim for pocket-sized with this, the controller halves would be far too small that way. Can you imagine having just the Circle Pad and buttons off of a 3DS? Too tiny!

But I think Nintendo is aiming more for the PSP/iPad Mini sizing where it maybe gets its own little travel case or special bag rather than sticking it in your pocket. Or maybe if you wear cargo shorts you could stick it in one of them. I just can't imagine it being pocket sized AND having snap-off sides that function as controllers when docked. Even in my concept I had to cut out a lot of extra space on the Wii Remotes to get them to a reasonable size to fit next to the screen while not being too small.

Also something I missed, if you were playing at home there's no way to pause with just the controllers. I'd move the Home button to the left controller, between the Circle Pad and D-Pad and nudged inwards a bit so it's easily reachable by the thumb but not in the way to get hit accidentally. Pause button would go in the same place, but on the right controller.

So is the controllers be detached to create two halves of a controller or two unique controllers?

Yes I used the word controller 3 times in a sentence. Sue me.

So, does nobody suspect that the controllers might use the integrated screen and buttons we saw in that patent (and hoax leak)?

I think the lack of physical buttons in the patent works well with the detachable controllers. So the mockups should have something like four circle pad pros. Maybe with a screen underneath to simulate buttons or directions?

Basic situation is then like this:

And when the individual controllers detach, the built-in gyroscope changes the location of the buttons on the screen below the circle pad like this:

Unknown at this point but I'm of the opinion that they would be too small to snap together and make something comfortable, plus I'm bias and love the Remote + Nunchuck combo.

I guess if the over-all shape was more like the original Classic Controller (oblong disc) then it'd work snapping them together. Maybe then it could be a clamshell design too where the top half doesn't have a screen on it or another it's just a lid that protects the screen and keeps the buttons and Circle Pads from getting pressed/moved while in a pocket or bag.

I personally think it won't be pocket sized and the screen will be at least the same size as the Wii U Gamepad. That way UI elements won't crowd? Maybe? Smart phones seem to manage with smaller screens but they're also WAY higher def than Nintendo is likely to go.

If the rumor of the sides snapping off into controllers for when the screen is docked is true, I don't know how that could work.

These threads make it really easy to go back later and say, "See what crazy ideas we had!? HA HA We were so off!"

It didn't happen so much with the Wii U because the rumors made for an easy guess. "Let's put a screen in the middle of a Classic Controller Pro" *GamePad is basically that* "Oh."

True.
I wasn't sure why the threadtitle is what it is.
It could have been: all NX mockups here.

Wait a second, didn't Nintendo in an interview recently also say that they're potentially looking into controller attachments for mobile phones? If so, maybe the Attachable controllers are something you slide the tablet part into, similar to the GameVice:

gamevice-image_1280.0.0.jpg

...maybe these controllers use Bluetooth (Makes sense, since Nintendo is using Bluetooth since the Wii) and there's just a fairly primitive way to attach these things to the tablet, which might also be able to attach to other tablets?

If you could then stream the NX video to any device (including tablets), you could end up not even needing the tablet portion and just use your iPad to play Nintendo games. Then Nintendo could either sell you a full NX kit (2 controller attachments + screen) with the display or you just buy the 'controllers' (which are really just a handheld) and attach them to whatever tablet you have -> Boom, multiple form factors solved.

This makes sense to me but I think they'll go bolder

I don't understand why they would go for this form factor and not stick with a DS-ish clamshell, where the bottom half plugs out to be a standalone controller.

Two wiimote-esque controllers on the side would make the handheld enormous.

I feel the same, but I imagine they will be pretty slim and overlap the bezel, don't really want exposed connectors hanging out of either part. Leizt's pictures are a good example of how they could realistically connect.

Here's what the Nintendo NX could look like

So, it seems like the Nintendo NX will be a hybrid console.

It's a handheld, but you can snap the controls off and slot the rest of the device into a base station to turn the whole thing into a home console.

Some have had trouble visualising exactly what that would look like. So, thankfully we have tireless nerds on NeoGAF to help fill in the blanks.

Here are a bunch of mock-ups that might help explain what the NX will look like.

Lol at the bolded.

because it seems local multiplayer anywhere is part of the concept, so 2 controllers have to be attached to the system/screen.

all those mockups look really dumb.

no fucking way that one of those will become reality.

what shocked me really was, when someone back in 2003/2004 already knew that there is a dual-screen which will be able to output glass-less 3d. this post shocked me the most in retrospect.

if you'd ask me, it would be a simple 3ds-similar-shell-designed controller, which can be used in a dockstation or used portable.

nintendo has a clever design which looks playful, so i hope they come up with something sturdy.

the only bad designchoices were the original nds and virtual boy. everything else looked quite superb.

These ones make the most sense, but the clickable scroll-wheels are missing in the first two. Not sure how you could add them. For the split use of the two sides you'd have to make the stick assymetrical with the left one below to have the wheel at the top left corner and the right stick above to have the wheel at the top right corner when you hold them so that the rounded side is above and the sticks are always on the left.
