...meh. Nothing really exciting there. I'm sure it's very impressive technically, but it's not putting out something that grabs my interest.

For an engine to catch on it has to have quality tools, pipeline, support etc. UE3 is nice technically, but the reason Epic is running circles around other engine providers is because they have excellent tools and support. |

Jesus christ, this looks amazing.
And finally, for the first time, silky smooth. Still not getting it at release though, it's the kind of game that ships with a graphics card, so I'm sure it'll come with that when I buy a new graphics card in '08 or '09. |

From what I can tell a game like Gears, Metal Gear, etc is doing everything in a far more brute force method than Crysis. The Cryengines rely on height fields and instancing technology for the majority of their environmental graphics. These methods of rendering are quite a bit faster and much more efficient in the memory department. They also LOD quite nicely so visual quality can remain quite high. Not to say the other games don't have their own tricks, the same or otherwise, but we haven't seen Crysis knock out a big city type environment, only landscapes.
At the end of the day Crysis looks stunning and I look forward to it. |
