Playstation 3 Playable at TRU NYC #1

Just an FYI, you can play a bevy of PS3 games now at TRU in Time Square, NYC.

I was there today getting FFXII at lunch break, and noticed the contruction... they are setting up all their PS3 stuff, and they have demo units available already. No one was really there, so it must be new.

k go have fun.

I've shopped in that Times Square TRU... what madhouse that place can be! The entire place, not just the game section. As if it isn't bad enough on weekends, I imagine once word gets out there's a PS3 you won't be able to get IN the friggin game section.

Does anyone know for sure when the Wii demo stations are supposed to be up and running?

I find it funny how large their Nintendo section is, vs all the other systems.

I didn't ask, but there were no signs they were setting anything up for Wii in their gaming section. PS3 look to be taking a hge chunk... unless they are removing the GC stuff, they may have a separate location for Wii.

Well, I'm not sure why he says that, but I'm guessing it is because video game consoles usually show a tremendous level of popularity directly before their launch. Combine this with the fact that Times Square is a tourist attraction within the tourist attraction that is New York City, and then consider the physics issue of matter not being able to intersect other matter, spatially speaking, and you can see how it would be difficult to enter an enclosed area that has already reached its maximum occupancy.

Sony may cut PS3 Japan allocation to 80,000 units
Published: October 30, 2006 11:58 AM PDT
by Marcus Lai

Japan website Nihon Keizai Shimbun on Monday reported that Sony will ship only 80,000 Playstation 3 units to Japan on Nov. 11 due to a delay in part production.

Sony previously said that it would deliver 100,000 units to the territory on Nov. 11.

In Sept., Sony said it would cut Japan and U.S. launch quantities to 500,000 from 1 million units. The U.S. is expected to receive 400,000 units when it drops to retail on Nov. 17.

A delay would mean loss in sales for the next Playstation machine, which will include the advanced Cell processor and Blu-ray disc drive.

Sony last week announced a 94% drop in profit, partly due to the a price cut for the 20GB PS3. The company lowered the price of the 20GB SKU to $430 U.S. due to strong competition from Microsoft and Nintendo.

Microsoft will debut a Xbox 360 Core System to Japan on Nov. 2 for $256 U.S. Meanwhile, Nintendo will drop Wii to Japan on Dec. 2 for $212 U.S.
WTF, Sony?

Why is there no game list in this thread yet? This thread is useless without knowing which games are featured on those kiosks.

TRU has a lot invested in the Wii... I hope it does not get as bad as Reggie going to TRU and not NWS on midnight launch

Oh god, not this again. I'd hoped that Xbox 360 sales finally showed people that a "false shortage" only hurts you?

What would be smart is if Sony announced all these supply restrictions and then had tons and tons of systems. Otherwise there's nothing to it except shooting yourself in the foot.

PS2 had a massive shortage as well, how come people look at PS2 launch as successful?

360 launch, you think MS really couldn't have made more units with all the money to burn in the bank?

More coverage, more fear of not being able to get a unit, the happier the suits are. This is why they launch a month before christmas. To build the hype and carry it through the season. It's how you get a constant cash flow. Shortage is good, but units left on store shelf is very bad.

Take a business math class or something. People being hyped about your product and not being able to act upon that hype is a disaster and basically means that you wasted all your marketing and PR. Plus close to 50% of the year's sales happen during the holidays. Hype doesn't last months and months, it comes and goes.

And I don't think anyone regards the US PS2 launch as "successful". Sony Barely managed to get a million units to the US by the end of the year [and only about 600,000 memory cards ]. PS2 sales didn't pick up again until the price cut.

Microsoft did take action to get more machines out there by opening another couple of manufacturing facilities, but it took months. I don't think you appreciate how long it takes to get a manufacturing plant up and running. It doesn't matter how much money you throw at it, there are only so many hours in a day.

Sony are completely stuck because they rely on Nichia to make the diodes for the BluRay drive and their yields have been awful. They could go to another supplier, but no-one else is as well-equipped as Nichia (they make 80% of the entire world's optical drive diodes). They could set up another manufacturing plant but, again, it'd take months to get up and running and it still doesn't guarantee decent yields. By the time the new plant was up and running, they'd more than likely have solved the yield issue, leaving them with a useless diode manufacturing facility.

You can tell an artificial demand because there are constant restocks at just the right times, but if you don't have product on shelves for weeks at a time, that's not artificial demand -that's a serious, genuine problem.

So I went today at lunch, they had 6 kiosks wrapped around a column, of sorts. 5 of the kiosks were knocked out of commission. I asked two separate reps at two different times why only one kiosk was running.

Unrecoverable crash errors. Fantastic. I'm hoping it's an insufficient venting issue, or something. Nice job, heroes.

The only game that was actually running, then, was NBA 07. I wasn't going to wait in line to play that farce.

So I fiddled with the sixaxis on some of the dead units. It feels like a lighter, flimsier DualShock 2 with pseudo-360-style pull triggers for L2 and R2. The analog sticks feel just as loose and crappy as ever, though obviously I won't know until I try playing an actual game.

I love the black glossy look, but after seeing the PS3 in person, I'm kind of staggered by its size and trying to figure out where the hell I'll put the damn thing such that it'll properly vent...

I had heard that the Toys R Us in Times Square, NYC, had playable PlayStation 3 kiosks, luckily for me and you, that rumor is true. There is a station set up now with four units, but only one is playable. While I was there, the guy hogging all the playtime was trying out Motorstorm. I’m not sure if there are other games on the demo disc, but I’m going to assume there are. Check out more pictures after the jump or click here to watch a video of it in action

You are hoping insufficent venting is the issue?

Look at what they are enclosed in.

None of the PS3 events happening in the US(L.A., NYC) have had those problems.
