INTRO
Welcome to the Multiverse! Multiple worlds exist side by side in different dimensions, known as planes, and they are as different as night and day. All of them, however, have a form of magical energy known as mana, which can be channeled into powerful spells. Residents of these planes are usually unaware of other worlds, but there are some special beings with the ability to safely travel between them, known as Planeswalkers.

Magic: the Gathering is a Trading Card Game, the first of its kind, developed by Richard Garfield and his playtesters for the gaming company Wizards of the Coast in 1993. The game quickly became a hit, and it is currently bigger than it has ever been. In the standard game, you and your opponent play the role of dueling Planeswalkers, using customized 60-card decks made up of your spells, the creatures you can summon, your mana bonds with lands, and even other Planeswalkers you can call in to help out. Whoever can get his or her opponent down from 20 to 0 life, wins.

In stark contrast to the dreary world of Innistrad, we're visiting Kaladesh, a bright and colorful steampunk plane inspired by India. We had previously seen it in Magic Origins, but this is the first time a set will focus solely on it.

As a change from the previous topics, this is starting before the Kaladesh set is officially unveiled at PAX West. In the past, these unveils were a week or so before the start of spoiler weeks, but this time it's immediately before. Before PAX, this post was emptier than you see now.

PAX West will not just unveil Kaladesh, but it will also host to the Magic World Championship, where the top 24 Magic players of the world come together to compete in a variety of formats. This topic was made after Day 1, but feel free to discuss the other days of the event here.

The schedule is here, and all events will be streamed live. An abridged version of the schedule can be found in the next post.

GETTING STARTED
If you're a beginner, feel free to come in--that's why this is in OT, after all. Spoiler season is one of the most exciting times for a Magic player, and it would be great for more to join in. Us regulars can get a bit technical with card evaluations and use a lot of jargon, and many of us will loudly proclaim that a cool-looking card is junk, or say that a lame-looking card is really powerful, but feel free to ask us if you want an explanation.

To see what a game is like, check out Geek and Sundry's Spellslinger series, where Day[9] battles various geek celebrities, often losing, using simple and easy to follow decks.

To get started, check out the official page. Basically:
* It's recommended that new players play Magic Duels (thread). It's a great way to learn the game on your own, and it's free!
* After that point, the act of deck building can be intimidating, so it's recommended that you try out a preconstructed deck and customize it with other cards you get, before you start making your own from scratch.
* Before you start entering any tournaments, or building decks for tournament formats like Standard, it's strongly recommended you stick to playing casually against friends for a while. Not only will you have an easier time with deck building, since you don't have additional constraints, but it will usually be much cheaper.
* For your first deck, starting with Kaladesh, you can buy a Planeswalker Deck, These preconstructed decks come with four new cards unique to the decks, including a new Planeswalker card. If you have a friend to play with, there are also Duel Decks that provide two decks for a game right out of the box, but are a bit more complicated. Third-party company Card Kingdom also releases Battle Decks, at a similar level of complexity to Duel Decks, but at a higher level of power and consistency. Note that those last two aren't built for the Standard format, but are good for casual play.
* To get your physical collection started, buy a Deck Builder's Toolkit, which includes not just a starting collection of cards (including a lot of lands), but also some booster packs and a good box to store cards in. The Holiday Gift Box provides an even larger starting collection and better storage.
* The different play formats can be found here. The most popular formats where you start out with no deck and have to make them from scratch (Limited) are Draft and Sealed. The most popular formats where you bring a 60-card deck ahead of time (Constructed) are Standard, Modern, and Legacy. Casual play has no restrictions other than what your friends decide.
* To learn about the theories behind deckbuilding and gameplay, check out Level One.
* Once your skill advances, another popular way to play Magic casually is Commander. Wizards provides prebuilt decks for this format too.
* While game stores will often hold Magic events at other times, every store that has Magic events will have Friday Night Magic. There, you will be able to find other players in your area to both have matches with and trade with. Find game stores here. And to get started participating in your local game store (LGS) scene, attend a prerelease!

PRERELEASE
Prerelease Primer
Limited Set Review
While the set won't officially be sold until the release date, that isn't the first time you can get your hands on the new cards. Game stores hold prerelease events for every set in the Sealed format, where every player is given a box with six booster packs and a random additional rare card. From this pool of cards, all of which you keep, each player builds a deck of 40 cards and participates in a Swiss-system tournament. This is a fun and casual event, where everyone is still trying to figure out the set, so don't worry about messing up. In addition to normal duels, there are also Two-Headed Giant events, where you pair up with another player and face off against another team.

Prerelease events will be held on September 24–25, 2016. Call your local game store a few days ahead of time to register, or they might just run out of room. Find local game stores here.

CHANGES
Magic now has a rarity even rarer than mythic rare! Sort of. The Masterpiece Series is a "set within the set" made up entirely of reprints or cards printed at a lower rarity in the normal set. These cards won't be in Standard, unless they're also printed in the normal set, but you can play them in Limited. Masterpiece cards are always premium (with foil) and have a special frame treatment and set symbol. There are around 50 cards each block, spread across the two sets, with more in the large set. You can find a Masterpiece card in roughly 1 out of every 144 booster packs, which is slightly more often than opening a premium mythic rare. They'll be available on Magic Online, but not Magic Duels.

This is completely opt-in. You don't have to get any of these cards for tournaments, and they are simply a way to bling up your deck.

Every block from now on will have a Masterpiece Series, after the success of the wallet-sculpting Zendikar Expeditions in Battle for Zendikar. They will be thematically tied into the block they are attached to. For example, Kaladesh's Masterpiece Series, Kaladesh Inventions, will be made up of artifacts that flavorfully seem like they could be made on Kaladesh.

Lore introduction
Guide to Kaladesh
Overall history of Magic

Aether is the raw energy that exists between planes, and while it's present on many worlds, it is available in vast quantities on Kaladesh. The environment itself curves and flows in reaction to streams of the energy, forming delicate twisting patterns in everything. Some time ago, the genius inventor Avaati Vya discovered a way to process this aether into fuel that could run automatons and other mechanical devices, launching an age of innovation and progress.

Kaladesh is ruled by the Consulate, a nominally pure meritocracy, and it provides aether to all to promote invention and artistry. When we arrive there, the plane will be running the extravagant Inventors' Fair, where people from all over come together to pit their creations against each other, both in the judging booth and in the arena. However, during this time of apparent prosperity, there is a faction of renegades who feel that they have been left behind. They disagree with the strict rules and regulations the Consulate places on the people, and know the government isn't as benevolent as it presents itself.

As it so happened, the senior inspector of the fair is a Planeswalker, Dovin Baan. Hearing of the Gatewatch, he came to them to enlist their help to guard the fair from the renegades. His plea was rejected, on the grounds that they don't interfere in internal conflicts, but this got the attention of Chandra. Her parents were killed by the government of Kaladesh for helping the renegades, and Baan angered her enough that she decided to return to the plane after her long absence. Accompanied by Liliana, and followed by Baan and Nissa, Chandra could prove the tipping point for a full blown revolution.

CHARACTERS
Planeswalkers:
Chandra Nalaar - Red - A chaotic human pyromancer Planeswalker who does what she wants, damn the consequences. Given that her parents were killed by them, she has no love for the Kaladesh government.
Dovin Baan - Blue - A member of Kaladesh's government, this cold and calculating vedalken Planeswalker can instantly determine the weaknesses of any machine, and he believes living things are no different.
Saheeli Rai - Blue/Red - A renowned human inventor Planeswalker who can skillfully manipulate metal into the lifelike animal shapes that do her bidding. Though fiercely competitive, she is kind to her friends and fans.
Liliana Vess - Black - A ruthless human necromancer Planeswalker who only looks out for herself. Despite her youthful appearance, she is hundreds of years old; she made a deal with four demons to stop aging. She later discovered a powerful artifact called the Chain Veil, and used it to start killing her demon creditors, but the Veil could be a worse master than even them.
Nissa Revane - Green - A spiritual elf druid Planeswalker. She used to be a racist elf supremacist, but Wizards of the Coast wants you to forget that. Her magic allows her to control plants, summon nature elementals, and channel mana.
Tezzeret - Blue/Black - A human artificer Planeswalker bound into the service of the evil Nicol Bolas, but he is trying to find a way out. Even on his own, he's dangerous and ruthless. He has somehow embedded himself into Kaladesh as Head Judge of the Inventors' Fair.
Ajani Goldmane - White/Green - A leonin (cat person) Planeswalker who lost his friends and is now righting wrongs where he finds them. He is skilled at both healing and physical combat.

Non-Planeswalkers:
Rashimi - Green/Blue - A friend of Saheeli who believes that the mystical Great Conduit guides everything, this elf inventor developed a way to teleport an inorganic object to another location, but this creation could lead to disaster.
Pia Nalaar - Red - Chandra's mother, who is actually still alive. She's a skilled inventor and the leader of the renegade movement on Kaladesh.
Oviya Pashiri - Green - An old woman who plays an important role in the renegades. She is an old friend of the Nalaar family, and is helping Chandra.

On Kaladesh, artifacts are the name of the game, especially making them.

As a change to the wording for making tokens, you now create them instead of putting them on the battlefield under your control. Same functionality, but a lot shorter.

Kaladesh also marks the grand return of dwarves to Magic, mainly in white now, but there is still a bit of red in them.

Upgrade or create
Fabricate
en_eMQxKzsTBs.png
en_pEvS9q08s7.png

When a creature with fabricate enters the battlefield, you have to choose whether you want it to upgrade itself (put the designated number of +1/+1 counters on it), or create something new (create the designated number of Servo creatures). Depending on the state of the game, either option could be worth choosing.

Note that you choose on resolution, not when the ability triggers. If the creature leaves the battlefield before the ability resolves, you automatically choose to make Servos.

After being requested for so long, they're here at last! Vehicles start out as normal artifacts, and they can't do anything on their own, but get a crew, and things start to happen. Tap any number of creatures you control to pilot the vehicle, and if their total power is greater than or equal to the crew cost, then it turns on and becomes a creature you can send into battle. While the vehicle is affected by summoning sickness, it doesn't matter if the creatures you have crew it do or not. And you can use any creature! Human, bear, Eldrazi, or even another vehicle (which is crewed by another vehicle, and so on).

However, there are some creatures that provide an additional benefit to vehicles, which have the Pilot creature type. Incidentally, to get the 6/4 the thread title references, have a Fleetway Cruiser out while you control Depala.

The aether that flows through Kaladesh can be converted to fuel for the various machines there. Originally planned for the Mirrodin block, the much-theorized "E mechanic" has finally appeared! Energy is a completely new resource separate from mana. Cards can give you energy counters, which never go away until you spend them. Cards that provide energy usually give you a way to spend them, but you can spend the energy on any card you want.

Kaladesh Inventions
As explained in the Changes subsection of the Intro section, there's a new "set within the set", made up of reprints and cards already otherwise in the set, generally known as the Masterpiece Series, which will be at a rarity beyond mythic rare. These cards won't be in Standard, unless they're also printed in the normal set. The theme of this block's Masterpiece Series is Kaladesh Inventions, and it will be made up entirely of artifacts that can flavorfully fit on Kaladesh. There will be 30 cards in Kaladesh, and 24 in Aether Revolt.

I'm assuming this doesn't say "Metalcraft" on it because not a lot of cards in the set say "if you have 3+ artifacts, do X" but..........seriously that card should just have Metalcraft on it.

They've been pretty consistent about this: when they have something that's an ability word (and therefore could just be written out) they only use the ability word when it's unifying a whole bunch of cards together in one mechanic. Landfall and threshold each came back on one card in Magic Origins without the name. This mostly just shows there aren't a lot of cards with this mechanic.

Which is a good sign since as a set mechanic metalcraft is...a bit dull

I know and I get the rationale but I hate it. It sucks when I search Landfall in Gatherer and Tireless Tracker won't show up :/

BTW, searching these, I discovered that there are a lot more cards (9, specifically) that have landfall-not-called-landfall than I thought: http://mtg.wtf/card?q=o:"land+enters+the+battlefield+under+your+control"+-o:landfall

Inventor's fair feels like it could fit into Affinity, right?

It's actually a tough include since land spots are super limited. 4 Darksteel, 4 Inkmoth, 4 Blinkmoth, 1 Basic, and 3 Glimmervoids are pretty much always in every deck. This leaves 0-2 spots depending on your build. Personally I have the above plus 1 Sea Gate Wreckage and if I were to add another land it'd be the 4th Glimmervoid.. I'll test it for sure but realistically the only artifacts I'd be tutoring would be Etched Champion or Cranial Plating at that point in the game which may or may not be better than drawing an extra card every turn.

This is what I asked in the last thread. I think a singleton for the tutor ability could be viable.
I feel like there isn't time in the Affinity game plan to spend 4 mana and sac a land to get something. And it's not really a tool box kind of deck where you have one ofs you need to search up. Land spots are so tight in there so you'd probably have to already be fine with running 17.

I don't think so. When does affinity have 5 mana and what card could bail them out of the losing situation they have to be in to get to so much mana.

Inventors' Fair seems like too fair a card for affinity imo.

Affinity's been running a 1 of Seagate Wreckage recently, and I think this is a better card then that all things considered. Getting to tutor for a Cranial/Master of Etherium Beats drawing blind.

Yeah, it's not an auto include but I feel like testing is warranted. The fact that it doesn't come into played tapped is a big boon. Probably more suited to a Tezzerator style deck.

Also, Sea Gate is functionally 4 mana, and this is functionally 5 mana (both require tapping the land). In a deck with 16-17 lands and 8 Artifact mana sources (4 of which are legendary), the difference between 4 and 5 mana is pretty significant.

I have Sea Gate Wreckage in my sideboard (I run 4 Inkmoth/Blinkmoth/Citadel/Glimmervoid and 1 Mountain) for matchups where I side in multiple 3 mana cards

and I think that's already a questionable inclusion and you're getting to tutor for something a whole turn later with Fair and losing it as a mana source in the process. If Fair doesn't win you the game on the spot Sea-Gate seems better to me.

Sea gate also can draw you into Galvanic Blast.

These sets are coming out too fast, feels like EMN had a pro tour and one month later its on to the next set

Almost nothing out of my W/B control standard is rotating, except for languish, which is incredibly important because of Avacyn. I really hope there's a replacement, or humans past turn 5 is gonna be rough for me.

It's all well and good to continue discussions from the previous thread uninterrupted, but you guys should post the card for those just coming in.

E mechanic?

We don't actually know what the E mechanic is. It was planned for the original Mirrodin set, but it was removed because it was taking up too much space and they didn't have time to properly test it. They've been trying to find a place for it for years, and it's going to finally appear in Kaladesh.

Lantern Control loses to burn, they said.

This card is an easy auto-include as at least a 1-of. Slightly shores up the deck's worst matchups(burn and zero-power creatures that attack for 1) at no deckbuilding cost(the main risk of adding the Thopter Foundry combo), while being a lategame tutor for a deck that plays a lot of bullets. The power of the tutor is somewhere between Infernal Tutor and Codex Shredder, which is great for such a low investment.

I've been playing Magic casually with friends & siblings for a while but I think I'm gonna start playing semi-seriously now that I've found a store close by that does events.

So, which sets are rotating out of standard? Origins and BFZ block, I assume?

It doesn't help Lantern's matchup to jund and one life a turn is kinda w/e. It's the tutor effect that's nice for Lantern.

No, the sets leaving are Dragons of Tarkir and Magic Origins. Due to the shift in how sets rotate, there was an odd "block" formed by those two sets.

No returning mechanics in Kaladesh they say, first card unveiled has Metalcraft lololol (I'm glad it's not keyworded, since that means only this one or a few have this ability).

Anyway, that land is really really good for almost every EDH deck and I'm sure it will see plenty of constructed play as well.

Jund isn't as bad as Burn. The fact that the lifegain is free is all the difference, getting above one bolt could be the gamechanger. Much more importantly, the fact that it just locks out Noble Hierarch and Signal Pest as win cons through Ensaring Bridge is the real deal.

Oh, ok thanks. So it'll be BFZ block/SOI block/Kaladesh then?

Anyway, I bought a couple of SOI and EMN packs the other day. Got, among other things, Sigarda and Odric so I'm leaning towards making a GW humans deck. I'll want to see more of Kaladesh first, though.

I know I'm casual as hell, but I can think of some EDH decklists would that pretty much auto-include Inventor's Fair.

Well, I know it's not exactly about Kaladesh but tonight I'm going to my first FNM ever (doing a booster draft). I've already drafted with friends before but I'm quite excited to do it on a FNM.

Suggestions? Things to bring with me?

Bring sleeves, pen and paper. A die or two would be wise as well.

This thread is about mtg in general, Kaladesh is just what's going on at the moment, so don't be afraid to ask anything here.

Gaining you one life after turn 2 isn't helping against suicide zoo, infect, dredge, etc. like they might run it because it's almost free to run but it's not making much better for the deck.

Are people still playing Magic Duels on here?

I found some old cards from Magic the Gathering I had more than a decade ago, and thought I might give Magic Duels a go, as I am loving card games.

I still play it pretty regularly. It's a good way to scratch that Magic itch that doesn't cost much (or any) money. Also the F2P model is super reasonable because there's a fixed number of boosters to buy for each set to get the full card pool.

How are you getting all the cards though without paying ? The grind is super real and in order to get even close to enough for a booster pack its either 10 versus match wins or 20 matches against the computer. The daily quests are super easy but there arent enough of them.

I loved the way the old magic games did it

I still play Magic Duels for the daily quests, although I'm getting quite bored with it. It's a good way to play Magic for free, but it's also riddled with a bunch of minor issues that hurts the experience.

I've unlocked all the cards by playing it regularly.
