It looks like all the talk coming from the Resistance devs about how huge the game is was...........based on artificial padding. After being able to dump PS3 games with linux, this was discovered on resistance.

To push data to the outer rims I suppose. Transfer rates are higher out there.

Disc based games are never optimized for size anyways with a few exceptions like oblivion where new DLC is a couple hundred kilobytes each.

It means they added empty files to fill up space (by empty i mean files that just have spaces in them or grabage data). Devs do this to push the game on the outer edges of the discs because it reduces load times (outer edges read more date on one disc spin that the inner edge).

But can you pick and choose what data goes where?

Of course, they're stored alphabetically so you just pad the discs with stuff like AAAAAA.AAA

It depends on the tool that packs it I suppose. You can probably list files and or directories in order and it will arrange the data like that. So yes you can.

Assuming those filesizes are bytes, that's only 60 * ~7 megs of padding or around 420 megs of padding. Given that a BR disc can store 25 gigs, this is the equivalent of having a ten megabyte garbage file on a cd.

Really nothing to get worked up about. Resistance is a massive game.

Probably used to manipulate how a disc is read and to reduce loadtimes, rockstar did it with GTA3 and other developers did it with their streaming intensive games.

Oops, sorry. Well, padding is just artificially increasing the size of the game. No reason for it whatsoever, but to justify BD was the only format Resistance could work on. Also, like I said this is just in the US directory. Resistance includes directories for every language ;)

This is a red herring. I'm sure they could get a game up to 17 GBs just through lack of compression and lack of deleting redundant files in the development build, without having to resort to deliberate padding.

I'm also sure they could have put Resistance on a DVD9 if they really wanted to.

The singleplayer seems to take people over 12 hours on an average. Then you factor in the expansive online multiplayer, fmw recorded scenes, the various languages..etc. I'm pretty sure the material needed takes 16GB as proclaimed.

According to everyone else, the PS3 should load data the same no matter WHERE it is on the disc. So the excuse that it pushes data to the edges is retarded. If you get constant speed, there's absolutely no need to push data.

okay... then why is there padded data?

it's cute how you're trying so hard to spin this in a negative way to bash sony. i also doubt there are gigabytes of padding like you claim they are doing.

It all depends on how many regions are on the game disc.

each region has 420MB of padding

Really nothing to get worked up about. Resistance is a massive game.

Thread am failure.

Considering that all the PS3 launch games didn't fill even 1 dvd disc (Except for Resistance of course), looks like Sony filled Resistance filled with all the languages into the game and put in these "paddings" to make the game fill 17 gigs which is to show that Blue-Ray disc are needed.

As for the question if more storage space is needed for these next-gen games, Blue Dragon is going to fill 3 DvDs the only reason for this is that the game is full of CG animations on top of the epic RPG game itself.

Can't you read? It has been stated many times in this thread that devs pad data to get the vital parts of the game to the outer parts of the disc to be able to load it faster.

It has been done on both CD and DVDs too, so it's not new.

there has to be a reason for the padding and only the developers will know. all we can do is guess. why would they put padding just to claim the game was so huge? like anyone really cares.
