Yoshinori Kitase talks Final Fantasy VII Remake progress, battle system and more

Final Fantasy VII Remake producer Yoshinori Kitase had a few words on the game in the latest issue of Famitsu, giving fans an update on progress and how things like the battle system are shaping up.

“We’re currently brushing up the scene from the announcement trailer,” Kitase says. “We can now see the line of quality that we’re aiming for more clearly, but there’s still a ways to go.” The team’s goal is to carry this effort through the project’s multiple episode releases.

So how will they fill the gap while waiting for each episode? Kitase says they don’t have any plans to do another Final Fantasy VII Compilation-type project for now. Because they can’t release each volume in just a few months of each other, however, he says they’d like to think of a way to supplement the gaps to hold interest.

As for downloadable content, Kitase notes he’d like to useFinal Fantasy XV as a reference. “A live stream or a program to keep in touch with the users is something I’d like to do, butFinal Fantasy VII Remake will be episodic, and if we want to have it go all the way to the end of the original version, then I believe we’ll need to devote everything we got for it, so I have no idea what will happen for things such as filler development [between episodes] and other works.”

Currently the base of the battle system has been solidified. Kitase confirms both Tetsuya Nomura and Mitsunori Takahashi, who worked on the Kingdom Hearts series andDissidia Final Fantasy series, are putting their best into it. Although he can’t say much at the moment, he also stresses they won’t be removing any parts of the original FFVII that were well received, such as the Materia system.

In closing, Kitase hopes to show progress made on Final Fantasy VII Remake sometime this year. He thinks it would be nice if they could have it playable or a trailer for it at an event. Famitsu also asked him about a possible Final Fantasy VI Remake, to which he replied: “Right now, we’re working onFinal Fantasy VII… The staff within the company are also saying [they’d like to remake it] but it’s on reserve.”

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Basically, nothing except for "hey, materia is still going to be in it".

Yeah, 2020.

Oh well.

The words "multiple episodic release" hurts me. Especially when thinking about how long it will take for everything to come out.

I'm going to assume we'll see nothing at e3, extended gameplay trailer at PSX with a vague 2018 release date then delay into 2019.

I'm not even sure I buy 2020 any more. For Part 1.
And FFXVI? Yeah, good luck seeing that any time prior to PS5.

This is so far off it's not even funny, and this is just the first episode we're talking about here. God knows when the final episode is out. Cyborgs and hoverboards will be a thing no doubt.

This is going to be awful.

I mean the game will probably be solid but the episodic release is going to result in an inconsistent mess as engine improvements and gameplay tweaks are implimented.

I'm getting vibes of Rebuild of Evangelion.

You're getting Square Enix vibes, since this is just what they do. No outside reference is even necessary.

Edit: Wait, I take it you mean the episodic format and the fact Rebuild isn't done and probably never will be? Shit.

Good God Square Japan routinely announced their games too fucking early!!!

Back in 2013 they announced KH3, it's 2017 and we still have no release year in sight! There's a very real possibility that Naughty Dog will deliver two critically and commercially successful triple A titles (Uncharted4, TLoU2) and one side story (Uncharted Chloe Edition) in the time it took Square to pump out KH3.

or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Realize This Assgrab is Delicious
I dunno. This company. You can wait for years and years beyond what is reasonable, and still get something that's rough around the edges....

I don't know about you guys, but this is getting ridiculous for me. Almost 2 years since the announcement and we still don't have any basic info about the game or it's release window, and I don't even want to think about Part 2 or 3 of this game lol.

Wouldn't be surprised if it's finished on PS6, and I am not even joking.

Too bad that this might actually be true.

Hoo boy. In for a long haul with this one. Square-Enix has done such a solid job of killing my excitement year after year that they can no longer hurt me.

Hit me with all the years you got SE.

Square Enix is going to Hitman this. Break it into three huge volumes, but release each volume over the period of a year in five or six episodes

I don't understand how Square stays in business. This game is going to take for fucking ever with stupid long waits between episodes. I hope it's worth it but I worry.

Once again

Don't get hyped for things that don't have solid release dates within a year from now (Whenever now is)

Some companies have a motive to show you stuff early so you buy in as soon as possible. There's no reason to; just wait until the stuff is real.
