The PlayStation 2 US preview megathread: Hell No We Won't Upgrade (56k no)
#1
OK, development might have shifted towards the PS3/360/Wii, but there are still plenty of upcoming games for what NPD data assure us is still the CURRENT generation of consoles ;). Well, at least for the PS2, anyway! I've put together quick capsule previews & links for the remaining PS2 releases, for everyone who (like me) has yet to upgrade or who just wants to get a little more life out of their PS2.
This is a North America-centered thread, so I'm listing games that have yet to be released in the US, or that have yet to be released in Japan where a US release is uncertain. My sincere apologies to the folks in Europe but I honestly don't even know what will be released/will not be released/has not been released over there :(. Also, I've intentionally excluded licensed shovelware, of which there is plenty. Sorry to disappoint you, Cartoon Network Racing fans. But there are probably other things I left out too, so start posting all the omissions and errors that you catch. Games are organized by genre and then alphabetically. (This is post #1 of several, the others will follow in a few minutes.) -----[ACTION]----- DAWN OF MANA ![]() Developer: Square Publisher: Square Enix Release Date: TBA 2007 (U.S.) / Already released (Japan) Though the Mana / Seiken Densetsu series has traditionally been an action RPG series, the latest installment (Seiken Densetsu 4 in Japan) is more of a straight-up hack-'n-slash. While you earn experience and items, they're all discarded among completion of a level, which has resulted in some pretty harsh impressions from importers. Highlights include more sophisticated physics and environmental deformation courtesy the Havok engine; using these environmental effects to dispatch enemies earns you power-ups you wouldn't otherwise obtain. Previews: Game|Life | IGN | 1Up Trailer: here (click "Trailer" on the menu on the left) Official Site: Japanese GAF Thread: here KIKI KAI KAI [POCKY & ROCKY] 2 ![]() Developer: Starfish Publisher: Taito Release Date: March (Japan), no U.S. release announced Sequel to the SNES Ikari Warriors-style miko-and-tanuki shooter classic, released in the U.S. as Pocky and Rocky. The sequel is still a top-down 2-D shooter with a co-op mode (and high-res sprites!), meaning that all is right with the world. Both analog sticks are used to control the game. The new sidekick ("Konkon," a goblin) looks a little different / weird, but what the hell. Some please localize this! Official Site: here GAF Thread: here METAL SLUG ANTHOLOGY ![]() Developer: SNK Playmore / Terminal Reality Publisher: SNK Playmore Release Date: Feb. 6 (U.S.) / February (Europe) / March (Japan) This is the awesome collection of Metal Slug 1-6 and X that's already been released for the Wii. It's coming to the PS2 (and the PSP) in February. THE RED STAR ![]() Developer: Acclaim Publisher: XS Games Release Date: Feb. 6 This now-legendary comic book adaption carries on the tradition of two beloved oldschool genres, shmups and beat-'em-ups. Critically acclaimed, The Red Star has been completed since 2004 but has been in limbo after publisher Acclaim went out of business. The latest word is that XS Games has picked up the game and it will finally be coming out in February--and as a budget-line release, no less. I have to admit that my reaction is "I'll believe it when I see it," but let's keep our fingers that we finally get this. Previews: 1Up | GameSpot | IGN Trailer: here SAMURAI WARRIORS 2: EMPIRES ![]() Developer: Omega Force Publisher: Koei Release Date: Feb. 27 (U.S.), already released (Japan) Updated version of last year's beat-'em-up in feudal Japan. (For the uninitiated, Samurai Warriors is the Japan-focused counterpart to the Dynasty Warriors franchise, which is set in China.) As with the Dynasty Warriors: Empires releases, the Empires version of the Samurai Warriors 2 adds a strategy / war sim component between the action levels, and bolsters the roster with a couple new characters. Also being released on the 360. Official Site: here Last edited by Greenpanda : 01-16-2007 at 04:13 PM. |

-----[ADVENTURE]-----
GOD OF WAR II ![]() Developer: SCE Santa Monica Publisher: SCEA Release Date: Mar. 13 (US), Mar. 30 (Europe) Definitely the biggest remaining PS2 title, God of War II is coming out in a few months and looks pretty darn great. Picking up shortly after the conclusion of the first game, Kratos is God of War only for a short time before he is stripped of his powers and has to get them back. New challenges along the way include snow areas, battles with a giant colossus (which comprises the entire first level) and the Barbarian King, and mid-air combat atop the Pegasus. Rather than force the player to re-earn many of the same types of upgrades, GoW II starts you off with a number of the abilities from the first game and then provides new ones to earn, including a spell that set electrical traps, the ability to summon undead underlings with the Barbarian King's Hammer, and the protective Golden Fleece. And instead of shipping with a separate Limited Edition with bonus materials, all versions of the game will include an extra DVD with the "Making Of" content and so forth. Thanks, guys! Previews: IGN | GameSpot | 1Up Trailers: here Official Site: here GAF Thread: here RAW DANGER ![]() Developer: Irem Publisher: Agetec Release Date: Feb. 27 (U.S.), already released (Japan) Remember Disaster Report? No? Well, it was an ICO-ish early PS2 game where you had to navigate a man and woman out of an earthquake-damaged city. Raw Danger is the sequel, based around a flood instead of an earthquake. In addition to ICO-style navigation of the actual flood-based hazards, character interaction is a big part of the game and you have to negotiate with others to obtain the supplies and information you need. There are six different playable characters and your actions in one character's scenario can affect the other characters'. Finally, you also have to figure out how to stay warm and dry in order to stay alive. Previews: IGN 1Up | GameSpot Trailers: here Official Site: here (Japanese) TOMB RAIDER: ANNIVERSARY ![]() Developer: Crystal Dynamics Publisher: Eidos Release Date: Spring 2007 This is the original 1996 Tomb Raider, remade for its 10th anniversary (more or less :P) using the graphics engine from last year's Tomb Raider: Legend. It's not just a graphic overhaul; although it's still based on the original game, the level design is being revamped, tank controls are being dropped (in favor of the direct controls from the TR: Legend engine), and the gameplay is being updated with some of the features added for TR: Legend, such as a grappling hook and more combat options. Think of it as the Twin Snakes of the Tomb Raider franchise. (It's also coming to the PSP and PC, for what it's worth.) Previews: GameSpot | IGN | 1Up Trailer: here Official Site: here GAF Thread: here YAKUZA 2 ![]() Developer: Sega Publisher: Sega Release Date: Already released (Japan), no U.S. release announcced It was a short sequel turn-around time on Sega's critically acclaimed (also badass) Shenmue-meets-the-mafia adventure / drama, but the sequel doesn't look any less developed because of it. This time the setting includes both Osaka and Tokyo, meaning the story & game world are even bigger and longer. Combat sequences have been enhanced with additional moves (you can change your direction of attack mid-combo), the difficulty level upped, loading times decreased, and there are now occasional QTE events during battle to execute special moves (or dodge your opponent's). The story is set a year after the first game's, with many characters returning, including protagonist Kazuma Kiryu. Sadly, Yakuza TANKED at retail in the US, which makes the localization future of the sequel somewhat questioanble -- hopefully someone picks it up, even if Sega doesn't. -----[RPG]-----
AR TONELICO: MELODY OF ELEMIA ![]() Developer: Gust Publisher: NIS America Release Date: Feb. 6 (U.S.), already released (Japan) Latest anime-style RPG from Gust, developer of the Atelier series, but with a more epic scope than the Atelier games. During combat, only the front line characters fights directly, while the other characters provide support (both offensive and defensive) with magical songs; keep singing the same song, and it gets more powerful, but saps the character's power more quickly. You can chat with the support characters out of battle to improve your relationship with them (cover dating sim ahoy!) and make them more powerful. Ar Tonelico also features more of the item/weapon creation features from the Atelier games. Pre-order it from NIS's site and you'll get the OST and artbook! Previews: IGN |GameSpot | 1Up Trailer: here (click "Downloads" for trailer) Official Site: here DRAGON SHADOW SPELL ![]() Developer: Flight-plan Publisher: Flight-plan Release Date: Jan. 18 (Japan), no U.S. release announced One of a bazillion (OK, three) strategy RPGs coming out this winter in Japan. This one is from Flightplan, developer of the Black Matrix and Summon Night franchises. (Actually, it looks like DSS contains a number of allusions to the Black Matrices.) To be honest, I had a hard time finding much other info, save that some of the enemy monsters are extra-large (taking up, say, a 2 x 2 grid of tiles), it's got anime cutscenes, and that Famitsu gave it a pretty good score. (PRETTY TITLE SCREEN CONFIRMED.) It also looks you can actually walk around the town areas between battles instead of just having a point-and-click map or such. Atlus has localized some of the Summon Night spinoffs, so there's a chance that this could come out in the U.S., but nothing official yet. Trailer: here Official Site: here (Japanese) GRIM GRIMOIRE ![]() Developer: Vanillaware Publisher: Nippon Ichi Developed by Vanillaware (not NIS themselves), Grim Grimoire is a side-scrolling RPG in the vein of the Princess Crown series, which the Vanillaware team created before leaving Atlus. It's a "magician simulation game" in which you play a young witch and can cast a variety of different spells. There are four types of magic (necromancy, sorcery, alchemy, and "glamour"), with each type being strong against one other type and weak against other. It looks like there'll be some pretty huge battles, with a large number of summoned allies on the screen at once and each one capable of receiving its own commands. Aaand that's about all I could find, except to say that the high-res 2-D art is awesome. Nippon Ichi is heavily promoting the game's Lujei Piche character, who also appears in Soul Cradle (see below). Looking forward to this one. Official Site: here (Japanese) GAF Thread: here KINGDOM HEARTS 2 FINAL MIX+ Developer: Square Publisher: Square Enix Release Date: Fall (U.S.) / March 29 (Japan) Square has a long history of creating upgraded editions of its big-name games for Japan, but up to this point, none of these upgrades have been released in the US. EGM is reporting that KH2 Final Mix+, however, will break this trend and come to the US in the fall. The "Final Mix" version of KH2 will include a couple of new cutscenes and boss battles to button-mash your way through. But the big draw will be the "+" part, which is actually a full 3-D remake of the GBA card battle title Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. re:Chain of Memories, as it's called, will retain the card-based gameplay of the GBA original, but will now feature completely redone graphics and fully voiced and acted cutscenes. As Chain of Memories actually set up a lot of the KH2 plot points, it's not too surprising that Square would try to release it to a wider audience. Now where's my FF X-2 Last Mission? Previews: 1Up | GameSpot GAF Thread: here ODIN SPHERE Developer: Unknown Publisher: Atlus Release Date: TBA 2007 Atlus USA listed "Odin Sphere" as a 2007 title at E3, but, seven months later, has still yet to divulge any details on what it is except that it's an action RPG. GAF posters "in the know," however, insist that this is a brand new game that we haven't seen yet, and not merely a localized version of some other game with a new name. Guess we'll just have to keep waiting for the big unveiling. PERSONA 3 ![]() Developer: Atlus R&D1 Publisher: Atlus Release Date: June 2007 (U.S.) / Already released (Japan) The latest totally awesome Megaten game and potential 2007 GOTY, Persona 3 takes its inspiration from both dungeon crawlers and "life simulation" games. The game progresses over the course of a year, with time management a key part of the premise. During the night, you explore dungeons in an action RPG format with 3 party members. During the day, you're a high school student and have to assign your time to a daily schedule of studying, clubs, and activities. Investing your time into different activities builds your battle statistics in different ways and allows you access to different categories of Personas (for spells and such). Bbut there's not enough time to do everything, so just like in real life, you've got to figure out how to allocate your time. Highly acclaimed by GAF posters upon its Japanese release in 2006, the game is coming to the U.S. in 2007 with head-shots uncensored. More recent controversy, however, surrounds the "Fes" expansion disc soon to be released in Japan, with adds a harder difficulty level and substantial post-game plot and story -- Atlus isn't saying for sure, but it looks like this extra stuff won't be included with the U.S. version. Previews: GameSpot | IGN (but the GAF thread is much more informative ... as usual :P) Trailer: here Official Site: here GAF Thread: here ROGUE: HEARTS DUNGEON ![]() Developer: Plophet Publisher: Compile-Heart Release Date: April (Japan), no U.S. release announced Totally unrelated to Rogue Galaxy (see below), this is a random dungeon RPG named after (but not identical) to the computer classic that lends its name to the genre, though obviously sans the ASCII graphics. Developer Plophet [sic] has a track record including big-name hits like The Maze and The Dungeon RPG, so, uh ... yeah :P. Official Site: here (Japanese) GAF Thread: here ROGUE GALAXY ![]() Developer: Level 5 Publisher: SCEA Release Date: Jan. 30 (U.S.) / Sep. 30 (Europe) / Already released (Japan) Cel-shaded action RPG by Level 5, whose prior works include Dark Cloud, White Knight Story, and the DQ VIII graphics engine. As with most multi-character action RPGs, you control one party member during combat scenes while the others function according to AI settings -- but certain moves (e.g. healing) are presented to the player for approval beforehand, so you have more control over their actions. The setting uses a "space pirate" premise that has been frequently compared to Skies of Arcadia, with the characters cruising between planets on an interstellar pirate ship. Import impressions were rather negative and frequently criticized the dungeon designs, but Level 5 has spent substantial time revising the game since its Japanese release (as evidenced from the delay of over a year), adding an extra planet to explore and tweaking the battle mechanics. Previews: GameSpot | IGN | 1Up Trailer: here Official Site: here GAF Thread: here SHINING FORCE EXA ![]() Developer: Sega Publisher: Sega Release Date: March 27 (U.S.), already released (Japan) Sadly, the latest Shining Force is another action RPG in the vein of 2005's Shining Force NEO, not a strategy RPG. WHY SEGA??? Um, I guess people who have been playing these games say they're actually decent hack-'n'-slashers. And in something of a nod to its strategy RPG origins, you now have a "home base" where you can manage your characters and venture out on new missions from. This hot (?) stuff is coming your way in March. [b]Previews: IGN | GameSpot Trailer: here Official Site: here (Japanese) GAF Thread: here SOUL CRADLE ![]() Developer: Nippon Ichi Publisher: NIS America Release Date: TBA 2007 (U.S.), Feb 25 (Japan) The latest strategy RPG effort from Nippon Ichi (Disgaea, Phantom Brave, La Pucelle). Soul Cradle is supposed to mark something of a departure from their other games. I'm having a hard time finding details since it seems to have been ignored by Western media, but it looks like you might move characters in formations instead of individually and that they battle in Valkyrie Profile-style side scrolling combat scenes. Also, you can combine characters to form a single new fighter. Soul Cradle is linked to Grim Grimoire; both games apparently share a common world and feature the Lujei Piche character. Previews: IGN | RPGFan Trailer: here Official Site: here (Japanese) GAF Thread: here SUPER ROBOT WARS ORIGINAL GENERATIONS Developer: Banpresto Publisher: Banpresto Release Date: TBA 2007 (Japan), no U.S. release announced If you like your strategy RPGs with mecha, you're certainly familiar with the long-running Super Robot Wars series, which has now reached the 15 year milestone. Original Generations is a PS2 remake of the two GBA games Super Robot Wars Original Generation 1 and SRW OG 2, which ditched the licensed mecha and characters in favor of original characters (hence the title). New mecha will be added to the PS2 ports. Atlus did bring over the GBA version of the two Original Generations games, but since they were just released, a localization of their PS2 port seems fairly unlikely. Trailer: here WILD ARMS 5 ![]() Developer: Media.Vision Publisher: ?? Release Date: Summer (U.S.), already released (Japan) Wild Arms 4 did some pretty unusual stuff with its "platformer RPG" approach -- the dungeons were basically platformer levels, but with the random, turn-based battles of a traditional RPG. WA5 has more or less the same set-up. It retains the hex-based battle system of Wild Arms 4 but adds a more explorable world map and golems to summon. EGM reported that this is coming to the US, though without word on the publisher; it might be XSEED, which localized Wild Arms 4. Previews: IGN | GameSpot (GAF thread has more/better info.) -----[SHMUP]-----
RAIDEN III ![]() Developer: Moss / Seibu Kaihatsu Publisher: UFO Interactive Release Date: TBA 2007 (US), already released (Japan) Home port of the most recent installment of Taito's vertical-scrolling shmup arcade franchise. Scoring is handled through a bonus multiplier that counts down the longer they stay on the screen (i.e., dispatch enemies soon after they appear on the screen and you'll earn more points) and the Double Play mode lets you control two ships at once (one with the left analog stick and one with the right). As with The Red Star, its U.S. release has been in limbo for a long time, but it appears to have been finally picked up by UFO Interactive for release later this year. Trailer: here GAF Thread: here -----[MUSIC/RHYTHM]----- GUITAR HERO: 1980S EDITION Developer: TBA (Harmonix or Neversoft) Publisher: Activision Release Date: Spring EGM is reporting that Activision is preparing a "1980s Edition" of Guitar Hero for release in a few months. I think the title tells you everything you need to know about this game, actually. GAF Thread: here LUMINES PLUS Developer: Q Entertainment Publisher: Buena Vista Interactive Release Date: Feb. 27 (US), Mar. 9 (Europe) For puzzle fans without a PSP (or Xbox Live), Tetsuya Mizuguchi's Q Entertainment is bringing its puzzle/music combo Lumines home to the PS2. This is more or less a direct port of Lumines 1, except with a couple of songs/skins added from Lumines 2. Fortunately, these additional songs are some of the original tunes from Lumines 2, not the cruddy licensed songs :P. Plus, this will only be $30. Previews: 1Up | IGN Official Site: here -----[SIMULATION]----- CHULIP ![]() Developer: Punchline Publisher: Natsume Release Date: Feb. 14 (US), already released (Japan) Animal Crossing on drugs. You start off as a luckless loser who's new to town, but instead of paying off your debt to Tom Nook, you cure people's depression by sneaking up on them and making out with them... until your reputation improves enough that you're able to kiss the girl of your dreams beneath a tree. As you can probably tell from that description, this game is TOTALLY AWESOME. As in AC, the town and its people runs on their own schedule, though Chulip's has both an above-ground town and a shady underworld town where the truly depressed reside (aka "MySpace"). Directed by Yoshirou Kimura, also responsible for the cult classic Dadaist RPG "Moon" on the PSone. Released in Japan back in 2002 (lol), the U.S. release of Chulip has been postponed for years and frequently rumored to be cancelled, but is apparently FINALLY coming out in February as a budget-priced EB / Gamestop exclusive. Well, it's better than nothing! Wacky Jappy fans rejoice. Previews: 1Up | RPGFan Trailer: here (click "Trailer" at the top of the page) Official Site: here GAF Thread: here ROMANCE OF THE THREE KINGDOMS XI ![]() Developer: Koei Publisher: Koei Release Date: Feb. 6 (US), already released (Japan) Koei's venerable (to say the least) Chinese historical strategy series continues with what is presumably its final PS2 iteration. This is one of the "ruler" installments in the series, so you'll be commanding a nation from the beginning rather than working your way up the ranks. RotK XI also features a significant graphical upgrade, with the map, duels, and debates, all now rendered in 3-D. Finally, there will be a revamped tutorial mode to ease n00bs into the series. Trailer: here Official Site: here GAF Thread: here SEAMAN 2 ![]() Developer: Vivarium Publisher: Sega Release Date: March 29 (Japan), no U.S. release announced Sequel to Sega's creepy Dreamcast virtual pet title. Seaman 2 does away with the "sea" part of thing; instead of raising an intelligent fish, you're raising a caveman on a jungle island. You can interact with the caveman by means of a god-like hand and by speaking to him through the voice recognition features (as in Seaman 1). If the first game is any indication, your cavedude may evolve as the game progresses. Coming out in Japan this March, but the U.S. release is still TBD :\ Previews: 1Up | GameSpot | IGN Trailer: here Official Site: here GAF Thread: here -----[FPS]----- MEDAL OF HONOR: VANGUARD ![]() Developer: EA Los Angeles Publisher: Electronic Arts Release Date: Mar. 6 Umpteeth installment in EA's WW II FPS series. I couldn't find much more specific info on it, except that you're a paratrooper and I'm guessing you probably shoot Nazis 'n stuff. It's also being on the Wii with waggle features. Official Site: here GAF Thread: here -----[RACING]----- BURNOUT: DOMINATOR ![]() Developer: EA UK Publisher: Electronic Arts Release Date: Mar. 26 (US), TBA 2007 (Europe) For the PS2 and PSP only, this is a separate game from the next-gen Burnout 5. Developed by a team separate from the main Criterion group working on Burnout 5, Dominator marks the return of the "Burnout" boosts from Burnout 2 and shorter, more skill-based races. I actually thought there were more PS2 games worth picking up. God of War 2 is a definite, and I loved Dark Cloud 2 so I'll pick up Rogue Galaxy as well. There are rumors of TR: Anniversary being ported to the 360, though. Guitar Hero 80s is a also must-have if the songs aren't downloadable on the 360.

On a more personal note, I hate Naruto and lose respect for people that are fans (I can't help it the respect just disappears when someone says they like him).
