Nintendo Dream interviews Eiji Aonuma #1

http://www.nindori.com/interview/154zelda/index.html

It's all in Japanese since it's coming from Nintendo Dream, but I'm still posting it since it seems that they ask him about Phantom Hourglass a bit at the end here:

http://www.nindori.com/interview/154...154int_05.html

On Phantom Hourglass:
Quote:
Q. By the way, how is the DS version going?

A. The DS version is coming along really nicely. It's a small team of less than ten people, and while the rest of us were frantically scrambling to finish Twilight Princess, they have been quietly progressing with the DS game. I just played it yesterday, and it's really good. It reflects the image of a team that was quietly burning with passion. Playing it by touch really pulls you in. By the way, the team that created the cut scenes for the Wii version was recently sent to work with them, and they're creating some interesting event scenes that aren't like Windwaker, but aren't like the Wii version either. Controlling the boat with the stylus and writing notes on the maps is a really surprising experience, like, "I can't believe we're living in a world where this sort of thing is possible!" There are lots of things [in the DS game] that I wish I could have done in earlier Zelda games. So after Twilight Princess, I hope you will enjoy the DS game!

Q. Any idea when it will be released?

A. (Leaning back) Well! (Laughs) I can't formally announce anything, but I think it would be great if we could get it out early in 2007.
The Phantom Hourglass part was translated thanks to Takuhi, but there doesn't seem to be anything new revealed in this interview. :( Hopefully we'll hear something at GDS.

? By the way, what feeling is 'Zelda' of the DS version?
Blue marsh DS version has finished terrible and pleasantly, too. It is a tiny team of ten people or less that develops the DS version. Version..Zelda..carry..encounter..commotion..make..next..quietness.It kept making crab Care. 'Princess Twilight' is completed, too and "How does the DS version become it?" is good, and : by this though played by feeling the other day. When it is reflected very much, and it plays by touch, at the time of think that the group that burns quietly makes it it is kneaded terribly. In addition, the team that makes the demonstration Movie of the Wii version is ..'Baton of the style'.. different though it joined the DS team recently, it differs from Wii, and it becomes a very mysterious demonstration. In addition, "Became a world where these kind of things were able to be done" is feeling because the boat was able to be operated with the touch pen, and to leave a note behind by it for which it surprised it even if it made it. If these kind of things can be done by current 'Zelda', a lot of parts that I am glad are condensed and it is blocked. Therefore, 'Princess Twilight' is not thought that I must would like you to enjoy the DS version now.

i think thats better than ani's trans.

Isn't it weird how Aonuma doesn't seem to actually know the name of "the DS version?" Is this interview really old? Or did he just not get the e-mail from marketing?

He may not be directing the game, but he's still in charge of it and I'm sure he's well aware of how its development is progressing.

I'm playing Twilight Princess now, and while I'm enjoying it pretty much, I'd love Zelda games to go back to the roots and reinvent themselves. I want a Zelda where every damn screen is an adventure by itself, like the first Zelda was, like every other Zelda eversince has slowly stop being :-/

the next zelda is supposed to be something totally different

TP is supposed to be the last of its kind, which is kind of fitting. Oot, WW and TP could be seen as a trilogy of sorts in retrospect

I really hope it's for real. I mean, the whole essence of the first one is almost lost in the latest entries. All this linearity disguised with fetch quests... I want a true follow up to the first Zelda. Forget of impeding barriers that need of a special item to get past, forget of stupid linearity. Just throw us in a world without any clue, we will learn what to do! Dare to challenge us and you'll see!

Now, don't take me wrong, Twilight Princess is one of the finest games I've ever played, it's astonishing in many ways. I just fail to feel the freedom and the inner desire to explore. Such a beautiful and big world... yet so empty.

You speak the Truth. I couldn't agree with you more.

Zelda was all about action and non-linearity. The 3d Zeldas are all about puzzles and linearity with 'icons' (iconic music, iconic master of the sword, iconic characters, etc. etc. etc.). I fall asleep with every 3d Zelda I've played.

What gets me is that it took very, very few people to make games like The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Brothers 3. Yet, it takes MANY people, large budgets, and more time to make games like Mario 64, Twilight Princess, and so on. Any game company can make significant profit from oldschool type games. I wish publishers would stop treating 2d as something reserved only for handhelds. I would love a new 2d Mario, Zelda, and Metroid not for handheld.

RE: Linear Zelda's you have to give the game designers some credit given that Ocarina of Time was the first of its kind and it built on the previous Zelda games wonderfully, but being 3-D for the first time meant perhaps babying the players a bit more. And Ocarina wasn't the first game to guide players through the first chapter.

Since with Twilight Princess they've seemingly perfected the Ocarina formula, perhaps the next 3-D Zelda will be more open to exploration, after an introductory chapter.

See, I wouldn't say he was refering to the how open-ended the game was. I thought the comment was straight off the back of the Wii-mote, and direct control and raw gameplay mechanics.

However...

- There's been 4 home console Zelda titles that are fairly similar.
- The desire to make it "the last Zelda of its kind" much mean it's different enough, as TP has Wii controls, so there much be a whole new focus and direction for it to be considered different enough to hold true to the Miyamoto statement.
- Lots of people's critisisms of TP involved them saying it's getting old, needs a change, too linear, etc...

-----
I think their problem was, based on what they were saying in the Iwata Asks interviewing sessions, was that they wittingly or not, wanted to make it more of the same. They were saying "What makes Zelda, Zelda" and stuff... This time, they should challenge each and everything they value when it comes to Zelda game design, question the value of the design element or philosophy, and then we'll get a new-generation Zelda title worthy of living up to its platform's creative process.

I hope they add more resources and they polish a bit the look of the game, meanwhile adding a great story that follows Wink Waker MFng' ending. Can't wait to play the game. Touch screen for the win.

Sometimes things get better done with a small team than a big one. It's just more easy to work and concentrate.

10 people is not so bad, since they allready have the engine etc running - and a lot of the objects are allready designed for other zelda games.

Also, brain training was made by 9 people and took about 3 months.
