Crush, new Sega/Kuju game for PSP (SO AWESOME) #1

A new original concep by Kuju, published by Sega.

A man that through hypnosis travels inside of his mind, and have the power of "crushing" the 3D scenarios and make 2D platforms oO

Interesting... more details to follow.

update
press release:

Quote:
SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON (January 23, 2007) – SEGA® of America, Inc. and SEGA® Europe, Ltd. today announced that Crush™, an inventive new puzzle game for the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system, is currently in development and scheduled for release in Summer 2007. Developed by U.K. based Kuju Brighton, Crush is an exciting new concept which challenges how players traditionally approach games with its intriguing new style of thought-provoking gameplay.

Unique to its genre, Crush introduces a valuable new gaming experience that is wholly suited to the PSP system. Set within a complex, hypnotic 3D world, players will use the game's unique crush mechanic to "crush" the environment and transform it into a more simplified 2D platformer. Once flattened, players will utilize the 2D space to move to new areas to solve otherwise impossible challenges, and unlock secret items that were previously unobtainable in the 3D environment. Players will then "uncrush" the 2D environment and return to the 3D world.

"Crush introduces a fascinating new gameplay perspective on the PSP that encourages players to stretch their imagination in a whole new way," said Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President of Marketing, SEGA® of America, Inc. "The spatial concept of the crushing mechanic is something truly unique that encourages users to think back and forth between 3D and 2D objects and environments to engage different parts of their brain, and see beyond what is literally in front them."

Designed for a wide and varied audience, Crush tells the story of Dan, a man with a lifetime of unresolved issues and bottled up emotions that has turned him into a nervous insomniac who is too tired to turn his life around. Desperate for a cure, he turns to hypnosis. It is during this state that he is given one last chance to sort through the wreckage of his past, before he loses the last thing he has – his sanity.

Crush is scheduled for release in Summer 2007

The main character looks goofy. Otherwise, looks like it deserves some old fashioned message board hype.

Even after watching the video, I really have no idea how that plays.

But yeah, it looks very, very cool. I'll have to keep my eye on it.

Looks like you setup the camera in one of the views orthogonal to the scenery, and then you 'crush' the 3D space of the level into 2D plane. Then you jumpt and climb around on that 2D plane to accomplish something and then 'uncrush' it back to 3D. Looks like you can platform in both 3D and 2D space and have to use both to traverse around and solve problems.

neat idea, but the artstyle on the display in this area of the game makes the crushed 2d versions of the level seem far too basic and pedestrian.

the video looks really clever. but i hope there's a semi-cohesive story to match the art style. it looks a bit too puzzle-y.

Mmm, seems like a pretty cool concept. Let down a fair bit by some really ugly and awkward art direction.

this looks awesome, though it's difficult to imagine how it'll play. actually -- how often does that happen? usually it's only too obvious how a game will play. let's hope it turns out well.

Sega better pimp this as much as possible. It could definitely draw the Oddworld/Flashback/Out of this World fans out of the woodwork.

they made Battalion wars which was a very good tactical RTS/shooter hybrid..

im quite hyped for this game after seeing the vid.. too bad i dont have a PSP

finally PSP is getting some decent amount of original software... not as great as the DS probably.. but i have the feeling that it will establish itself in a quite good way.. (because 2004 to 2006 was really meh for th ePSP)

I thought that was developer at LucasArts internally? In any case, such a shame for being dropped, it was a great concept.

Kuju are pretty good in the crazy game idea department (Battalion Wars, Traxion (RIP), Crush), in spite of all the shovelware they make to support themselves.

okay ill change the comment to "finally PSP is getting some decent amount of original software"

anyways i did not look at the PSP as a game with many original software.. but i might be wrong since i was on the DS side from day one (got mine at launch) and was too busy buying DS games..

but certainly games like this and a pricecut could make me consider buying one

I do hope they clean up the animation, though, as that is always an important part of any platformer.
