Sony has shipped over 4 million PS3 consoles #1

Thanks to Telekill at the Gamespot forums.

http://www.kabutocho.net/news/livenews/dl_79854.html
(It's in Japanese and apparantly it sais that Sony has sent out over 4 million consoles from their factory. This story was from last week.)

I guess that includes those European consoles traveling on that boat as well.

Either that or there are 2.2 million consoles on the shelve. A month out you think those PAL PS3s are in the warehouses?

How many 360 units where shipped at this time last year? I think the PS3 is pulling similar numbers, which basically means nothing anyway.

How many have been sold?

So what was the PS3s LTD now? How many of those consoles are sitting on shelves as opposed to ones that sold?

The number should be around 1.8m sold through now I think. Also remember that one million of those consoles are on it's way to Europe.

I hope their R&D guys have been working their asses off on manufacturing costs, or Sony pissed away a lot of money they could have conserved by pushing back production schedules, and the system would still be in decent supply.

Shipped not sold. Remember, they sold only 230,000 units last month. In other words, shipped means jack shit, because they've shipped about 1,000,000,000 PSP's according to them by now.

Judging by their PSP shipment numbers right after retail interest sharply declined, the shipment numbers Sony was stating (and I'm sure it's the case with these as well) must have been counted not only as having (1) left the factory, but (2) been sitting in some sort of transient in-between phase where they haven't been ordered up by retailers either.

Or maybe it's that retailers have made these enormous orders and don't want to have them filled until they can clear their own current stock (not everyone has the distribution muscle of Best Buy). I imagine that when Circuit City tells Sony to hold onto its next 50,000 PS3s it's had promised to them, Sony still counts them as shipped even though they're surely accounted for in some Sony warehouse.

so what about their other competitor who has been outselling them week in week out since they launched?

was it the end of march or april they had hoped to ship 6 million? looks like they might make it.

The launch is in three weeks. The boats may already have reached EU from what we know.

End of March. It's going to be tight. My wild guess is that in May or so when the console is over-stocked Sony will go back to the drawing board and really focus on making the console as cheap as possible to build with factory adjustments..etc.

Isn't PS3's LTD at roughly 1.5 million? I know the system is quite a bit away from 700,000 in Japan and its U.S. sales aren't much better.

Both Sony and Nintendo set goals of 6 million by the end of March, which Sony held firm on even after the various delays and production problems last year.

At the end of January it was 1.5-1.6 I think. February ends today as you know.

All kidding aside, 2 million units in the worldwide channel is about right isn't it? As in, what you need to have a readily available console worldwide.

Actually if they're counting the 1 million for Europe that would leave 1.2 million on the shelves for Japan and the US. Makes a bit more sense, although with those units already in the hole for Europe that 6 mill mark by the end of March is stretching.

Isn't the deal with Sony's definition of shipped that they literally mean shipped from the factory? As opposed to having sold & shipped them to retailers?

It's quite possible 1.8 mil are sold, 1 mil headed for Europe, and another 300k for each of the 3 major territories are in the pipes rather than actually with retailers.

Well to be honest it looks like they can reach 6 million shipped, or near enough. Sales, on the other hand...

EDIT: So after all that, it seems manufacturing wasn't much of a problem for them anyway. their only problem is everything else.

Nintendo looks set to beat their own goal by at least a million (maybe two?) and sell every single one.

Couldn't a bunch of these also be that Gundam bundle? Not sure how many that is though :/

Roughly

1 million Japan
2 million US
1 million PAL

Makes sense right?

US LTD crept past 1 million sometime in February, Japanese is still well under 1 million, PAL is, as we know, 1 million for launch.

The sell-through optimistically for all 4 million will be mid April I'm guessing.
