Gametrailers interviews Jack Tretton "open to changing the Sixaxis controller" #1

By including Blu-ray in the PS3 we're taking some lumps in the short term so we can say 'I told you so' in the long term."

Quote:
$599 is a lot of money, but it's the world's worst-kept secret that we're selling it at a significant investment from Sony. We're investing along with the consumer."

Vicious Sid: Would Sony ever consider releasing an updated "pro" Sixaxis controller, maybe with offset analog sticks and rumble support at a slightly higher price?

Jack Tretton: We used to have a narrow approach to controllers. If you really wanted to [move outside the standard controller], we left it up to third party manufacturers. But now we're moving to a regional approach. You will see peripherals coming from SCEA that will address the interests of the U.S. consumer. I don't have anything to tell you specifically, but we're certainly open to changing the Sixaxis controller if it addressed North American gamers.

Please make this happen soon.

I was one of the 6 people that was actually happy with the boomerang controller...

...but I like how light the SIXAXIS is. If they add rumble- good... I won't have to hear people whining about that crap anymore. Personally, I couldn't care less about rumble. I found better things to entertain my sensitive testicles.

I really hope they get the revamped (rumble included) sixaxis controller out (packaged with ps3) before this fall 07 when a lot of the bigger games come out.

They also need to get the ball rolling and let developers know that they can / and should program rumble into their software titles.

Bro Buzz: The PS3 is as much as multimedia machine as it is a games console. How is Sony doing when it comes to spreading that message?

Jack Tretton: The honest answer is that it's a struggle for us as a company, as it's a struggle for any gaming company. You want to stay true to your roots as a gaming company. At the end of the day, the reason why this machine will be successful is because it's the ultimate gaming system. But I think we do the industry and the technology an injustice if we assume that all gamers care about is gaming and that they don't do anything else with their time. Because our roots have been in creating hardware and software and peripherals, we rely on other companies within the Sony corporation to help enunciate that vision. So we're finding ourselves wearing more hats than we have before.

Sony am A55Hats confirmed.

We have a new phenomenon as well in recent years, something we didn't have during the PlayStation or PlayStation 2. And that is everybody is a journalist - if you have a PC, then you're a journalist. There are a lot of people weighing in with opinions who are just individual consumers, a very small and vocal group of consumers, that just want everything for free. I'd love that to be the case, but that's not how the world works.

When it comes to regional controllers, I think that concerns layout only. Rumble would be something that comes worldwide but I could see different controller designs for the various market (like with the controller S for Xbox1).

I would be very happy to have the option, actually. Sell it exclusively online or something. I would buy PS3 shooters.

They can buy the other one. It's not like it fundamentally changes inputs, it doesn't fracture the userbase.
