Any way it can match 2.4 million in 24 hours with a much smaller installed fanbase?

First day sales of 2.7 million. Just a tad higher than that of Halo 2's first day.

well there's all the halo 2 multiplayer fanatics... most people who bought halo 2 on the first day were going for the single player.

At first I was thinking that Halo 3 wouldn't do as good as Halo 2 due to the current userbase. But after seeing GoW (which is between 3 and 4 mil last I heard), I now wouldn't doubt if H3 surpassed H2.

Amazon just opened up pre-orders for the Legendary SKU yesterday, so that's probably why.

Anyone else read the big article on bungie.net about the making of it? They drop how many are being produced - 450k. A lot at face value, but probably a tiny fraction of what Halo 3 will do out the gates.

Halo 3 will sell 4 million copies by the end of Microsoft fiscal year (the one H# gets released in, so that's around May-June 08 right?).

5-6 million when it's all said and done.

More importantly, how many Xbox users will but their 360 when Halo 3 comes out? Especially with juicy bundles or a MS price drop...

I don't know about first day sales, but Halo 3 will probably outsell Halo 2 in the long run. I'll tell you this much....it will generate a hell of a lot more revenue for MS with the way it's going to be priced.

I just wished GTA4 and Halo 3 didn't come out so close to each other.

There's deffinitely going to be some cannibalizing of some great games this fall with these 2 juggernauts getting most of the people's money.

Considering the 360 has been more succesful in Europe, I think it will.

They probably made a pricing mistake that everyone jumped on. I bought Rainbow Six: Vegas for the PS3 for $39.99 (which also shot up the charts) . . . and then they sent me an email saying it was a mistake and they would not honor the sale. Jerks.

Recently they had Splinter Cell for the xbox 360 at $19.99 and it shot up to the top . . . I hope they are honoring that deal.

Can't wait, going to be the coolest google image search ever. :)

At the gamestop I'm temping at we've sold about 200 preorders, over 40 of which are legendary edition. Supposedly Gamestop is pulling the reserve sku soon but they told us that over a week ago and its still active. Guitar Hero 2 for 360 isn't though.

Lol, what?

I say it will be around the 5 million mark. It depends though, if MS bundles it and sells it at a reasonable price I can see it make around 6 million.

3M in first 2 weeks, 6M in first 3 months, 10M lifetime sales.

Cut those numbers by 8/10th and you've got MGS4 sales (0.6M, 1.2M and 2M).

Halo is a phenonemon that I will never understand. Halo 3 will probably be the first in the series that I will actually buy and play for a good amount of time. The combination of next-generation graphics, and my newfound interest in shooters has me excited for this one. On the down low, I'm actually looking forward to Halo Wars even more than Halo 3.

Mostly because Live wasn't as popular then. I think for Halo 3 it will be a mix of both. :)

GTA San Andreas kicked butt! That is what happened. Halo 2 was yet another FPS and on a platform with a much smaller. (or were you just comparing GTA:SA on xbox to Halo2? Well, even then GTA was the better game, IMHO.)

It would have been an interesting comparison if both games were just on the Xbox.

The 360 is tracking well ahead of the first Xbox in Europe.

Halo 3 will do far better than Halo 2 at least in part because it's coming out relatively early in the console's lifecycle. Halo 2, in retrospect, was the Xbox's last big hit. The early demise of that system cut the long-term sales of the title off early. (Of course, it's sold over 100k in the US so far this year, so everything is relative.)

I'll just say that I think most people will be surprised at what this title does, both at launch at long-term.

I am not so sure people will be surprised because I think most people are expecting it to sell extremely well. In all honesty I was surprised looking at sales charts that the last two did not do that well, this one though I think should get around 1-14 million total and 4 million first month.

The last two did not do that well? Halo 2 has sold eight million copies. What is your threshold for doing well?

Isn't Halo 2 still outselling Resistance monthly?
