The Silver gave Japan a taste of what Grasshopper was capable of in the adventure game genre.
One year after its creation, Grasshopper revealed the first fruits of its labor, The Silver. Japan had seen many "detective adventure" games over the years, but perhaps none quite as bold as this one.
It's 1999 in a city known simply as Ward 24. The High-degree Murder Division (HMD) of the police department is investigating a series of recent murders. Based on the murder pattern, the HMD determines the ostensible killer: Camui Uehara, who killed several government officials years ago -- but was shot dead by an HMD detective. The plot thickens and the chase is on to find the real killer.
The game plays out in two chapters: The first, entitled "Transmitter," was written by Suda and focuses on the HMD's investigation into the murder, while second part, called "Placebo," follows a freelance journalist who does his own investigative work on the case.
Along with the enigmatic story, The Silver's visual style gave a preview of Grasshopper's future work. Words dance around the screen at all times, seemingly random yet logical within the story's context. The settings are often dark, always fitting for a brooding character. Even the font, large and bold, is memorable. These gimmicks made up a style GHM called "Film Window," which referred to the practice of arranging text and graphic windows in a handcrafted manner.
Adventure fans in Japan appreciated The Silver, but in an industry glutted with like-minded clones, the game didn't garner much acclaim. Down but not out, GHM continued to Sony's next system.
This game sounds very interesting though. I'm slowly morphing into an adventure game junkie.
