Another Year, another Dragon Ball Z game.

PRESS RELEASE: Atari Announces the Ultimate Chapter in the Dragon Ball Z(R): Budokai Tenkaichi Series
Press release supplied by Games Press 14:40 (GMT) 21/05/2007

NEW YORK, May 21 - Atari, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATAR) one of the world's most recognized brands and a third-party video game publisher, today announced that Dragon Ball Z ® : Budokai Tenkaichi TM 3 is in development for Wii TM and PlayStation ® 2 computer entertainment system. Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 combines the lightning fast fighting and action that have made Budokai Tenkaichi 1 and Budokai Tenkaichi 2 the #1 fighting games of 2005 and 2006. Developed by NAMCO BANDAI Games Inc. / Spike, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 is slated to release during the 2007 holiday season.

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 delivers an extreme 3D fighting experience, improving upon last year's game with over 150 playable characters, enhanced fighting techniques, beautifully refined effects and shading techniques, making each character's effects more realistic, and over 20 battle stages. In addition, an improved control system for the Wii will allow players to easily mimic signature moves and execute devastating energy attacks as they are performed in the Dragon Ball Z animated series.

"Atari is incredibly excited to offer the ultimate chapter in the Budokai Tenkaichi series with over 20 new characters that have never been seen in any other DBZ video games such as Nail, King Cold and King Vegeta and battle stages that fans will love," said Emily Anadu, Senior Product Manager, Atari, Inc. "Each year, the developers refine the game to bring fans closer to feeling like they are actually playing the show."

In addition to the unprecedented number of characters and improved Wii control system, the environments have also been enhanced to feature day and night stages. The power of the moon in the night stages gives players additional ways to transform their characters and lets fans recreate some of their favorite memories from the show.

The immensely popular Dragon Ball Z ® series is the gold standard of anime-based video games, with more than 25 different games and over 10 million units sold since May 2002.

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 is set for release this holiday season. For more information on Dragon Ball Z video games, please visit http://www.atari.com/dragonballz.

So basically, if you wait longer to purchase a Budokai, the better the game becomes.

Right.

Also, I'm just wondering what they'll do when they run out of potential playable characters?

The last one actually featured a pretty good amount of GT characters and a few DragonBall characters, I think.

DBZ: BT2 had serious Roshi, General Tao and kid Goku from DB.

And uhhh there were quite a few characters from GT (Baby, uhh other stuff)

Looking forward to this game, BT2 was excellent.

Also, do these games have DB characters?

GT characters have been in the game since Budokai Tenkaichi 1...

DB characters in Budokai Tenkaichi 2: Kid Goku, Oozoaru, Kame, Kame powered up (the form with increased muscle mass that he used before firing the Kamehameha a few times in Dragon Ball), Gohan (Goku's grandpa), TaoPaiPai. Yajirobe is in the game too.

The European/Japanese version of the Wii game had a few extra characters, most from DB: Pillaf's robot, Pillaf's combined robot, Cyborg TaoPaiPai and Piccolo Daimao.

GT characters in BT2: the SSJ4s, Pan, Uub (+fusion with Majin Buu) , Baby Vegeta (4 different forms, including Oozoaru), Super 17, #1 Dragon (+ Absorbing the 6 other Dragon Balls).

I would really like a game with only the earlier characters in the manga, before they went with all the flying/fireball/transformation thing.

DBZ needs to go 2D again this gen. Über-resolutioned sprites ftw, these 3D-look-alikes are starting to get boring.

Good grief....STILL no create a char?

You'd thikn with Dragon Quest IX adding that feature, that the OTHER uber-popular series starring Toriyama's designs would follow suit by now.

I guess they'll save that for "Sparking!" 3 or 4... :lol :lol

I want a game that spans all three series, plus the movies.

That'd be great.

I also consider getting the new DBZ game because I was a fan back in the day, and they seem decent enough, but I always end up not getting it because of the less than stellar reviews and other, better games coming out around the same time. As a result I've never bought one of these games, and seeing as it's coming out during the holidays along with a billion other good games, I might wind up not getting this one either.

Well BT2 went from the beginning of DBZ to the end of GT with all the movies, so they just need to add in DB stuff.

SDBZ sucked.

The Tenkaichi franchise is the closest thing to emulating the show.

And it makes for a very competitive fighter!

Yeah, I'm sure we'll see Tenkaichi at Evo 2008... :lol

Super DBZ wasn't a direct emulation of the show, but it was much closer to a competitive fighter than any of the Tenkaichi titles. Both needed work which is why I wanted to see a Super sequel.

What worries me is the thought that they won't add in create-a-character, the one thing that would really save the series at this point, until they run out of characters to add. :\ And it's annoying, because with that DB Online game featuring create-a-character, BT3 will just seem to have something missing without it.

They could try to make a good fighting engine instead of the 20 clone characters one they have.
