Anyone Else Seen Of/Heard Of/Played the Shmups Skill Test?
#1
First off, apologizes in advance if this has been discussed before, but I've done multiple searches and have yet to see or hear of any post about it (but I'm kinda piss poor at doing more advance searching, so I could have easily missed it). Anyway...
I was in Japan a couple weeks ago, and naturally I checked out the arcade scene quite extensively. While in Akihabara, I came across this... ![]() ![]() ![]() Basically, it’s a series of tests, presented in the form of short exercises to flex one's various shump related skills, like dodging, hit box targeting, and the such. Kinda like Brain Age... but for shooters! Each game is packed with all sorts of references and in-jokes... one had you simply shooting at tokens, with the boss being some old sit-down, 80's bar-style Space Invaders machines, pictured in the first snapshot. In the third is another game in which you have to shoot the garbage into the trash bin. I couldn't really understand what was going on since it was heavy text-wise, at least the in-between rounds, analysis portion of the game. Has anyone else played this or have any additional info? BTW, if anyone is interested, I have like a billion more pics from my trip to Japan, taken at other arcades, game stores, toy shops, and other places, over at my site (though it might be best to start here). Its a 2 game set with Exzeal from the very small developer called Triangle Service, They were responsible for XII Stag on Taito G-Net and Trizeal on the Naomi.
Its rumoured that the two game pack might see a DC release but its probably wishfull thinking with the GDRom situation as it is. http://www.triangleservice.co.jp/ http://www.triangleservice.co.jp/htm...007/index.html |

i recoil in horror from this unholy marriage between the goodness that is 2d shooting and the evil that is brain traning
though actually i'm glad to hear that triangle service is still around. it's also interesting to see that the word 'shmups' has filtered back to japanese developers |

I dont know if this is cool or totally useless, it will be cool to get a ranking on how good you are at it, but I dont think it will help that much in making you better. I would rather spend money on playing a hard Shmup over and over until I get better instead of doing small tests and such.

A shooting mini-game ... game. OK.
Honestly if this means it gets Triangle enough money to make a better shooter down the road, all the power to them. The concept sounds novel but the screens look typical of their development. I more suspect that some other company will take this idea further enough to make a hit in the future. I got to thinking of what competition this game could face and I have to ask because I'm too lazy to scour shmups.com - what's up with Otomedius? Is that still coming or what? |

I came in here thinking of that shmup bullet dodging freeware japanese game, where it had the bullet patterns of a lot of famous games and you could practice dodging. Does anyone know where I could find that ?
