But the real question is... WILL YOU?
Us hardcore must realise how insignificant we are in the big picture.Video game companies are trying harder than ever to turn new players into lifelong gamers. Half of Americans are gamers, but a lot of the unfaithful just don't see the appeal of expensive game consoles. The game companies want to convert them.
One answer is new technology. Not the kind that delivers better and bolder graphics. Instead, companies are embracing technologies for creatively inspired accessories that plug into game consoles and offer users new freedom in how they interact with the machine.
This quest to entice non-gamers or casual gamers into the fold is playing out at the E3 conference in Santa Monica this week.
"The goal is to make games irresist ible," said Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America.
No one is driving this more than his company. Nintendo's Wii console has been sold out every one of the 33 weeks that it has been on sale, thanks to the innovative game controller that senses motion, such as when the player takes a swipe at a baseball.
Wednesday, Nintendo introduced a device dubbed a "Wii balance board." It measures your weight, body mass index, posture and center of gravity, giving you a reason to stand naked in front of your game console (if you really want to). The board goes with a new game coming in the fall, "Wii Fit," which forces gamers to go through all sorts of exercises while they're playing games, from butting soccer balls with their heads to posing in various yoga moves.
"Games like
this for the mass market are now the target, not the afterthought," said Billy Pidgeon, an analyst at International Data. "Nintendo changed the game."
Nintendo also introduced two other clever pieces of plastic - the Wii driving wheel and the Wii Zapper - which enable players to drive cars or shoot guns more easily using natural gestures instead of pressing a lot of buttons. In the past, accessories consisted of extra controllers or memory cards. Now they're proving key to profits and getting new gamers involved.
While Sony and Microsoft go after the hard-core gamers first and then expand, Nintendo is starting with the non-gamers and casual gamers, working its way inward back to the hard-core. The two rivals recognize this threat, but they're in tough spots because their consoles are so much more expensive than Nintendo's $250 Wii and $129 handheld DS. The Wii Zapper will sell for a mere $19.95.
The combination of low cost and clever ideas is turning Nintendo into a steamroller. Fils-Aime revealed a few tidbits that prove this: Nintendo's new console and handheld DS account for 69 percent of the growth of the video game market in the past year. And a third of Nintendo's new systems are being bought by women, compared with just 20 percent in 2005.
And the Japanese game market, stagnant for eight years, has grown 114 percent this year, and Nintendo leads there. Nintendo is now setting the direction of the industry.
Even as Microsoft touted "Halo 3" and Sony displayed the dazzling graphics of "Killzone 2," both games for the hard-core faithful, the companies gave nods in Nintendo's direction. Microsoft unveiled a new controller that is far simpler than its current Xbox 360 game pads. The device has four small colorful buttons and one big red one. It will be ideal for a new trivia game in which you can watch a movie clip and then identify the movie it came from. But unlike the Wii controller, the new Big Button remote can't sense motion.
Sony also touted its online virtual world, Home, as a place where the denizens of MySpace and YouTube can come to hang out to play casual games or just socialize with their friends. Phil Harrison, head of Sony's game studios, demonstrated how you could log on with an "avatar," or virtual character, walk up to a television and play the Sony karaoke game "Sing Star."
Electronic Arts, meanwhile, dedicated its entire news conference to casual games. One of them is "Rock Band," produced in concert with MTV and Harmonix, which allows an entire family to plug drums and guitars into the console. Building on the appeal of its predecessor "Guitar Hero," "Rock Band" doesn't require anyone to know how to play games or guitars to pick up and start playing.
Nintendo is dishing out some hard lessons to Sony and Microsoft right now as it schools them on how to expand the game market. All technology companies that deal with consumers should pay attention.

There have been so many Nintendo is doomed articles that it is hard to remember.
They may be right.
Or just ban them all.
Wait a minute... Are you telling me that Nintendo is in charge of the Media Cabal that Runs the World?Originally Posted by Death_Born
It's like Nintendo is controlling the press through mind-control. Once they realized the usefulness of the Wii, they never even took a second glance at any other company, relegating them to "these guys only make stuff for hard-core gamers."
thankfully, they ignored GAFFers and all other message board junkies that insisted they were idiots and betraying hardcore gamers. Not only is the insult unjustified with tons of great core-games coming out (AWDS2, BWII, Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime, Brawl, Final Fantasy CC, RE UC etc.)
Omg a sane person thank god.Originally Posted by LanceStern

Anyone who voices moderate disagreement for established opinion must be dealt with harshly! Right thinking must prevail!

The guy has more contacts within the Xbox division than any other journalist. He may write for a mainstream newspaper, but the dude has gaming credentials out the ass.

Your reading comprehension is very poor. Nintendo ignored "GAFFers and all other message board junkies that insisted they were idiots and betraying hardcore gamers", they did not and do not ignore Nintendo fans like Lance.Originally Posted by Karma Kramer

I posted two and just because you don't like them doesn't mean I should be banned. There has to be members that are worse than me on this board.
Are you being intentionally obtuse or is the stupidity genuine? Assuming the worst, I'll spell it out for you using Lance's own words: "Not only is the insult unjustified with tons of great core-games coming out (AWDS2, BWII, Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime, Brawl, Final Fantasy CC, RE UC etc.)"Originally Posted by Karma Kramer
