Disney Appreciation Thread #1

The "old cartoon" thread got me nostalgic for my childhood, which triggered a Disneyfest in my apartment. There are a lot of scenes in the Disney canon that actually make me feel like a child again--that invoke a sense of nostalgia strong enough to evoke an emotional response. Here are some of my favorite Disney moments and whatnot:

Trick or Treat is a short from the 50's that I first saw clips of during a Halloween special on the Disney Channel set entirely to music. Sometime later I saw the entire short--I still remember being freaked out by Donald running through the fields and crashing down his own closet door when I was little.

I don't know a single person who has seen Disney's "A Christmas Carol" and not loved it. The character play on the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future always got me.

A lesser known but widely-liked "short", the Prince and the Pauper ran 25 minutes and was shown in theaters before The Rescuers Down Under. Ever since childhood I've remembered watching this but have failed until just recently at finding it in any form of home entertainment. Great little story.

The mousetrap scene from The Great Mouse Detective lurked in my subconscious all through child and adulthood--I saw it as a child but forgot I'd ever seen it, then about 16 years later I saw it again, and during the Mousetrap scene, jumped out of my chair and yelled "I've seen this before! Holy crap!" It's gone on to become my favorite Disney movie.

Whether it be in film or Kingdom Hearts, Maleficent's always been my favorite villain. There's something about a woman so genuinely evil that she becomes a sort of physical embodiment of two-facedness--turning into a hulking dragon nonetheless--that is undeniably awesome.

My favorite ride at WDWorld has to be The Haunted Mansion--the cartoonish horror atmosphere is something Disney has always been fabulous at. Great ride. Notice something new every time I'm there.

So what are some of your guys' favorite Disney things?

The old stuff is great.
My family had a ton of the 40's-50's shorts recorded on beta (lulz)... used to watch them over and over.

Goofy's instructional videos were always in rotation, as was anything with Donald -- Double Trouble being a favourite.
Older stuff even, like The Grasshopper and the Ant make me very nostalgic. Good times!

Awesome stuff. So much goodness came out of Disney while the man was still alive. I love the Goofy shorts, especially the How to and sports ones of course, own the complete collection. Donald of course is awesome. Mickey's Christmas Carol is fantastic. The Oscar nominated/winning Winnie the Pooh shorts from the 60's are amazing. Dumbo and 101 Dalmations are among my favorite animated films ever. I love Pinocchio, Fantasia, Bambi, and The Jungle Book for what they are.

The craft they had back then was just unmatched. People still look to Ward Kimball's designs, Milt Kahl's masterful animation and draftsmanship, Frank & Ollie's soul they put into their work. Huge inspirations. They weren't perfect, a lot of people like to focus on the shortcomings of an empire so influential and rooted into our culture as a whole, the bad it did. But they were still hugely successful for a lot of reasons. Their advancement and near-perfection of a craft technically and principle-wise, their power and what experimentations it allowed for like the space series, Disneyland itself, the dramatic stylings they invoked into their work.

It takes a lot to gain any kind of power in Hollywood, and to make what you want to make. What Walt Disney did, pushing ahead a medium and creating a true empire is just mindboggling. He gave us a mountain of work to look back on at any leisure.

I love Lion King as well. I think this thread is about the older stuff though, well, that's what inspired it. Not sure, but I believe we might have had an early 90's Disney appreciation thread before. A lot of people loved those films, and Disney tv around that time. The craft wasn't as good overall I'd say, but they were hitting their mark a lot around that time. Entertainment wise it's up there with arguably any other stretch of years for Disney.

That's generally the case for most things.

Edit - wait, triple negatives hurt my brain

I think Lion King was the last truly great "Disney" film to come out in our lifetimes. Aladdin probably comes close.

I love most of classic Disney. I'm not afraid to say something like Bambi is a great movie(Or that Fantasia is a mixed bag at best). The Disney revival in the late 80s/early 90s produced some definite classics as well. The company is pretty sad these days though.

As a kid 'Scary Tales' was one of my favorite VHS tapes. It had several good Donald toons plus classic stuff like the 'Skeleton Dance'. I re-watched for the first time in over a decade last year and I still enjoyed it.

I always loved the story of Sleepy Hollow that they ran in their Halloween specials, but I can never find it to watch again.

Loved loved LOVED the Christmas Carol.

And yes, Maleficent is Disney's best villain. Ever. It can't be denied. She's freaky yet likable, and her theme song is one of the creepiest pieces of music I've ever listened to.

Reverse these two and I agree with everything you've said. It saddens me that they've pretty much abandoned traditional animated movies. Their most recent theatrical cell stuff was certainly a step below what has come to be expected from Disney. Most memorable Disney stuff is a retelling of old folk tales with Disney "magic" added to it. Crap like Emperor's New Groove, Lilo and Stitch, and Tarzan (to a lesser degree but still not that great) really brought Disney down.

Combine the rise of cg with the release of these sub-par "classics" and the cheapening of their franchises with numerous sequels and they practically ran cell animation out of town, rather than it naturally losing its appeal.

Skeleton Dance
Silly Symphonies
Mickey, Donald, and Goofy shorts
90's renaissance
old Zorro tv show that they used to show late at night on the Disney Channel

And someone mentioned the Great Mouse Detective...man, that clock tower scene blew my mind back when I was young!!! Speaking of great scenes...

The battle on the mountain in Mulan (one of my favorite animated movies; has great music)

Stampede scene in The Lion King (classic)

The animation in Snow White was amazing also..was that whole movie rotoscoped or something?

That's got the Sleepy Hollow film on it, as well as the dubiously famous "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride".

I also found the Trick or Treat short online:

I love that thing.
