Well, the disc-drive is silent as far as I am concerned. All you can hear is the fan noise, which is a constant hum. That was all I could hear, though. No DVD spinning or caching, etc. only fan noise.

High Five to Wonderkins! Same manu date and all. :P

Also, given the size of the AV plug (unchanged from the previous Premium 360s), I can't plug-in an HDMI cable and also have the AV cable plugged-in. Digital output + HDMI will have to wait for the MS or third party adapter.

The length of this post...apologies.

thanks for the update. can you confirm that it does -not- come with either HDMI or Optical audio splitter cable?

While this is great news, I constantly feel as if MS just keeps playing catch up to the PS3, in technical terms. I mean do they plan ahead in weekly intervals?

Xbox 360 Elite - 120GB, HDMI
Xbox 360 Core "Falcon" - No HDD, HDMI
Xbox 360 Premium "Falcon" - 20GB, HDMI
Xbox 360 LE Halo 3 - 20GB, HDMI?

Wow! They both graduated together... Cue "It's a Small World After All!" I have to say, you're right with the noise level. It's pretty much just a hum. The no-caching sound with the DVD-drive is a big plus.

According to my source, Microsoft wants to cut through all their existing inventory of hardware. They will then quietly "soft launch" a new version of the Core and Premium hardware in late August or September that will include an HDMI port. It's also expected that this new hardware will feature the 65nm process for the CPU and quieter DVD drives. The new hardware will ship in boxes very similar to what we saw on store shelves now, but there will be a small "call out" on the box so you know you're getting a system with the HDMI connection.

If you really want to get people confused start listing the individual accessories that come with each. Only the Elite comes with the HDMI cable and separate audio output for stereo/optical according to those who've got the new premium. Plus the Halo 3 one comes with the play and charge kit, the others dont, all except the Core come with the component HD cables and a headset...decisions decisions for the consumer to make!

Heh, I paid a little bit more for my PSP at launch than my 360 at launch, but then again, I bought a whole shitload of games, movies and accessories. :P And warranty. :P

No, some of the upgrades affect game performance (faster loading), and one upgrade allows you to play your PSP games on your TV...that functionality is built into a new I/O port.

Like I said, it's not a new trend, and it's a trend that is going to continue.

I guess that is what it comes down to - do I feel like giving MS more money after the experience I have had so far? Hell no. So that means I won't be buying another one. I bought extra warranty on my 360 as well.

I don't think I am completely wrong about standardization. Consoles in the past have certainly received upgrades, but most have been add-ons or rationalisation of units such as the slimmer PS2.

The tv out on the PSP is pretty cool feature which would be compelling to upgrade I'm sure, which would annoy me as well! :(

The PS3 seems safe except for the controllers, so that'll probably be my next investment.

What will the stupid lemming consumers do?? Their brains will explode as they shop in Best Buy with the choice of sixteen SKUs!!! They'll probably think it is all too confusing and buy a PS3 instead.

The multiple SKU issue is not nearly as confusing as everyone here makes it out to be. Joe Casual is probably going to be in a Best Buy or Walmart when he decides to pick up a 360.

-He is not going to bother with an Elite because it is too expensive. He may not even know about it since Microsoft is not focusing all of their advertising on it.
-The Halo 3 edition is irrelevant to someone like him. I also doubt we will see tons of these on store shelves anyway.
-He probably couldn't give two shits about 65nm and HDMI so he is not going to be looking at lot numbers on boxes.

That leaves him with the same options as there were in 2005; the Premium or the Core. This time they are $50 and $30 cheaper, respectively.

MS has done to the 360 what everyone was screaming for them to do for almost two years. They added HDMI, fixed the RROD, and dropped the price. The fact that people are bitching is unbelievable.

I'm blind, confirmed. Right-hand side if looking at the box from the front. It's listed in features. Here's a side-by-side of the "new" Premium and "old" Premium boxes:

And with that. I'll stop with the pictures. I think people have what they need.

I understand your position completely. But I think it's pretty clear that this is a norm now...and so you can't be surprised that others don't feel the same way.

Like with all products, people like to see it get better, to the point where people are happy to pay for them again.

Originally Posted by SealSqueal:

Actually I expect these things more from Sony, because their last 2 consoles got upgrades in the same manner...don't forget the built in network adapter (which I paid $50, I think it came out for more) for the slim PS2, along with the PSP upgrades.

I don't mean to discourage you from buying it...but if you are the type who gets mad at this sort of thing...you might want to wait? The PS2 upgrade occurred many years after launch, but the PSP upgrade occurred just over 2 years after it was released...so it's hard to gauge when such things are going to happen.

I've come to accept these things. Being an early adopter nowadays, whether it's for consoles, or iPods, or iPhones...the iteration that comes out in 2 or 3 years is always going to be better in many ways.

Well, I bought a PS2 at launch. I wasn't outraged when they streamlined it in future editions. When they released a slim with a built in network adapter, I didn't get mad.

Same thing applies to the PSP. Got it at launch, and I'm not mad about the Slim coming out. New features, better loading times...sure, I wish I had that, but I bought it at launch.

I can understand the concern about a console that is far more reliable than the previous iteration, but things like the console getting quieter, to have extra ports, to feature cooler hardware...that's all stuff we've seen before. Every manufacturer does it, to every product. MP3 players, phones, fridges, you name it.

They may have added HDMI, but too little too late for me, i got it and then BOOM hey we got an HDMI system... fuck.

Fixed RROD? We still dont know that. They added another heatsink but we still havent seen any stats showing failure rate is lower on new models.

The pricedrop is almost as laughable as sony dropping ps2s by $30.

When all is said and done, I believe the 360 will reach around that 3-5% failure rate. The console has only sold 10 million WW, if the console that I bought today is fixed as far as heat problems et al, their failure rate average will plunge.

The Elite comes with the dongle you need if you want to use Optical audio instead of HDMI audio. Not sure if it is sold separately yet. I would call Microsoft and complain. See if you can get them to send you one.
