You PS3 guys are going to miss out cause the Stranglehold demo is actually pretty good. It gets even better once you start unlocking additional abilities.

This is for the Euro version BTW. I received that press release also.

As of last night, Midway North America informed us that:

Quote:
The full version of Stranglehold is currently expected to ship on August 27th for the Xbox 360 and PC, and September 17th for the PlayStation 3. PC and PlayStation 3 demos coming soon

Well, ps3fanboy is run by Joystiq, a banned site. EDIT: Joy Stiq

They also trolled the f*** out of Ratchet and Uncharted in their E3 hands-on sessions too.

But they are just relaying a source in this case, to be fair.

I'm surprised at this, mainly because of the special edition and region free debate which has been discussed lately, sounded like it was very close. Perhaps it failed certification or something.

Does anybody have a link to the PR that was released today? Could this delay be for the Euro version?

No we were discussing the state of the print used by Criterion, who are renowned for using the best possible source materials. Their DVD release did not look like it had really fantastic source materials, which doesn't bode well for an HD transfer. A pixel perfect transfer riddled with detritus and grain is still not that great a viewing experience, regardless of the fidelity.

Stranglehold should be hitting this year, aside from UE3 issues I can't see why there'd be any other delays.

With the PS3 version delayed it's going to be a little tougher for Stranglehold to be the bestselling game of the year. I'm sure Midway have high hopes though!

given that the demo killed Xbox live, i'm not sure how stupid Midway are to guess it's going to be their best selling title this year.

I think any impressions that it's a iffy transfer come from the recent BD release of the movie, which had some issues (the only main problem I recall is that the subtitles are bad--the subtitles are taken from the english dub, not a translation of the original dub). I think there was also a framing or aspect ratio issue. I forget. Nothing that sounded too serious.

It wasn't even a press release. It was just a note from Midway UK listing the release dates for the Xbox 360 and PC versions w/o mentioning the PS3 version.

framing and aspect ratio would be serious to me, espescially if it's distorted, but frankly i'd take it over the shit we've gotten of this on DVD over the years.

They basically cropped the film wrong and then stretched and zoomed in on it to get it to fit the 16:9 frame "correctly". The closest analogy to how the new transfer looks is almost like watching 4:3 SD content on your digital cable and using the cable box to zoom in and stretch it to fit the 16:9 screen. And yes the subtitles are actually dubtitles.

Granted, I don't have a lot of Blu Ray movies at the moment, but the one I'm anticipating the most is Lawrence of Arabia on Blu Ray. I haven't seen a lot of them, but I know some are going to be good and some are going to be horrible.

What I was referring to back in that other thread was that classic movies that are being described have been stored in optimal conditions for decades by studios who treat them like gold bars. The print of Hard Boiled used by Criterion did not appear to be maintained with the same exacting standard.

no blu-ray (or hd-dvd) version has been announced, and last i checked the Weinstein Company (that have the rights) are still hd-dvd exclusive, though i'm sure someone will correct me if that's wrong.

point being, you could be waiting a while for that blu-ray.

I imagine a lot of these were found in the salt mine up in Kansas that was uncovered a while back. There were rows and rows of movies there that had been stored for who knows how long and were in perfect condition.

When I said Blu Ray, I meant PS3. I might rent the Xbox 360 version of Stranglehold to play through with rumble and achievements, but buy the PS3 version to replay and for Hard Boiled.

It's a HK action movie, I don't believe those studios took as much care as American studios to preserve the film.

However, even a bad HD transfer is better than even the best DVD.

Midway forums is the source.

Quote:
Midway has decided to make both the standard version and the North American Collector's Edition (with Hard Boiled on Blu-ray)of Stranglehold region free. Please be clear that the Collector's Edition with the movie is only available in North America, so if you live elsewhere, you'll have to buy it as an import.

I guess the higher ups do listen to you guys on the forums!
