PLAYSTATION Eye priced (well, sort of) #1

This is not new but I thought it deserved its own thread (it was originally mentioned in the latest PlaystationNation Podcast thread and literally 0 people mentioned it).

If it already did have its own thread, I couldn't find it (a.k.a. Sorry if old)

Anyway, the reason I say "sort of" is because you have to buy it bundled with Eye of Judgement the game.

Sounds like a helluva good deal to me!

Other PS3 "games" that use the Playstation Eye as the main input device include:
- Eyedentify (vaporware?)
- Aqua Vita
- Singstar
- Operation Creature Feature
- Trials of Topoq

Other PS3 games that use Playstaion Eye for a secondary input device:
- Burnout Paradise - takes a picture of you two seconds after you takedown someone or are taken down online so the other person involved can see your reaction

Some PLAYSTATION Eye tech article

Judging from its appearance, function outweighs form. The original EyeToy had an industrial yet streamlined look, like one of those battleships at the beginning of The Fifth Element. The all-new Eye, on the other hand, looks like it could be one of the loser droids at the back of the sand crawler's holding pen.

But like I said, this is a feature play.

The Eye has a four-microphone array for multidirectional voice location tracking, enhanced echo canceling and background noise suppression. That means, according to Sony, no headset necessary. <-- OMG!

The USB 2.0 camera can capture up to 120 frames at 320x240 resolution; a still impressive 60 frames in 640x480. It has a digital zoom (or perhaps, digital wide angle) feature that captures either a 56 degree field of view or a 75 degree field of view. And it's designed to work better than its predecessor in low light. Compare all that to the XBox cam's 640 x 480 res at 30 frames per second.

EyeCreate software that comes with lets you take photos, mess with them, and even capture video and audio to save on your PS3's hard drive. The best EyeCreate feature is time-lapse photography: when taking one pic every 15 minutes for 12 hours reveals you in the exact same position with the same blank look on your face, you will have documented proof of how sad your life really is.

Hmm, there will be PSN games using Eye? I'm sort of wary of Eye of Judgement because you need boosters.

- Aqua Vita
- Trials of Topoq
- Creature Feature

All that for the price of a regular game is an excellent deal. I thought it would at least be $100.

PS3 Skype would be great. I wouldn't need to use my computer for video calls to my gf and family.

That's a very good deal. I need follow up on Eye of Judgment, though---since I know nothing about that game.

It's still just a USB camera, so all the basic functionality should work.
The Xbox Live Vision cam works fine on the PC and PS3 also.

Is that really the case? What additional functionalities does it have over some standard issue logitech, other than maybe the microphone?

Eye of judgment undoubtedly has TCG money-grab elements to go with its Yugioh nextgenness.

It reminds me of the FF8 card game and it should be pretty good considering it's from a card game specialist like Wizards of the Coast (I know my want meter went from meh to probably on that note alone). The only thing better would be Upper Deck's VS. team doing this.

At best this will spawn a crap load of expansions or new properties as Hasbro is also on board. At worst it's a waste of 60 bucks and some booster pack money.

If Sony was smart, they'd keep deck costs down for this one, possibly below the cheap VS. decks level of monies. The initial entry to this computerized TCG world has to be cheap or it'll alienate a lot of people. Wizard and co. still has the option to led users to more gouge-heavy entries like Magic at a later date.

It should also work better under low ligth situation than the old Ey Toy and interestingly can capture at 320x240 at 120 fps (I wonder how well the 120 fps functionality is going to work).

Fast movement. For example, if the PS3 needs to reckognise some very quick and "big" movements, like punches, switching to this mode would allow to basically trace your fucking arm in every inch of your room.

I'd like to see a bundle with a different game, but the price is nice.

Is it confirmed that the light sensitivity is much better than the Eyetoy? My normal playing conditions are too dark for the Eyetoy but I know there are much better CCDs available.

Eye of Judgment seems cool, but I've never played a CCG before, and I'm afraid it's going to turn into one of those "awesome if you're really into CCGs!" kinds of games I regret buying so I'm going to hold off for now.

Yep. Also 480p60 capture and 240p120 capture, microphone cluster with noise & feedback canceling and speech recognition/identification technology. Precise and high enough mic quality to use as a headset mic from a few feet away.

Pretty much the fanciest/most advanced "webcam" ever made.

69,99 $ is a steal. Sony Germany lists Eye of Judgement with a suggested retail price of 103 € (= 140 $)...
