So here's the big question I have.. Does the legendary sold at retail have the collectors packaging put inside the helmet like the 1up video, or does it come in a regular dvd case like the gametrailers video? If it's the latter, I'll be getting the legendary on tuesday and putting the helmet on Ebay. I do want those cinematics/commentaries.

Excellent. Now I'll see if my local stores have extra legendary editions.. It seems like they would, due to the price and most stores getting tons.

Man, Gamestop...

I called in to switch my pre-order to the regular edition and they said it was possible, but they said I had to come in and do it. 'Kay, no problem...

Then when I get there to ask for the switch, they claimed that the scratching of the discs contained in the LE was just a rumor. I know for a fact that they know it isn't and they just want the extra ten bucks from me.

I have an idea, say, "Did I ask for any personal input? Put my money on the version I just told you to."

This tends to work when you're a customer at a store.

The scratching of discs in the LE is just a rumor. This is about the CE.

I just was out with my son hitting the games stores, as we're apt to do on Sunday afternoons, and I asked the gal at GameStop if they'd heard anything about Halo 3 disc scratches. She said they'd been told nothing about it, and hadn't bothered to touch what was in the back. She's a regular clerk there and has always been straightforward answering questions (both mine and others I've seen her selling games to), so I believe her.

Just my estimation of the situation:

* There is a problem, but it hasn't filtered up the chain to the corporate level.
* There is a problem, and it has filtered up, but they've not decided what to do and they've got less than a day to deal with it.

Or, more likely:

* There is a problem (we've all seen the 1UP video and snapshots of scratched discs), it's filtered up the chain, and been determined to be minor enough that they'll deal with it as people complain. By next week, this will have all blown over as a few discs are replaced gratis.

It could be minor because it's localized to certain shipments, it affects a smaller fraction of games than we've seen reflected in the posts here, or the scratches really don't affect how well the discs play.

And, for the record, I'm not some Microsoft apologist, just a skeptic. If anything, I'm a Sony person. (My main system has been a PS2 since October 2000 and will soon be a PS3 when it arrives this week...)

I stopped by my EBStop earlier today. The clerks had not heard of the issues, and they said their LE/CE allocation of preorders was maxed out. Fuck!

I'm so fucked. God dammit, MS, why did you have to blow this.

It's good that you call your local Gamestops, but be sure to ask them what happens if you open your game in the store and find a scratched disc inside. Will you get a replacement right there? Can you swap it out for a regular edition's disc?

Find out now, instead of midnight tomorrow.

Those who wanted a calibration disc for $10 instead of $50 =(

By the way, how is that thing for those who already have the CE?

Uh oh. Looks like it affects the Legendary Editions too. Even ones that came with the special press kit.

Video of IGN unboxing it. Loose disc. Scratches. :\

You can see the scratch on the disc at 3:00. More apparent in the hi-res version.

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/821/821913p1.html

Lesson learned: Open your game in the store; ask for a replacement if the disc is damaged.

The legendary edition the press got is not standard. In the retail version the disks come in two normal cases.

that's what I was told. Gamestops should have enough spare copies on hand.

People changing their pre-orders for no reason... It's the guys who ordered it online who are in trouble.

Could the original poster please update the first post?

1) It is limited to the CE (collector's edition, $69.99). It does not effect the Legendary or Normal edition.

2) Press is getting a modified version of the legendary which it does affect.

3) There is some confusion as to how many of the CE units this affects because the artbook rattles when you shake it. It may affect every single unit, or it may be significantly less. No one really seems to know.

I don't like LE cases for the most part, but the content with this LE edition is pretty useful...for $10 more it looks like a real good bargain.

It has some artwork and stuff, which I don't find extremely interesting, but it has an HD documentary on the making of, which I find real interesting (anything regarding game/software development I find interesting), and very useful and practical AV calibration disc.

AVIA's home theatre calibration disc goes for $39 at Amazon.com.

Now, Bungie's AV calibration could be a bit simpler and not as in-depth, but for $10 more, I think it's a good value as it is something very practical.

If Bungie and Microsoft are aware of this, they probably overnight shipped a ton of replacements to the stores. They really can't afford another humiliating QA problem like this.

Since the game isn't even out yet, MS isn't going to respond. If there are widespread problems when the game is released then we'll see some significant pressure on MS.

I doubt that it is anywhere near that simple. They have to find new nimbles for the discs to sit on, manufacture them and then ship those out to the stores.

Could the really have a fix (or a new case) done in time? I'm skeptical, but I have no background or knowledge in this area.

If that is the case though, MS should thank the guys who broke the street date. :P

I know it's a different case because it's a smaller number and playability isn't affected but I still wonder if Microsoft and/or Bungie will show the same class as the Bioshock guys did when they learned of some broken Big Daddy figurines in the Limited Editions (prompt reaction, replacement statue and an art book to apologize).

To clarify:

I don't mean to say that they have entire replacement LE packages going out. Just fresh game discs without packaging.

They're bound to be aware of this problem. That's probably the best solution at this point.

Has anyone ever pre-ordered a game at Best Buy? What's their policy on moving your $5 to a different game/getting a refund on the $5?

At this point I'd like to just say fuck it and buy the regular edition. Though I guess at worst I can just do that and lose my $5 deposit.

Ask them what happens if you open your game and find it scratched. They're supposed to give you a replacement copy. Remember to open it in the store.

For those saying that it would be easy to swap out for another copy, during my GameStop visit earlier today (see previous post above) the gal behind the counter said they were almost pre-sold out of every copy they had been shipped. That doesn't count people who might just show up on a lark to pick it up.

I still think there's a good chance this will be a non-issue, with some trouble with a few shipments of badly damaged discs. We'll see. Should be fun to watch either way it turns out.
