Got mine at E.B. Games this morning. The salesman knew of the problem, as was kind enough to go through several discs. Shaking each one till he found one that didn't shake loose. He then checked inside to make sure the disks were still not loose. I walked away with a mint copy. Very happy.
Expect retailers to be returning a lot of copies. This could really hurt MS. |

So part 2 of my story.
I went during lunch to exchange my copy. I don't know what was more mind boggling. The fact that just about every copy the guy picked up you could clearly hear the disc rattling around in the case, or the fact that he shook it hard to prove to me that they were all fucked and then dropped them back in the drawer. I probably had a look of horror on my face because I knew the way he was handling them was reducing my chances of finding any good set. I pleaded with him to stop doing that because it's not helping finding a good set, and finally he was lightly moving them but you could still hear it. Eventually we found one that had minimal noise and opened it up. The game disc was good, but the extras disc was bad. Then I asked him to open another. Before he got to opening it, the lady associate said "I'm not going to have him open any more" to which I responded, "I don't want to leave with another busted set. You should complain to Microsoft about this stupid fiasco" She apparrently had heard about this from a couple other people earlier and new the situation and responded with "I've heard about it and we expect there to be a recall or something". Fortunately the guy had finally opened the second copy up and one disc was loose while the other was in place. Fortunately this time it was the extras disc that was in place and the game disc was loose. So I asked them to make one good complete set so I could be on my way. What was irritating was to see him juggle the discs around and I don't even know if I got the best of each of the discs. I think they look ok but I haven't done a closer inspection. Ugh, what a nightmare. I don't want to boot this up at work in fear of not being able to put it down, but man what a cluster fuck this whole experience has been. |

Just picked up my copy from Gamestop. Both cds were not secured in the spindle when I opened it(in front of them) but both were fine. There was a very slight trace of a ring around the inside, nothing worth complaining about. I've had games with much more scratches work just fine. Went home and tried both disks, worked fine. The guy there said they had 3 or 4 returns so far.
Just because you see your disk is not secured doesn't mean it's scratched. As all of us know, games can be without a package for years without getting scratched.... anyway HALO 3 LATER TODAY!!! |

So I went out on lunch to grab my L.E., wary with all the problems I've been reading about. I open it up, see that both discs are intact, and think "Great! I'm one of the lucky ones!" I get back to work, pop out the disc to show a friend that they're not all fucked up, and guess what? My fucking game disc is scratched! Yes, despite not coming loose in shipping, somehow my game disc has quite a few nasty looking scratches on it, one right on the edge that really looks like it'll stop the game from working. Hopefully it will play, if not I will have to pray that my Gamestop will just swap me a regular edition disc.
Oh, and the tin case is a POS too. I took it out, slid it like 3 inches across the desk, and it's all scratched up now. Thanks for a quality L.E., Microsoft! |

I just said fuck it and bought a Regular edition....I'm just gonna send my CE right back to familyvideo as soon as I get it in the mail....
When I was picking it up from my local GS, I just casually asked about it and the lady indeed say they had "quite a few" that were loose in the tin ....this is catastrophic |

My limited edition came today, everything is fine. It wasn't securely in the groove like the game disc was, in fact it was barely in the case. But there wasn't a scratch on it. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. Worried me because when I got it I heard a ton of rattling.

Bought the Limited Edition. I opened it on the way home from the store. It had a HUGE scratch. So I brought it back. The guy in front of me had the same issues, and was currently on his 4th looking for one that wasn't scratched.
So I decided to just upgrade to the Cat Helmet. But, yes, this is seriously large problem, wtf was Microsoft thinking? |

I went through about 6 Halo 3 LEs with a Target employee before we said fuck it and just put a non-scratched Game Disc with a non-scratched Essentials disc and called it a day :lol
Great job Microsoft! |

I posted this in the official thread but it got lost as last post on the page and it might fit better here.
Just got back from midnight launch. Approx. 15 people in the store (Europe :lol ). My store was fully aware of the disk problem, even though I was the first one to buy a copy so that was good. The clerk was really cool about it. He said I could keep checking copies until I got one that was ok. My first one had a loose game disk which had minor scratches. Second one was ok, 2 disks in place, yay for me. Still, this whole scratch thing is a fuck up totalement. 2 other guys were busy opening their CE's at the counter, plastic wraps everywhere.

This whole ordeal really pisses me off. I went into gamestop last night and they were pretty much rushing through people. I shook the first box they gave me and asked for a second one. It shook too and the clerk told me all the ones he has touched shook and basically blew me off. Today I call back about an exchange and they tell me they are ou tof LE's but will swap the disk by itself for a regular edition. I guess thats not terrible, but being a collector it bothers me for some reason. I instead ask if I can just return it for a refund to which I am told no I can only exchange it for the exact same thing. Since they dont have it they would happily exchange it for a regular edition and return the difference. Gotta love gamestop's return policy logic. I might go to BB or Walmart and see if I can find any LEs that are shake free and just return my LE to gamestop for the regular... Then I will have an extra regular... we'll see. The whole situation is really bothersome.

Since none of the gamestop in my area let me pick up LE without preorder, I went to Bestbuy to test my luck. The first couple that the clerk shook didn't rattle, and I just picked the second one that sounded more solid. Came home, and found out that the discs are in perfect shape, but the black tin can was pretty badly scratched. I guess, something's gotta give... The manual was a little folded too. I have never been impressed with the 360 related products' manufacturing quality; My Bioshock manual had some cuts, and a couple other games came with damaged cases.
I don't really care about the whole thing, but fact that we're talking about $400 hardware with name "pro" and "elite" attached makes me really wonder where the extra money that we are forced to pay are going to. I'm pretty sure that cheap LE tin case costs no more than a buck to manufacture. BTW the nub at the center that's supposed to hold the disc is actually holding the disc pretty tight, and I had to yank the disc out... So, I don't get how the loose disc problem happened. |

My disc is scratched but it works fine so far. I'm afraid of one of the later campaign levels bugging out or my 360 drive wearing out quicker since it'll have to work harder to read the disc. Maybe I'm just paranoid.
And does anyone know if the regular edition game disc is the same as the limited edition game disc? I imagine the disc art is different, but will me LE calibration stuff still work with a RE disc? |

Oh man. Just got back from a Game Crazy. (Redmond Bella Botega)
Their regular versions... are MISSING discs. NO discs inside. They had a stack of 5, and after people were coming in, they were checking them before they walked out the door. Another 11 turned up empty. Seriously sucky. |

I got mine through the video store I work at. Not only were both discs scratched (cleaned em on the resurface machine), but the freaking tin was dented!
The dents are probably UPS'sss fault tough. I didn't get too pissed since I did get a ten dollar discount on the thing (came out to sixty dollars). Who are the ad wizards that came up with that!? edit: I was close to switching it with a regular edition one...but eh.. the machine cleaned it pretty good. |

I went to my EBGames this afternoon to pick up my reserved LE and promptly asked him if I could open it up and return it on the spot. He told me the clerks already opened and looked through all the boxes and put together the "not so bad ones that haven't been scuffed up too much." What a sales pitch...I promptly downgraded my order to the regular edition.

my ce showed up from gamestop.com -- discs are rattling around audibly. i can't get through to the gamestop.com support line, and i've had problems getting refunds from those assholes in the past, so i figure i'll return it at the local store. i call them up and they say i'm good. but when i get down there the manager has left, the two remaining employees don't know how to handle it, and they take nearly half an hour to reach this conclusion. half an hour i could've spent ACTUALLY PLAYING HALO. i have to go back in tomorrow. thank fuck i picked up the regular edition last night, or i'd be really irritated right now. i'm kind of irritated as is.
bonus: one of the gamestop clerks said she 'didn't know how to put it back in inventory,' and when i asked if they just planned to sell it to some other sap, she said they did -- 'most of them work anyway.' guess who's going to be first against the wall when the revolution comes |
