New 360 motherboard revision in the works for next year (JASPER) #1

They don't stop do they? as long it's cheaper to make then I guess it doesn't matter :(

Quote:
Jasper is the code name for the next motherboard for the Xbox 360. It will becoming next August, in time for next year’s holiday season. Jasper is going to have a 65-nanometer graphics chip from ATI Technologies, as well as smaller memory chips. That isn’t much information, but it’s enough to tell us about their cost-reduction plan. If you ask me, it’s a bit of a slow pace.

Quote:
As readers of this blog know, Falcon is being used in Xbox 360s that are currently rolling off the production lines. It has a 65-nm IBM microprocessor on it, instead of the previous 90-nm version. It also has built-in HDMI. It carries lower costs than the previous motherboard, but not dramatically so. And Falcon has a 90-nm graphics chip on it.

Quote:
Here’s something that Xbox 360 buyers will want to know. Both Falcon and its predecessor Zephyr (used in the Xbox 360 Elite) have different thermal solutions than the original Xbox 360. You’ve seen the heat sinks in the cut-out photos posted elsewhere. The Microsoft engineers believe those heat sinks will be sufficient as a solution for keeping Xbox 360s from overheating. From their point of view, you don’t have to wait until Jasper to get a reliable machine.

Board revisions shouldn't really concern the consumer...but this is the 360 . If you haven't bought it yet, get it now and deal with an RRoD.

I'll buy a 360 as soon as a model comes out that doesn't red ring.

Why is this important? The console makers make internal changes all the time. Sounds like this is just a cost cutting change, not one that will affect consumers.

Also, that blog writer needs to learn grammer (it should be "be coming", not "becoming").

grammar

It's a sign of a price drop. If they don't cut the price when this new motherboard is introduced, you can bash them as you want.

Since always....every time Sony released a new revision of the PS2 we sure as hell heard about it because it usually broke existing mod chips.

I guess no Xbox 360 for me until August 2008 then. That's fine with me though, that way Xbox 360's already established library of great games will grow even bigger.

It's wonderful how we get this info from Dean. It's good to know that another revision is on the way, but a year off is a long time. I'm looking forward to hearing how reliable the falcons actually turn out to be.

August of next year? ATI really has completely lost their shine. That's ridiculous it takes that long to get to 65nm.

Just ATI now??? Graphics chips are the SLOWEST to take advantage of process. It is just harder in general for them. Let me just ask you... have you heard anything about the PS3 GPU at 65nm yet?

It's weird, ATI has been using 65nm chips in their regular video cards for months now. They are also releasing cards with 55nm chips next month. Yet the 360 GPU is still on 90nm.

LMAO! They "believe" that it'll be "sufficient"?!

These are the same guys that couldn't properly cool the Xbox for the last 2 years, right? Yeah, I'll take their word for it...

Isn't the GPU already at 65 nm for the 40 gig version.

After all, the damn thing uses 100 less watts than the original.

Xbox 360 GPU to go to 65nm in fall, TSMC to see side benefits, says paper

Commercial Times, April 30; Esther Lam, DIGITIMES [Monday 30 April 2007]

Sources at equipment makers were cited by a Chinese-language Commercial Times report as saying that the Xbox 360 will be equipped with a 65nm-made Xenos graphics processing unit (GPU) in the fall and that corresponding foundry partner Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) will see benefits.

The paper cited the sources as saying that an engineering version of the 65nm-made Xenos has been sent out and production will start in May. TSMC projected sales contribution from 65nm would amount to 5% during mid-2007.

On a separate note, TSMC announced the introduction of 65nm-made embedded DRAM in March. Embedded DRAM is one of the two dies that comprise the Xenos. In the 90nm version of the Xenos, embedded DRAM is manufactured by NEC.

It's funny to see some people not get that the CPU is already at 65nm. Also, the ATI GPU is a little more complex than your average GPU.

I think the holdup is the edram going to 65nm not the actual gpu.

To be honest I haven't read about any that have red ringed with the added heatsink. All consoles have the added heatsink after June 1st 2007.

If you don't have a 360 by now you should just wait for a big price drop with the announcement of the Xbox 720.

I'm actually thinking of building a gaming PC next year instead. GoW, Bioshock, and GTA4 are the only 3 X360 games that I really want to play, and all 3 of them I should be able to play on a suitably equipped PC.
