Damn... Advance Wars DS 2 is serious business #1

Brief background: I run an Advance Wars website as a hobby, and its more-or-less the home for the hardcore AW community. Whenever a new game is announced I'm amazed at how much real info they can glean from blurry videos and a couple pics.

It's no exception this time around. Here's the AWDS2 discussion board, where everyone is sorting through what is known about the game:

http://www.advancewarsnet.com/forums...p?showforum=33

Some notes about the (very) dark plot have been revealed, and they're the reason I'm making this thread:

Translated pretty roughly:

""huge meteors had struck the earth
heat had burnt the world
earthquake had smashed the world
tsunami had swallowed the world

90% of mankind have died. "

Other things members have translated:

-near the Laboratory-

Rin saying:we're in trouble at living with a bit food, and moreover, unknown diseases are there...

Ed: No one is here too ... have everyone died? everyone...

...yeah. Apparently IntSys learned their lesson with the previous three Advance Wars games, where the COs were 11 years old and were basically playing war with each other, presumably killing thousands of troops in the process. "Wow! That was a fun battle. We should do it again sometime!" This time IntSys went in the opposite direction, killing "90% of mankind," ha.

The biggest news with this title is that they're finally compensating for the screen gap.

But disease and natural disasters will do.

AWNet? I think I was a member there once...

Anyway, it was known to be 'post-apocalyptic' almost from the get-go, so this fits the bill.

I wonder if the Old Guard will make an appearance in any form.

If anyone's interested, based on the brief french video, we know the following units, as well:

Infantry
Bazooka
Motorbike (new)
Recon
APC
Anti-Air
Tank
Md. Tank
Mega-Tank

Artillery
Defender Cannon (aka. "super artillery") (new)
Rockets
Missiles

Edit:

I don't see how they could. Andy, Sami etc. just wouldn't fit, unless they darkened them up as well. But then they wouldn't be the same people. Might as well go with an all new cast.

So, wait. 90% of the world has been wiped out by natural disasters, yet people are still having wars. And they still have bases to produce units.

Weird.

They key to repopulating the world, what else?

That aside, I would assume that fighting over the remaining scraps of resources would cause wars to be more intense than ever before.

Weird.
There's currently ~6,700,000,000 people on Earth. The Advance Wars world seems to have more futuristic technology, so we can say around 7,000,000,000-9,000,000,000 people or so.

That's still 700-900 million people left on Earth, which is around how many humans were on Earth during the years 1700-1800. It's not like people had trouble having wars or building bases before then.

It's not the population that makes me question.

It's where they're getting the ability to build their Megatanks and Battleships and such, and pull off large-scale 70-day battles, when presumably loads of resources were destroyed by meteors, buried underground by earthquakes, buried underground and under water by tsunamis, etc.

By spending 7000 gold to get the resources. Seriously, get with the program.

Also, since I'm pretty certain that none of you actually visited the site (and for me, going back was a pretty nice trip down nostalgia lane. I might have to re-favourite the site), I'll just bring some of the site to you:

See this pic here? See the laser cannon? The standard BH stuff we've seen since AW2, one might assume.

Look closer. There's a cursor above the 'laser', indicating that it's currently the player's turn. And the laser is firing anyway. It's probably a ray that'll damage any troops that pass through, or an outright impassable barrier and you'll need to destroy one of the two 'nodes' before it deactivates. New stuff ahoy!

Yeah, we noticed the active cursor on the AWN forums yesterday :p

You're right - it means the laser isn't "firing" - its an obstacle - like a wall. And presumably destroying the source will let you pass through.

There have been pretty dark themes in AW before, right?

Didn't Lash wipe out Olaf's hometown in AW:2 so she could test out her new weapons? I think that's why their affinity in AW:DS is only 80%.

Granted, like the OP said, she was loling the whole time...

I don't care for the storyline all that much either way. I do like the new artstyle and the map, nice, clean and functional. I just know I will sink too much time into this one.

Dude, they lived on Wars World! If you're born on Wars World into a family of limited means, I think you just have to accept the fact that before you reach marrying age you're going to be sacrificed in combat due to the whims, or the incompetence, of your preadolescent CO. Such is the tragedy of hereditary rule.

I mentioned this in one of the other AW threads. I dont care if the old cast returns, just as long as some of the better COs return in some form or another. How am I supposed to win without Haichi?! How?! Ahem, I think we may either see the characters included as unlockables outside the story mode or just see replacements for some like with Koal and Jugger.

Anyways, I am looking forward to this game and playing it online against actual people for once should be refreshing.

I think one of the most charming aspects of AW was its lighthearted style, this sense of fake toy war. I don't really dislike this new setting, but the older one was one of the unique marks of identity of the series, and it's sad to see it go... :(

Likewise; I'll probably just be mostly ignoring the story and characters this time around. The number of high-quality lighthearted game series in the industry is very low, so seeing one more disappear is a bit melancholic even though the gameplay will be as fantastic as it always was. Kind of like if Dragon Quest and Mario went mature or something. (Though I suspect that some would actually enjoy those things happening, for some reason.)

Anyway, day one buy regardless.

I'm with you, actually. I really liked the color palette and spritework in AW1 and AW2.

I'll be picking up Days of Ruin Day 1 regardless (duh), but the style doesn't really appeal to me as much.

Conversely, I'm going to appreciate not being constantly exposed to the intense cognitive dissonance of happy-go-lucky adolescents constantly and for no reason sending thousands of innocent soldiers to their gruesome deaths.
