Ok, basically its the same game with very subtle differences. Luigi controls a little differently to Mario. He's faster and jumps higher, but he's also more 'slippery'. Some say this adds a bit more challenge, more specifically to levels that require careful precise movements. There's also a few humorous moments in the game in which Luigi talks to himself. Oh, and you also unlock two more hidden stars (one for Mario and one for Luigi), though keep in mind these stars are nothing special. But only that way can you get 100% completion (242 stars).

So yeah, I think it's worth playing through the game again. But not really for the extras - more so for the fact that Galaxy is just so fricken good.

I still think, all in all, that this is also the best looking game of the generation so far - I don't give a shit about the tech. It's just supremely beautiful. MGS4 would be a close second.

Oh...best soundtrack, too.

It's pretty much just the best alla round game made this generation, let's put it at that.

That development team is something else–I can't wait to see what they're up to.

I didn't think it was bad form to bump this thread since the last post was made just a couple of days ago.

I've beaten the game and have around 75 stars iirc. So now I'm going back trying to get the remaining stars (thank you to the posters who advised against getting every star in every galaxy before beating the game, as I can now mix things up a bit). I've completed a few of the purple coin challenges, but what I want to know is this: do I have to talk to that Luma and pay 20 star bits every time I want to access a purple coin star level? Every time I pay him, he moves the purple comets and it shows me a map of where they are (there are usually 3-4 of them on the map in various observatories). However, when I go to one of the galaxies and complete a purple coin challenge, and then go to the other observatories, there are no purple coin challenges available.

If I have to speak to this dude and go through this whole rigmarole every time I want to access a PC stage, then that would be a huge bummer. Tremendous game, though. I prefer the more open-ended levels of SM64 myself, but the control, level design, and sheer amount of creativity in this game (to say nothing of the audio-visual quality) is amazing.

I do hope that they can provide some more larger levels like those Honey Bee stages in the next iteration, though, along with opening up the structure a bit (e.g., by not completely redesigning levels for each star quest so we can obtain any of a number of stars on each play through).

You can either pay him or complete any stage (even ones you've already finished before).

On the other hand, I hope the next 3d Mario completely dumps recycling any part of a level's structure, unlike Galaxy, which always reused the first few planets. Each level should have only one or two stars and it should be only thematically similar with other levels in the same area. "Freedom" in a Mario game just means running through the same place many times.

That sucks. Are you serious? Wow. It's a pain in the ass to go from, say, a PC challenge in a galaxy in the Kitchen all the way back to pay the Luma, listen to his spiel, and then go back to another observatory. I'm flabbergasted that that's what you have to do. Beating a level just to get new PC challenges is even more tedious.

Hey, whatever works best for you. It's just that I can imagine that doing ONLY the PC challenges could have gotten tedious. I didn't even get all of the regular stars prior to beating the game, much less the daredevil/mario race stars.

I'm still in shock that I have to talk to that Luma every time I want to do a PC challenge. Terrible.

Maybe their review was based on an older preview copy when it was still running at 60? Remember, they didn't cut it back to 30 until the last second for some reason. That was really the only disappointing thing about Sunshine.

This game and MP3 are an order of magnitude better looking than anything else on Wii.

Let's not let our sad realization re: the motion capabilities of the Wiimote cloud our judgement as to what we should expect graphically from the Wii: developers just aren't tryin.

The only possible criticism I could come up with is the storybook sections (depressing and weird), but they're also completely optional.

Galaxy is as close to perfect as a game could be.

After all this time I have to ask about the ending.

I beat both Mario and Luigi Modes with 242 stars and after the first 121 stars the ending is supposedly altered and Rosalina says that even though things stay the same, they will play out a little differently. Was she just talking about being able to play as Luigi or did they establish something new about Mario canon?

Also, what was the planet with the 5 mushrooms and the Green star?

@ The jump compilation

Great video! My favorite jump was from one of the Bowser stage where the gravity changes like 5 times with the L-pieces and Mario passes them in one jump.

Yeah that was awesome, but the moving platform at the of the video wasn't bad either where Mario gets a few coins and avoids three laser barriers in one jump.

Well at the weekend I holed myself in for 4 hours and finally got round to collecting all 242 stars. It was the first time in a long time where I didn't feel guilty or that I had wasted my time by playing a game, looks like Mario still has the power to do that for me after all these years; it reminds me of the importance of play.

This game is delicious gaming crack sent from the heavens to quench our thirst and remind us that all does not need to be brown and realistic to be fun. In short, it's tied for me with Super Mario Bros. 3 (ironic) for Game Of The Forever. Seriously, nothing comes close to it. (Until Super Mario Universe & Yoshi's Star: Super Mario Universe 2 of course. )

Love the jump videos, Tab! Shows how creative you can get with the jump and spin moves. I smiled when I saw this thread bumped, too. Always reminds me of how awesome and immersive this game is. On the whole did it skew easy? Sure, but it wasn't without some nicely challenging stages, and the sheer variety this game throws at you just continues to be the standard.

A (non-gamer, essentially) friend of mine recently bought a Wii on a whim, for his wife and him to play Wii Sports and Wii Play. I told him he needed to look into some real games since he now owned the system, so I brought over Mario Galaxy and showed him a variety of levels.

He yawned the entire time and rarely made a comment as I played, then at the end he said it looked "pretty cool". I was a bit disappointed, was it too much awesome for him to comprehend? Should I have worked my way up with some other crap real games before showing him Galaxy? Did I expect way too much for this game to wow him even a little? He had a NES way back so he's familiar with Mario games.

He really likes Wii Play, btw.

Since the thread got bumped might as well chime in and say I'm about 20 stars away from 242. I pick up and play whenever I feel like it. Still the greatest 3D platformer I've ever played.

Also a bitter, bitter reminder of what Wii games should be like.

If he has a defined taste in games (even a non-gamer might have a favored perception of gaming) then I don't think even a perfect game like Galaxy could change that.

Also, you suggested that he wasn't playing. A person's impression of a game might go down if the person isn't engaged.

I don't really think he's played enough games to have a defined taste, to be honest. Edit-I just re-read your post, I see what you mean. You may be right.

He did try the game for a little while after I played, and did pretty badly at it, no surprise since it was his first time to play. That was after he made his comments and after watching me play all those levels though. I don't blame him at all for not being good at it as little as he has played "real" games, but I was honestly surprised at his overall lack of interest. I just thought it would be a game that would pique anyone's interest with all the upside-down flipping around and really colorful graphics. Not to mention the awesome music.

You should have introduced him to Mario Kart Wii before Galaxy. Try doing that and see if after that he wants it.
