Play the demo, thats basically the depth of the gameplay, you just get more abilities, and the rules behind the battles change (you start with your time running per move you do, you later evolve to time runs and you have to throw in as many moves as you can in that time, to the eventual you can only use your super powers a certain amount of time per battle) but then again, i cant give you COMPLETE impressions on the game, cause my 360 is dead, i wasnt able to beat it. huzzah. |

art direction notwithstanding, I would look into this game, if impressions from other people on the combat sounded more interesting. Other than that, its very pretty, for what they're trying to achieve.
I mean, at least it looks better than "Beautiful" Katamari. |

The extra dungeon near the end adds something to the combat but it's really more annoying then fun. The story is fine until it reaches the climax, and then it completely falls apart - it's a problem most JRPGs seem to have. The dialog seems to never get to the point and ends up constantly adding unnecessary text into the equation. It has the Xenosaga syndrome of cut scenes that're often way too long, but at least Xenosaga's cutscenes served some sort of a purpose in advancing the story, in ES most of the cutscenes end up being fluff. The voice acting is fairly meh too, also I wasn't really expecting a Grade A job on it. Although the game does look stunning and is always a pleasure to look at, that's one, if not the only thing they got right. I dunno, maybe I'm jaded because I went through the entire Half-Life 2 saga right after, but if I could go back I wouldn't have wasted 25-30ish hours with Eternal Sonata. |

Sad thing is, the length of the game really should be an issue - at a measly 23 or so hours, (even granting the game a hugely padded out filler optional dungeon and multiple backtracking instances), this puppy is SHORT. But honestly, the gameplay system is so simple and flimsy that it can't even hold itself together for that long. By the end of those 23 hours, you'll be thanking your lucky stars it's over. I ain't kiddin - you've got about 13 enemies in the entire game (yes you read that right), and a handful of similar characters that throw out the same annoyingly boring special attack sequences at the end of every single turn to beat them with. Rinse, wash, and repeat until vomit ensues. This is RPG battle repetition at its absolute worst. It's the same. damn. fight. At least the dungeon design is bloody awful, long, repetitive, and dull. Oh wait, no that doesn't help. And the story. Well...the story does start out to be somewhat promising....in an awkward, derivative JRPG delivered kind of way...but everything just blows apart into a mess of incoherent drivel that doesn't even make sense by the end, and you're left with absolutely nothing to hold this sinking ship together besides your own cold will and determination to finish it. The game does have its moments scattered here and there - beautiful graphics, tragic characters, decent, if forgettable scenes - but really, it's just not enough to make it worth playing through the terrible, repetitive gameplay that bookends them out twenty to one. I could go on about how half the characters hold their arms out like a fucking airplane all the time or some of the other trivial shit that's wrong with this clunker, but at the end of the day - the problem is that it's just not any fun to play. Two extra characters aren't going to make a fig of difference. Do yourself a favor and at least go for the rental if you're going to avoid the heed. Buying this game at full price was the single worst decision I made on games all year long.... If you're hurting for a RPG on PS3, Enchanted Arms may only be "solid but not spectacular," but that's all it takes to beat out this bad boy by a good green country mile. |

Seriously, take Hunahan's advice and play Enchanted Arms instead. It's not all that great either, but I certainly had more fun with it then I did with Eternal Sonata. |

If i'm making an RPG, i'll be sure to make a sarcastic, innuendo, cliché character named Wario 64. Gotta love his character.
but to be on topic...when is this game coming out in Europe? i need a JRPG for my PS3 enchanted arms was just horrible EDIT: After reading Hunahan's short review, i'm still going to give it a chance. Last edited by the_id : 11-06-2007 at 07:31 AM. |

Unfortunately those two factors don't make up for the mind-numbing repetition, boring gameplay, and nonsensical story. |
