Oneechanbara games pretty much suck, but get closer and closer to being decent with each new game. This looks pretty decent for a Wii game and got some favorable impressions previously, but I don't trust it...I played the 360 version and I don't want to be burned again.

the PS2 version I played was complete ass. the enemies never attacked. most monotonous game I've ever played.
EDF to Wii is the next step. :o
If they ever localize it, they should title it "Hot Chicks Killing Zombies with Samurai Swords"Originally Posted by Lyte Edge

I am completely serious.
I read it was WAGGLE control, which really, really scares me.Originally Posted by donkey show

This type of game already has good representation on Wii in the forms of No More Heroes and Sengoku Basara 2/Heroes. Speaking of which, I recently repurchased Basara 2 Heroes on Wii even though I have the PS2 version. I just like the game that much.
So, brief initial thoughts:
-It's in 480p. This surprised me, I expected ugly 480i.
-The visuals are better than the PS2 version, but the game is incredibly jaggy on my TV. The image quality could be a lot better.
-Frame rate isn't incredibly smooth, but it doesn't affect the game play at all. (So far)
-Blood is purple, with some other color choices, but red is not available. I guess this is how the game got a D rating instead of the usual Z. Gore is all there, though, cutting body parts up and in half. It's interesting that D3 was able to do this just fine, yet Capcom's Biohazard games get censored.
-The game play isn't anywhere near as bad as I thought it was going to be. You do waggle to attack, but you can do it lightly, and the combo system seems to be time based, so just flailing your arms like in Soul Calibur Legends doesn't do too much beyond the basic combo.
-The music is better than the past Oneechanbara games that I've played. It's not stellar by any means and I doubt I'll ever listen to the soundtrack CD it came with, but it's a lot more tolerable than before.
-Load times are relatively quick, unlock the 360 version.
This is already a better game than the 360 version in my eyes. The uglier graphics are the only thing worse than the 360 version to me right now, IMO.
Now to play some more and see if this feels closer to a real game instead of an overpriced Simple 2000 release. :P
More impressions when you have them please, I might pick this up... and for some reason, I'm teetering on the edge of buying Family Ski too.Originally Posted by Lyte Edge

Using the nunchuck's C button lets you draw a second sword and change up your combos. You have to use both the Wiimote and the Nunchuck with two swords. Holding down the Z button (lock on) and up or down on the analog stick also does different attacks.
One can only hope...
Famitsu gave it 7,7,6,6

Funky massacre:lol!
Ah, this sounds like my kind of game. Now, all I want to know is does it feel satisfying using the waggle to finish off the enemies? NMH pulled it off perfectly IMO. If it gives any similar feeling, then call me an owner.Originally Posted by Lyte Edge

I would certainly not buy a Japanese Wii to play an Oneechanbara game. O_oOriginally Posted by EDarkness
I'll be picking this up either today or tomorrow. Trying to hold back on the finances since I just purchased three games in a row last week. But I was holding off buying a Japanese Wii until this came out. The timing is a little annoying so I couldn't get it day one, but it will be mine tomorrow. I'll post some impressions also.
Thank god I ignored it.
I really do want to pick it up just for the ridiculousness, but then again it's like what ¥5k?
Oh, it has 2P split screen play too. I don't remember if the other games had that.
Heh, heh. Normally I'd agree with you. However, I had a crapload of points saved up at Bic Camera, so I just used that. Total cost of purchase 13,000 yen which includes the game. Not too bad. On top of that, my wife wants to play Chocobo Dungeon, so we'll get that at some point, too.Originally Posted by Lyte Edge

Will be trying it out in a few minutes. Need to find a way to hook up two Wiis without too many wires all over the place.
Is this co-op on the main story or is there a separate multiplayer mode?Originally Posted by Lyte Edge

Unfortunately I have been playing No More Heroes so much I've gotten spoiled. I want all Wii sword games to control like that now.
That's a good point. NMH really set the standard there, it's just so freaking easy and satisfying. Going to another hack-and-slash sword game without those satisfying finishes would be tough, but maybe constant waggle would suffice. I'm glad to see you've been having fun with it despite your time with NMH.Originally Posted by Vinnk
I'm actually having a lot of fun with the game. The framerate is pretty good, there are lots of enemies to dismember and the sword controls work better than SCL.

I'll tell ya, I'd love to see a sword-based game take another stab at the Red Steel sword controls. Polish it up a bit, refine the gesture recognition, and it'd be about as close to 1:1 as we'll probably get in an interactive sword experience on Wii.
I have Oneechanbara 2 on PS2, it was nice (considering the budget price), but i really didn't like save system, i got bored inside the big dungeon (maybe lvl.4 ?), too wide and a lot of time needed to be completed, i'd preferred some savepoints instead of a single save at begining of the stage.Originally Posted by Lyte Edge
Yeah, it's 5000 yen. I don't want to come off like I'm totally hyping this game up, because it *is* Oneechanbara, but it is the best one overall. Does that mean much? I need to play more to answer that.
Reading your opinion really made me wishing this game, but i need to know if save system has been changed...
Make no mistake, this game is a button masher at it's core. It's about taking out waves and waves of enemies in the coolest and fastest way possible. There's no way it's the best game in the world, but it's fun and it doesn't try to do too much. And for those who enjoy moments of just tearing through enemies with crazy amounts of blood and body parts flying all over the place, then you'll enjoy yourself with this game. The enemies are varied to a degree, and at later stages have different methods of attack. I'm starting to hate the machine gun guys as well as the little things that jump around on the screen. The boss fights are cool, though, and relatively short...unlike No More Heroes where a boss fight can last a while.
Someone asked about saving and it seems you can save at checkpoints in the middle of a stage as well as at the end.
The one real disappointment I have is that there aren't any cool cut-scenes like the 360 version. This bummed my roommate since he was wanting the obligatory shower scene. Instead, the story is told through scrolling text with Aya narrating. There isn't even an opening cut-scene from what I can tell. <sigh> Makes it hard to enjoy the story portion of the game.
At this point, I'm happy with my purchase. I'm looking forward to unlocking more things especially alternate costumes. It's not great, but it's not bad either. :)
EDIT: When I purchased the game, it came with a free music CD. I haven't listened to it yet, but was surprise when the lady at the store put it in the bag.
I just watched the VorteX movies on youtube and wow such utter cheese. :lol
Also, get Sandlot cracking on EDF-R...

thx EDarkness for your reply about saves :)
And not in a good way.
The game is fun and there is a lot more variety than previous games in the series but the constant swinging made me have to stop.

The game has been balanced for compliance in Japan. The mere thing is that the graphics are now in higher resolution in comparison to the Japanese version so we were able to implement and present something that is more visually appealing.
The entire game is using the same voices in the original, however so that US gamers can get the full experience, we have included English subtitles to follow along.
Onechanbara is a budget title in the US and will not be a full price game when it hits store shelves early next year.
