Working on a GameTrailers link.

Looks kinda fun so far. Looks like fans of the old TG-16 shooters will have a blast. Waggle is limited, and it looks like it's confined to some strange tilt mechanics.

i've got an amazon preorder for this that keeps being delayed -- hope it doesn't slip off the charts altogether. i don't expect much from it, but somehow i've gotten into the practice of buying every 2d shooter, promising or no

which reminds me, nanostray 2 must be out by now

edit: no, 3/11 for nanostray 2

On the principle that it's a 2D shooter, I really wanted this--until I actually saw it in action to see how slow it was. :( Now I don't think I could possibly justify the purchase, considering how many more 2D shooters I could get on VC for the same price... I mean, yeah, I already have nine of them on VC, so I'd be scraping the lower end of the barrel, but still.

Edit: Wait, just watched the trailer and it looks faster than the last time I saw it. Maybe this is one of those games where speed gets better as you go farther, I don't know. Back on my consideration list it goes, anyway!

it came out in japan a while ago, under some lengthy japanese title i can't remember. afaik it's still scheduled for us release as 'heavenly guardian' -- don't know its release date, but the ps2 version is supposed to come out at the end of this month

ok. thanks. So at least we have a Us title. Sucks that they changes all the damn sprites. I hope the game retains the classic feel.

consider me there. Yeah, it looks slightly dodgy, but it also looks like a sprite based, 2D shooter, which means I'm gonna buy the damn thing and enjoy it. Same with Target Terror. 2D and light gun shooters are my buy-regardless-of-anything-else genres and so far that policy has treated me well.

Hm so the trailer says February, IGN says March 31st (clearly this was translated from "Q1 '08") and Amazon says April 15th. Sounds like somebody's vying with SNK Playmore for the "SURPRISE! IT'S OUT!" Championship.

Whenever it comes out, I'm interested. I have the same philosophy as a lot of you guys when it comes to shooters... buy now, ask questions later / never.

edit: whoops! I thought we were talking about Monkey King.

Kiki Kai World came out on the Wii in Japan as Yukinko Daisenpuu.

edit again! for more info: UFO Interactive has a page for the US PS2 release of Heavenly Guardian, but nothing about the Wii version. So it looks like it might end up Wii-only in Japan and PS2-only in the US.

IIRC this game got trashed by the Japanese reviewers. Still, I have fond memories of the Master System version so it might score nostalgia points with some.

Yukinko Daisenpuu is a really nice game, old school style, multi scrolling action as Kikikaikai, hi-res graphic, 2 players cooperative.
Played yesterday with a friend for the first time and it was damned good.
If it's realeased in US don't miss it.
The only bad thing is you must play with both remote and nunchuck, no Classic Controller or Hori Fighting Stick support...

Monkey King (Shin Chuuka Taisen in Japan) is not as good as Yukinko, horizontal shooter with gameplay similar to Gradius (power-ups will be lost when you die), the only nice feature is you can speed up/down the scrolling by moving the remote to left (speed down) or right (speed up).
Didn't play in multiplayer, maybe it's more fun, but honestly is far from Yukinko's quality.

imo if you want to pick up one, just choose Yukinko (if you have a PS2, of course)

well, there are 2 different ways to play the game, classic is : use analogue stick for moving, shoot with A and use the "smart bomb" (which freezes enemies and you can do combo hits) by waggling the remote.

the other one is : move with analogue stick but point on the screen for shooting, if you get used it's very nice cause it's like targetting an enemy, very helpfull especially during boss battles, you can shoot in a direction but moving to the opposite.
and if you don't point the remote to the screen you can play as classic mode, so you can use pointing shooting just when you really need.

well the ps2 version will probably use dual analog controls -- or at least it did when it was called kikikaikai -- which should be a more elegant version of the pointing mode. i don't understand why they didn't support classic and gamecube pads. anyway, i'm glad to hear that you like the game. i'm looking forward to it.

there is the slight, slight chance that CC support could be added to the US version.
I just watched some youtube vids of Heavenly Guardian, it does look pretty nice. The Monkey King, eh, I'm warming up to it. It'd be nice to get a shooter that doesn't curbstomp me the first time I play it.

I'm pretty sure I saw the game with boxart that read "Kiki Kai World" in an advertisement within the last few days... I believe it was the Microcenter ad? The one with a predominantly red color scheme this month. It was the US release, but they could be using old boxart, since it was pretty much a logo on a swirly pattern. I can't remember if it was the PS2 or Wii version listed.
