God damn it.

We don't even have Everybody's Nintendo Channel yet, and Japan gets the goods yet again!

Hang on, isn't the US getting it's own version? (Would still be useless for me since my Wii is imported but still, I want it anyway )

Looks so cool, I love the flip 3D effect! and to think that we still don't have the Everybody's Nintendo Channel :(

So is this the same thing as the Guide button on the remote? Or like the TV Guide Channel on Cable/SAT?

Wowowow

This is much cooler than I expected.

So you can sync your Wiimote with your TV. When you select a program to watch on the guide, it goes straight to it on your TV, and then you can use your Wiimote as a remote to change channels and volume. If you want to go back to the guide, just press the home button and voila.

Also, it's communal. So, if you want to, you can share your TV bookmarks through Wiiconnect24. It's like if you had xbox live on your Tivo.

Bu, bu that's impossible! The only way it could be done is if the TV broadcast was streamed to your Wii over WiFi! And if that's the case and a US version does come out, then HOLY SHIT I CAN WATCH US TV IN THE UK!

It appears the Wiimote functionality only works with the Wii on, I'm curious to see if it automatically turns on when my bookmarked programs come on.

Then how the hell does it work? If the Wiimote is used to change channels, then how on earth do you get the Home menu to appear on screen? (Or even to change channels back to the Wii?!)

Yeah, it turns out the Wiimote has infra-red, and can act as a basic TV remote.
I'm pretty sure that this feature is included in Wii Fit, so that you can switch the channel to TV during a workout, and switch back to check your progress. (It was mentioned on the IGN Wiik in review Podcast).

By switching to the right AV channel - the same way your normal remote does it?

No, this isn't doing it through infra-red. The signal still gets to the TV even when totally covered and in different rooms. The Wii is sending the signal via the video cable to command the TV. Like how some TVs automatically switch to the relevant video input if you turn on a connected device.

Which theoretically means it could turn your TV on and off when shows you have bookmarked come on, so long as it's in standby.

Heh. You can underline parts of the summaries, show names, actors, etc, and then search the guide for other instances.

According to Nintendo's website, the Wii sensor bar is sending the signal to your TVs IR receiver. It bounces off the wall behind you and hits the receiver. They suggest putting the sensor bar at the bottom of the TV, near the receiver.

That's crazy! Wouldn't it be much easier if they just had the Wiimote send it's IR signals to the TV's IR receiver directly?

Edit Ahh, actually it does make sense, that way you can change channels without having to point at the TV (You can even be in a different room) Clever!

Man, I want this now, it looks so cool! MAKE IT HAPPEN NOA/E!

D'oh! That makes a lot more sense. Awesome. I love that they had me testing it in other rooms, and pondering how they've achieved it, only to have it be the cheapest (most ingenious) method conceivable.

Ok, that's some SERIOUSLY cool shit.

Question... what if your TV has different inputs... so I want to switch from the Wii (component) to the OTA antenna... would it still work?

Yes. It basically simulates a 'One-for-all' remote control, and is able to control both digital and analogue broadcast and cable/satellite systems. Switches to-and-from all inputs just as your regular remote does.

This could work with Freeview in the UK, I reckon. The channel information would be freely available to them via the various MUXs. They'd have to work on remote codes for the various freeview boxes and freeview enabled TVs, but it could be done. I suppose Sky and Cable wouldn't be that much harder, assuming they could get the channel info from Sky/Virgin.

edit: I think some cable boxes use a different IR frequency so that might be difficult.

edit2: Would suck to be a wireless sensor bar owner :)
