Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games for Wii and DS has sold five million copies, but another collaboration between the two iconic characters is still up in the air, Sega tells Next-Gen.

"Getting

Mario and Sonic together in the first place took so long, every decade, to make that happen," Sega of America COO and president Simon Jeffery said in a phone interview. "So I think rushing into any other collaboration is not going to happen. It's going to be fairly calculated."

Launched on November 6, the game is developed by Sega and features popular videogame characters from both Sonic's and Mario's universes, such as Tails, Knuckles, Luigi and Yoshi. Sega published the game in the West, while Nintendo published the game in Japan. The game is licensed through a worldwide partnership with International Sports Media, the interactive entertainment licensee of the International Olympic Committee.

The game has rocketed off of the blocks since its debut, topping sales charts both in the US and abroad. And while 5 million copies is a major milestone, Sega is expecting to sell even more.

"There have only been three months so far and the Olympics themselves are another four months away," Jeffery said. "We're expecting to sell quite a few million more globally, hopefully between now and the end of this year."

He added, "This reinforces what we've firmly believed--that there is a huge opportunity on the Wii and the DS to get some breakout hits, especially exploiting our intellectual properties. We're not going to be shifting our focus any, though. We're still going to be focusing on hardcore games on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, too, and really all kinds of stuff on Wii."

Oh Sega.

I'll admit I was wrong, I never thought this game would take off like it did.

But their attitude afterwards seems pretty typical of the average Wii 3rd party.

(I know, it's a dick move, but I don't think this game's success will changes the views of other developers)

Sega is doing amazing in Europe. Sonic Secret Rings, Mario & Sonic Olympics all charted pretty high during the holiday season. Sonic Riders is sold out here as well. Now start working on Sonic Adventure 3 and F-Zero WX for Wii plz.

Still is doing better than even I thought. Hell the Wii version will hit 4M easily alone.

This is just Track and Field with characters. I guess it's obvious that in general, people are still happy to buy games that were popular a long time ago.

So third parties on the Wii do not sell, then. Remember, it has Mario. It is a second party, tops. Two and a half, maybe.

I guess the point is that everything sells. There's a market for deeper games just as there's a market for shallow games with nothing to recommend themselves to the refined gamer. The markets may be smaller (for the refined games), but we both know that development of such titles as Sonic and Mario somewhat shrivels, rather than nourishes, one's soul.

YEah looks like it..

their loss really... and the sudden Wii and DS doom that the thirdparties are praying for will not happen anytime soon...

it will only make Nintendo (and some thirdparties that actually make games for the WIi and the DS ) even stronger then they already are

It's not that simple I think, although that's a big factor. The title has something in common with Wii Sports so it's a good segue for people with little knowledge about what to buy. Also there's the olympics theme of course.

Well to be fair, even with it selling 5 million, it means jack shit to Sega's future plans.

I'd love to see the board meeting where someone justified that comment.
