It's me again.
I don't have much to say about this game other than:
1. With a base team, it's hard to do special attacks.
2. You can kick and punch people! During the match! You can run over to the other side and punch people in the face and steal the ball!
3. SOOOOOOOOOOOO MANY STATS, way more than I need for a dodgeball game. In the character creation mode you can select jersey color shorts color, hair style and face style, after deciding that you determine stats. They give you 150 points to distribute and...yeah...it requires a lot of thought, considering there are like 8 people on your team.
4. Weapons drop and you can throw them at people!! Yay!!
5. You go shopping at the same store as River City Ransom!
The basic game is mostly unchanged, but the RCR influences change up the strategies quite a bit. The lethargic running still makes me mad though, I wonder why they changed it from the NES version.
Oh I forgot to mention there are special attacks you activate with the touch screen that change your teams stats in a way, make them super powerful, super fast, catch everything and so on. It's possible to get your team to nes speeds, but to be honest I wish it would just be that way from the start.
Is there an English version?Originally Posted by DarkStar

I remember getting punched in the face during high school gym dodge ball myself. It's amazing how realistic these games are getting now.Originally Posted by sp0rsk

Since I don't have the game (yet), maybe some one could also enlighten me: is it possible to make it so that you can form different formations with your team-mates? I have fond memories of making my dudes stand on each other, totem-style, in order to form another way to kick-ass... :lol
So Sp0rsk, the ultimate question - Is the game fun? Do you like it?
I do have a shinkansen ride this weekend. Might as well pick it up I suppose.
None of the Super Dodge Ball games since the NES one have got that right.
Whoever is localizing this game, INCREASE THE SPEED.
So the original still reigns supreme that's a bit dissapointing. They should just update the originals graphics include multiplayer and put it online for download.Originally Posted by sp0rsk
I must say, the running thing is big for me and it kinda ruins the pace of the game, imo.

Do you see yourself getting much more play out of it, despite the speed issues?
My DS has been collecting dust lately. It'd be nice to have another gem to play.
Which store? I need to go to Mao's. I NEED MY FUCKING PEPPER BEEF!Originally Posted by sp0rsk

This game showed up in my Gold Box at Amazon.com today, strangely enough. Amazon says it'll be out at the end of May. I pre-ordered it...$28.49 and you can punch people? I'm in.
http://ds.ign.com/articles/866/866155p1.htmlThe biggest change in the gameplay over the Japanese edition is the game speed -- we thought that it would be a subtle shift at first when we saw Aksys' reps playing the game before we got to play, but in actuality, the difference seems to be a significant change.

Be happy you guys are getting the superior version! I might just import it!

Looks like this will definitely be one instance where I'll be more than happy to support domestic.
That's cool they fixed the running because I probably wouldn't have bought it.
If its anything like Guilty Gear, then Japan will get Super Dodgeball+ with a complete story mode =(Originally Posted by Kipe
So american version plays better than the japanese version. This is like Guilty Gear all over again. Why does Aksys hate japan?:lol

It's not really AkSys's issue, though.Originally Posted by Kipe

Arc System Works/Million are the ones who originally made the game, and by all sakes and purposes, hold the original source code. AkSys is an American localization/publishing team. Once the game is in their laps for American distribution, they have the liberty to alter the original product (or more to the point, get their pals at ASW/Million to do so, in the case of these speed and item fixes) in ways that they wish, for the sake of when they set out to distribute "their version" of the product.
That's why the American version is getting the fixes. If anything, blame ASW/Million for not taking the proper measures to make everyone happy in the first place. But AkSys themselves are blameless.
And it's not like this would be the first time things of this sort happened. When River City Ransom was translated from its original Japanese counter-part, new sprites were crafted for the sake of the game (namely the kids you can see walking around), and there were other edits to be had as well.

Not so bad that it hurt the game to serious degree, but enough that it kept the game from really being as awesome as I thought it could be.
Sounds like you played the JP version then?
Well, was the Japanese version completely in English?Originally Posted by sp0rsk

I wrote Aksys meaning the entire company Arc System Works since it's much shorter to type out. Isn't Aksys just a subsidary of Arc System Works? I don't know the details.Originally Posted by TreIII

Aksys is an American publisher, they probably have a good relationship with ASW so they do a lot of their games.Originally Posted by Kipe

No, I don't think so. All of the killer moves I've done so far in the Japanese version have been the five-step-dash attacks and the jump-apex attacks. No team tricks that I've seen. I actually don't understand what the purpose of the sideline characters in this version is because of that, they're so underpowered and uncontrollable that I always just pass back to my main team unless I've got an opponent in a juggle situation.Originally Posted by TreIII

I'm not quite sure what you're talking about with the running, it does feel slow overall to me but proportional in the running and regular movement against the scale of the court ad size of the players. Between the different attacks you can do with the ball and the fighting (which is fun at the line), the pace feel balanced to me. The overall speed isn't really very exciting, however.Originally Posted by sp0rsk

There are videos out there of both the Japanese and US versions of the game. It doesn't look like it's exponentially faster in the US version over the import. They certainly didn't amp up the US version to make it a peppy version totally different from the import, it's just tuned a little.Originally Posted by shidoshi

See, I guess I must have missed the boat back with NES (I played RCR and Crash and the Boys and some of the other Technos games, but never had a friend with SDB and only played it by emulation much later), but I don't really find the 8-bit game very fun or complex... not something that would make for kick-assed classic if it was remade on XBLA. Maybe I'd like it better multiplayer, but I wonder if it's nostalgia that's keeping the flame alive for this one. The NeoGeo Super Dodge game, however, totally rocks! And the DS game, despite being slow, feels to me like the NES game but done right with some modern enhancements, whereas the GBA game for some reason annoyed me.Originally Posted by Redd

I NEED THIS GAME - even if the 1up review was a let-down (C+) .... but who cares..
thx for the impressions sp0rsk - are there any differences between the japanese and US version ?
Aside from dominating the AI over and over again and leveling there's not too much to the singleplayer. =/
