There's been a bunch of really good films that come to mind, but in terms of masterpieces these stand out;
Punch Drunk Love ![]() Although many thought PTA outdid himself with blood, in terms of sheer brass balls and creativity you can't look past Punch Drunk Love. Sandler gives a deliciously dark performance and the cinematography and soundtrack is stunning. I love how the film totally plays against expectation. Collateral ![]() While not as sprawling or perhaps satisfying as Heat, the way this very simple story unfolds with Mann's typical touches is a delight to watch. Tom Cruise also revels in playing against type in a character full of contradictions. Irreversible ![]() It's a film that's often hard to watch and digest but visually very much like the script it's shocking and just captures your attention. Oldboy ![]() Everything from the soundtrack, performances to mind-twisting ending reeks of brilliance. Just a favourite of mine. I'm sure I'm missing a lot. |

Oh shit. There's a ton.
Top 5, off of the top of my head... The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (numero uno <3) In The Mood for Love Oldboy Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind The Diving Bell & The Butterfly A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (OK, six, whatever) If I made a longer list, it would be populated primarily by films from 2007, so eh. Good decade, though, better than the last by far (although not quite as sweet as the '80s.) |

There are far too many to list.
I'll just say that I think the most monumental is the LotR trilogy which I look at as one film. One awesome achievement. It's pretty funny since I originally refused to see Fellowship at the cinemas because of how much it had saturated the public and how popular it was. When I caught it on dvd, alone - making sure nobody would know I gave it a chance, I made sure I went to see Two Towers and RotK in the cinemas. The more time passes, the more I realise how monumental these films will be to future audiences. A true epic. |
