Stolen Wii -- Can you get the VC games back in the future? #1

Ugh, I really didn't want to make a new topic, but I have really no idea about this (and I did a search, but couldn't find any topics related to this -- sorry!).

Anyway, yesterday they broke into my house and stole ALL my electronics, including my DS and my Wii (along with Fire Emblem inside, and many other games -- those BASTARDS!!!!).

To keep a long story short, what I want to know is -- in case I actually manage to get a Wii in the future -- if I can get back all my VC games and Internet Channel. Is it even possible? If it is, what should I do?

No, they are gone. They are tied to your console and Nintendo won't swap them without the actual console in their hands first. Sorry.

All these threads about being burglarized are making me uneasy and nervous.

I would actually try calling Nintendo first. In the event that they actually connect to a service, I wonder if Nintendo can find them. Of course they can always delete your user data, but then that makes the VC games unusable also which would null the concept of "no VC replacements unless the console is in our hands".

try calling them. I make no promises and am giving you no hope, but at least call them.

Did you have a My Nintendo account linked to your Wii? If so they should be able to help you because that proves which games you downloaded.

I cannot suggest strongly enough for all Wii owners to have a My Nintendo account for this kind of shit.

just thought, if that wii ever gets connected to the net it could be traced and some poor person who bought a cheap "hot" wii can get done for handling stolen goods

Please say you got renters/house insurance so you don't have to pay for this stuff out of pocket.

The reason I say he probably won't get them back (and I do agree he should try and call nintendo) is that even if he has them transferred there could still be a Wii out there with the games (if they aren't erased) and we all know how paranoid Nintendo is about this.

However, I am curious how Nintendo will answer. Code_Link, can you post back with whatever result you get from contacting Nintendo?

Yeah guys, I'll give it a shot.

I actually have no idea if I had my Wii linked to MyNintendo, how do you do that? I did have the console itself registered to MyNintendo account, along with all the retail games, but I have no idea if the VC games are automatically added via WiiConnect or something.

And no, I didn't have insurance. Double ouch, I guess.

Anyway, I'll send an e-mail to Nintendo and see what they say. Thanks for the help.

If your Wii is tied to your MyNintendo account, VC games will be added to your registed games automatically as you purchase them.

No. You need your specific wii. Go get "THEM". I hear they've been at it for years.

Check your MyNintendo Account's registered games. By linking your Wii with your account it should have done it automatically. I'd call NOA for sure.

I would imagine it might be possible, but there is no way that Nintendo and Law enforcement would commit the resources needed for a single Wii

Really? I thought you could them back as long as your Wii was tied to your "My Nintendo" account which holds proof of everything you purchased. Including instant registering of anything you get off the Virtual Console. I know everything from the VC comes up listed on Nintendo.com when I log in from crap like the check mii out channel to all games I downloaded.

Nintendo, no. Law enforcement, maybe. I doubt Nintendo would refuse to cooperate if a motivated police officer called tthem (and handed them a warrant).

I think MS did something like that once, but refused to cooperate some other time. Depends on who you talk to, I guess.

No, unfortunately they don't care. When I bought a new Wii I wanted to transfer all my stuff, and despite playing CSR roulette they simply wouldn't do it. I got them to acknowledge what I bought, it showed on the MyNintendo website, but unless your Wii is in warranty and Nintendo is doing a warranty replacement, they will not do it.

I lost around 8 VC titles and $60 worth of Wii points. Nintendo's DRM is horrid.

I think this is why, when your wii breaks you should send it to nintendo to fix/replace (even if you are out of warranty and thus have to pay) rather then just going and buying a new wii.

This happened to me around this time last year. Insurance covered the replacement, so that's not much of a problem, and I was always kinda amused by the irony that they didn't take the PSU or the sensor bar - back when third party sensor bars didn't really exist - so they had a largely useless unit at the time.

Anyhow, contacted Nintendo, and to cut a long story short: They can replace your VC titles if you can supply your Wii's serial number. Which is only printed on the Wii itself. Despite the fact that I had most of the remaining hardware - with their serial numbers - and the Wii code - which ought to be unique to that Wii - they couldn't help me.

I'll be interested to hear if you get a different story; I'm given to understand that NoA are rather more helpful than NoE, so they might be more forthcoming with help.

Ugh, that would suck. The only thing they left was the box and the console stand.

The box has everything inside, though, manuals, polybags, but I'm not sure if the serial number is even hinted there.

If what a poster said is true, write down your Wii serial number and keep it somewhere safe.

on www.nintendo.com (US) to register your unit online you register with your serial number. When I needed my DS repaired I called them, they asked for my profile info and asked if I was looking to get my DS S/N xxxxxxxxx repaired. I said yes and they started everything.

As long as you registered your system they have all the info for it online already. The only problem would be if you bought/own more than one system as you can only register one serial number per system with nintendo.com

I already had a my.nintendo.com account to get the zelda collector's disc. when it asked me if I wanted to link them when I first started my Wii I thought "heh, why not?"

Nintendo should update the Wii Shop firmware so that if you have a nintendo.com account you can link it, and if you don't have one you have to create one. especially if they require functionality like this to recover games under certain circumstances. fortunately you CAN always link your accounts after the fact. You're only screwed if you link your account and later want to link to a different account.

About a year ago, I had my house burglarized. They stole all my electronics EXCEPT my Wii, which they dropped behind the entertainment center, screwing up the drive. I called Nintendo and not only did the offer to repair my Wii completely for free, they also provided me with my DS's serial number (I had it registered with a mynintendo account) which ended up getting my DS back from the pawn shop the jerks sold it to (which lead to the crooks being caught). Not only that, but on the phone, Nintendo was extremely understanding of my situation and did a lot to make me feel like they actually gave a crap that my stuff was stolen.

Sony was about middle of the road. They did what I asked (changed my station account's password) but was all business about it. Microsoft, on the other hand, were the biggest bunch of jerks there has ever been in the history of jerks. They actually tried to get me to upgrade to a gold account when I wanted them just to change the password or otherwise make the account inaccessible, and they didn't even do that, so my 360 sat in a pawn shop for two months auto logging in to my account and getting Madden achievements. But probably the most insulting thing was that even after explaining that my house was just burglarized and my 360 taken, they'd still say things that were incredibly insensitive (like "have a nice day").

Nintendo will help you out. It's what they do.
