New Article in Edge Magazine, story via Kotaku

Quotes from Kojima:

"Game-wise, it's pretty close to the original vision: you sneak into the battlefield and can choose whether to do a stealth game or interfere with the battle more directly. But the graphic, side things like motion-blending and the size of the map, totally was not accomplished to my original vision - to my satisfaction.

"When we first showed the game engine at TGS, the staff were really proud and happy. PS3 was a dream machine, y'know, and we were going to work on this and that - and we had so many ideas. But when we actually started developing the game, we realized there were a lot of restrictions and so it turned out how you see it today. The original vision was to go ten steps further, the reality was just one step, which isn't to say we didn't progress.

I remember saying three years ago that we wanted to create something revolutionary, but in reality we couldn't really do that because of the CPU. We're using the Cell engine to its limit., actually. Please don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing the PS3 machine, it's just that we weren't really aware of what the full-spec PS3 offered - we were creating something we couldn't entirely see.

Is he just being too hard on himself? The game looks phenomenal from what we have seen so far...

Discuss.

he doesn't rike it?

Interesting. Not exactly the talk from a developer I'd expect, or want, to hear about his upcoming game that I am eagerly anticipating.

Yep. That original unveiling was extraordinarily good looking. At least we can end this argument now.

Wow, great topic. This won't be pretty.

Anyway, he's not disappointed with MGS4. He just wanted to do a lot of things, that, well... the PS3 wasn't capable of doing. He said the same thing about MGS2 and the PS2.

In the end, Kojima is never happy with what he has, and always wants more. You can't really blame him for that.

Interesting. I had no idea MGS4 was pushing the cell and the PS3 to it's limits, but it's great to hear some more candid commentary from developers. Good article.

This seemed to happen to lots of 3rd party developers on the PS3

Also sounds like a precursor to Kojima returning for MGS5

I don't even like his games (generally speaking), but even I can see the man is an artist, and according to artist's rule #1, he can never possibly be totally happy with his "finished" products.

Highly doubt it. Game looks great but games like Uncharted, Killzone are probably pushing it even harder.

I wonder what was originally inside that 'Dream Machine' that changed. Better GPU? Hmmmm.

Mods, can you please edit the Thread Title to say "Kojima disappointed with MGS4 Graphics" please... this thread might get ugly as it is, don't want to mislead those who actually want to discuss Kojima and what he said...

I think that this is the lament of every designer. They have a grand vision of what they want to do but ultimately they can't put every idea in to the game.

Exactly. Innovators are never satisfied with their own work. This is hardly the death knell for MGS4.

Pretty much. That said, this talk should be saved until after the game ships. Otherwise, you're asking for trouble. But again, two years from now he could push the PS3 even farther. Talk of "pushing the limits" this early into any of the console is pretty foolish.

Well, you can look at this two ways. Either Kojima was just being way too ambitious for his own good and had plans which just were not capable in this day and age, or he simply thought the PS3 was capable of more than it is. Probably a combination of the two. But I will say that I thought the PS3 was going to be capable of more than it is. My fault for buying into the Sony prerelease console hype.

So basically he designed a PlayStation 4 title, and was disappointed when he found out the game was being made for Playstation 3. I don't see the big deal.

But I do agree this thread is extremely flammable.

It just sounds like he thought (maybe listened to Sony a little too much) the PS3 was going to be able to do these amazing things that just weren't realistic at this time. I don't think he's disappointed in the PS3 or MGS4, but he's expressing his vision for the game may have been a little too large.

Well, the initial dev kit at least (i.e. No cell, and a more powerfull GPU than ended up in the ps3) ?

The article was a really good read. It wasn't just gushing praise for the game and made criticism where it felt criticism was due (particularly the visuals and plot).

It actually made me a lot more interested in playing the game than any 'OMG MGS4!!!! GAME OF TEH FOREVAR!!!!' posts and previews on the internet have.
