'Kung Fu Panda' wins B.O. battle. Animated feature nabs $60 million

Turns out you don't mess with a panda who knows kung fu.

DreamWorks Animation and Paramount's "Kung Fu Panda" easily won the weekend box office, grossing an estimated $60 million from 4,114 theaters and delivering the best opening ever for a DreamWorks Animation original pic after the "Shrek" sequels. Only toon to have opened higher was "Shrek the Third" ($121.6 million).

That didn't mean there wasn't plenty left over for Sony's Adam Sandler laffer "You Don't Mess with the Zohan." Irreverent PG-13 comedy opened to an estimated $40 million from 3,462 runs, further solidifying Sandler's reputation for turning out consistent B.O. hits.

Elsewhere, New Line and Warner Bros.' "Sex and the City" all but jumped the $100 million mark at the domestic box office in only its second weekend, although it still saw a sizeable decline of 63% to an estimated $22.8 million from 4,190 runs for a cume of $99.3 million.

Paramount's "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" crossed the $250 million mark at the B.O. and narrowly beat out "Sex and the City" to come in No. 3. Tentpole declined 49% to an estimated $22.8 million from 4,190 screens in its third frame for a cume of $253 million.

Universal and Rogue's horror pic "The Strangers" placed No. 5, declining 56% in its second weekend to an estimated $9.3 million from 2,477 runs for a cume of $37.6 million.

"Zohan" and "Panda" proved a potent combo in terms of overall B.O. perf. Weekend was up more than 30% over the same frame last year, when "Ocean's Thirteen" led with a $36.1 million opening, but toon "Surf's Up" only opened to $17.6 million.

Some had expected a closer contest between "Zohan" and "Panda," but "Panda"--toplining the voice of Jack Black--far exceeded expectations.

On the specialty side, Picturehouse's "Mongol" scored the best per screen average of the weekend. Film grossed an estimated $133,136 as it opened in five theaters in Los Angeles and Gotham for a per location average of $26,627, besting "Panda's" per location average of $14,584.

*click pic for fuill list/source*

i think DreamWorks Animation has FINALLY produced a flick with Shrek-like franchise potential in 'Kung Fu Panda'. Everything else up to this point has just been dire. Also, I hear it's not only best not to "mess with the Zohan" but avoid it like the plague altogether!

All 3 Matrix movies made a killing and V for Vendetta (Although they didn't direct) made ~$140,000,000.

All that hummus costs a lot of money.

Anyway, the movie wasn't as bad as I expected it to be. Maybe it's because I kept my expectations low.

Major studies are so filled with bureaucracy and middlemen that they are completely incapable of making a movie on the cheap.

Also, marketing is sometimes rolled into the 'budget' category, which I'm not sure if this is the case here.

I bet $25 mil of that was Sandler's.

As for NYC shooting, recently they've made it relatively cheap to shoot there, so much so that Ugly Betty has moved ALL their shit from LA to NY to shoot there.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's closer than most people think. Kung Fu Panda seems like it would have a bit broader audience than Wall-E does.

That's the feeling I've been getting lately too. The Kung Fu Panda trailers have always got a positive reaction from the audience when I've seen them, while the Wall-E trailers leave the audience in dead silence. I get the impression that the audience doesn't like the fact that all Wall-E can say is his name, which is in line with most adults thinking Pokemon are retarded since that's all they can say as well.

There have been plenty of cool fucking robots in films past...that talked. While I agree that Wall-E is awesome, and I can't wait to see it, I can't deny that audiences just aren't seeming to connect with the character. I think the no talking thing is what's doing it.

even if Wall-E were the stupidest fucking 3D animated movie Pixar's ever produced, it'd coast on hype alone, at this point- at least for the first week. This isn't a Ratatouille scenario we're looking at. Almost EVERYONE knows about Wall-E and wants to see it, which is actually kind of ridiculous. Women want to see it because they find Wall-E "adorable" and guys want to see it because it's about robots, while kids want to see it because it's a Disney cartoon, and the general public wants to see it because of Pixar's track record. Wall-E is made of WIN, basically.

i'll be shocked if it doesn't outpace Kung Fu Panda by a sizable margin, in the end.

From the exclusive scenes I saw at the NY Comic Con, if people dont see and Love this movie, then they are dead inside or have no taste in movies whatsoever and should not be allowed inside a theater.

That movie was an abortion gone wrong and the "message" was shallow. It wasn't particularly funny or meaningful when it was clear that it was attempting to do both.
