GameInformer inFAMOUS Issue 183 (July)
#1
Old? We'll see.
Cover story is Infamous (Game looks fucking awesome) - "Infamous begins with a serene, panoramic skyview view of EMpire City on the title screen, with the words "press start flashing". ..once you push start, a massive explosion rips through the heart of the city. Six city blocks are consumed by flame...in the center, a man named Dylan staggers to his feet." - Dylan doesn't know how he got his powers and starts out apathetic. He then becomes invest in the city...or you can choose not to be at all. - Dylan can run up rooftops, scrambles across building archtecture, and can seek cover in unlikely nooks and crannies. - Sucker Punch striving for simple controls to do not so simple things - Empire City has 3 islands - After the explosion, the city falls into chaos. A plague makes the govt. quarentine the city. Gangs are formed. - Dylan's abilities evolve throughout the game - One fight saw Dylan and his friend Zeke against a bunch of guard. A couple of choices include zapping the mobs and flinging them off the bridge, or using your electricity on the environment (i.e. power generators that may be nearby) to create explosions. - Sucker Punch says "The hero's powers and te storyline are in support of the gameplay." - Dylan cannot use firearms since his powers are "always on" (meaning he would set off the gunpowder in bullets). The powers can complicate your actions within the world. - There will be other "villians" with their own powers that come into play. As well as other normal enemies with powers. - - Infamous isn't structured like other open world games with a marker on the mini map for your next mission. The team's goal is to create a world where events unfold naturally. - For example, you're on your way to disarm a bomb, but you notice a woman in the street bleeding and screaming. Time is ticking. What do you do? Your actions affect the world at large. Hence "Infamous". - Karma system keeps track of your actions ( I assume without showing you? Not sure). Your actions affect the actions of the citizens of the city. They may fight with you or ignore you or even help fight against you. Karma also factors into how your abilities develop. 2nd Annual Sacred Cow Barbecue (rip on games that gamers put on amazingly high pedestals) - Chrono Trigger - "CT proves that RPG dorks will buy anything Japanese and doesn't make a lick of sense. For the rest of us, the game is nothing but a bunch of tired genre cliches..." - Golden Eye - "For making FPS a console staple, we'll admit Goldeneye is important. But so was the cotton gin, and we're sure not going to waste our weekend playing with one of those." - Gran Turismo - Oh, Gran Turismo. Where to begin? Or, more importantly, where to end this endlessly dull, poorly designed rust bucket?" - NFL 2k5 - "Once you strip away the fanboy EA hatred, the game isn't better than another mediocre edition of Madden." - Half Life - "The greatest FPS of all time? A lot of people would say so, and if that's true, the genre is in worse trouble than we thought." - Super Smash Bros - SSB is the Celebrity Fit Club of video games;: a bunch of flubby has-beens assembled together to engage in meaningless jumping around for hours on end." - Rez - "Gamers love a failure, and for this reason, Sega still gets more than its share of love amongst the hardcore crowd...while it's hard to sum up Rez's gameplay in human language, we'll try. You point the reticule at the enemies and they blow up! Crazy! When they blow up, the sounds are almost sorta in time with the music! Wow! Yet another legendary title that completely fails to live up to the hype." Previews: Resistance 2 - Screens look good. In MP, players are set up in squads with "rival" squads on the other time. Game determines if one squad is dominating the other and alerts the rest of your team. Points are given for shots landed instead of kills. Kill more and die less, bonuses are given out. Kill steaks mark you with a multiplier on your head for the opposing team. Fable 2 - Early in the game, you collect warrants for officers. You can choose to turn them in to them, or to crime lords. Decision affects how the city turns out after the timeskip. LotR: Conquest - From Pandemic. Looks like the spiritual successor to SW: Battlefront. Madden 09 - Uses Madden IQ. A test when you start up the game that determines how easy/hard the game will be for the user. Infinite Undiscovery - Party is AI controlled. System is similar to SO3. Not much info. Gears of War 2 - Nothing new Dead Space - Zero gravity sections in the game, a telekiesis glove as well. Killzone 2 - Nothing New Project Origin - Dev talks about some scenes. C&C: Red Alert 3 - Soviets go back in time and kill Einstein...which leads to Japan becoming a massive global power. Co-Op campaigns (27 missions). Focus on naval combat. ToS: Dawn of the New World - The main characters town is destroyed in a raid led by Lloyd Irving. NCAA 09 - Nothing new. Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War 2 - Interesting campaign structure, your forces are persistant from mission to mission, gain xp and salvage equipment from battle to customeize. Mercenries 2 - 6 factions fighting for oil, can swim now and fast travel to spots. The world is persistant and dmg lingers as long as the system stays on. 130 vehicles. Sacred 2 - drop in/out co-op Valkyria Chronicles - le olde but both english and japanese will be on the US version. SOCOM - 7 maps, (Crossroads, Desert Glory and Frostfire included), 32 players matches, 7 modes. Clan based ranking system only. Silent Hill Homecoming - nothing new Castlevania: OoE - follows SotN but before Bloodlines. glyph system equips weapons and items to her back and arms. duel wield weapons. Tecmo Bowl - hasn't changed much. can you classic or stylus controls. Tomb Raider: Underworld - can take pictures to upload, screens show Lara vs. a Kraken. Graphics look pretty good. Rumors: Silocon Knights Up For Sale (Wha?!), Tim Schafer unhappy with Activision merger and looks to shop Brutal Legend around, and a snippet saying Rush's Moving Pictures is next Rock Band DLC album after The Pixies' Doolittle. Not many rumors this issue unless it's in another segment or something. Reviews: MGS 4 - 10, 9.75 - "MGS4 accommodates player choice unlike anything I have ever seen, providing you with the tools to overcome obstacles in any way you choose." "The freedom even extends to the Boss Fights." "...a landmark gaming experience that continually astounds with it's variety, depth, and intelligence." Battlefield: Bad Company - 9.25, 9.25 - Single player campaign ok, multiplayer awesome (CoD4 type ranking system). Civ Revolution - 9, 9.25 - "Hands down, best strategy title to appear on consoles to date." Hellboy: Science of Evil - 7, 6.75 Iron Man - 3.75, 4.25 Grid - 9, 9.25 Lego Indy - 7, 7 Nascar 09 - 8, 8 Quake Wars - 8, 7.25 Ninja Gaiden 2 - 8.75, 8.5 Mass Effect - 9.5, 9.75 Haze - 6.25, 5.75 Boom Blox - 8.5, 8 We Love Golf - 6, 6.25 Blast Works - 8, 8.25 Final Fantasy Tactics A2 - 8.75, 9.25 Hot Shots Golf Open Tee 2 - 8, 8 Secret Agent Clank - 8.5, 8.5 More in a bit. What I played of the Bad Company demo was kinda crap, but where it scored that high I might have to give it another shot.
edit: nevermind, they're apparently ripping on Chrono Trigger for being put on the extremely high pedestals that it deserves to be on. not sure if I really give two shits as to what I read in GI anymore ![]() |
