Official May 2008 NPD Thread - Wii, GTA IV, and more Wii #1

Many thanks as always for NPD's continued support.

On the hardware front, the Wii continues to slaughter the competition, while the PS3 appears to get a pre-MGS bump? Or did the 360 underperform?

From the software side, it's all GTA, Mario Kart Wii, & Wii Fit, with Wii Fit obviously being supply constrained.

Hardware:

"Nintendo's Wii and NDS have captured the top two spots in terms of hardware sales for the fourth consecutive month."

"The continued success of GTA IV is not translating into big hardware sales for either the PS3 or the 360 but there may yet to be a lift in June due to gift-giving for Father's Day and Graduations."

Software:

"Coming in at number 12 on the top-sellers list, We Ski from Namco, which utilizes the Wii Fit balance board, was able to captilize on Wii Fit's cross-promotions in circulars and at retail."

"GTA IV has now generated combined sales of 4.2 million units, making it the top-selling title of the year."

"A lot of folks are interested in the battle of the bands. Year-to-date, Guitar Hero III has sold 2.5 million units compared to Rock Band's 1.3 million which lands them both in the top 10 titles for the year so far."

What shortages to begin with? There is no software to hardware bump. Price drops push hardware no single title will.

I'm really really surprised at the Wii hardware and Wii Fit stock- Nintendo definitely overpromised on both. Who would have guessed that Wii stock would be lower this month than April?

The console numbers are strange when looking at the software numbers. GTAIV on the 360 outsold the PS3 by a large margin, but the PS3 outsold the 360 by a small margin.

I thought they would, SSBB & Mario Kart are more front-loaded games, it makes sense to ship more for them.

I figured Nintendo would pump more Wii Fit into the market than that.

Unless they did and it all didn't sell through.

Wii going down wasn't a big surprise, since it had less weekly ads showing it availability in May than in April. I'm shocked at the < 1 million (< 700K) showing for Wii Fit, though. Reggie had said 1 million Day 1 ...

I'm starting to believe this whole thing about the value of the US dollar being a reason for low shipments from Nintendo to NA...

they could easily have swamped the month even more if they had the supply... I guess their thinking is it's a slow time for shopping anyway and the plan is to flood supplies in Q4...

Heh, the Wii didn't hit that magic 1 million for the month, but the other consoles didn't get much of a bump, either. Doesn't look like many surprises overall.

Wowii

PS3 didn't do great, it performed at dismal proportions. And 360 performed at abysmal proportions. Both consoles should be pushing much higher numbers after GTA IV. Wii is now performing very well on both software and hardware.
