Some new Sonic Unleashed info (RPG elements) #1

Shitty friends in minigames as well

New Sonic Unleashed info revealed in Portugese magazine

by Chris on July 3rd, 2008

sonicunleashed_maxi_pg1.jpgMaxiConsolas, a popular Portugese video game magazine, has published a new Sonic Unleashed preview this month with some juicy new tidbits about the hotly anticipated title. The preview revealed that, like in Sonic and the Secret Rings, Sonic’s abilities will be able to be improved through experience points gained throughout the game.

The magazine also confirmed that Sonic’s other friends, including Tails, will be playable during mini-games throughout the game. Other locales that will be present in the game will New York and China.

In their impressions of the game, they were impressed with the camera and how the Hedgehog Engine handles the transitions between 2D and 3D, but they noted some noticeable slowdown at some points.

oops sorry

Wasn't this one of the complaints people had about Sonic 06? The mini-games where you would play as Tails, Knuckles, Amy, ect...

The exp. points ruined Sonic Secret Rings. Halfway through the game everything worked perfectly but if you went either too fast or too slow the game was a mess. I'm interested in the city environment though, City Escape in SA2 was pretty awesome. The slowdown could be fixed before release.

It might not be exactly like Secret Rings. I doubt they'll screw with the speed or jump height.

Well, hopefully DIMPS is smarter than Sonic Team.

Leveling was originally planned for Sonic Adventure iirc, but got canned.

Hey Sega, why don't you go ahead and reveal enemies that take more than one hit to kill?

That would be swell.

Gotta hold on to some shred of hope right?

Someone should mass email that chart to all sections of SEGA, or at least get a media person to bring it to the next Sonic Team interview.

I don't wanna sound like a hopeful fanboy here, but none of that seems really game-breaking to me...

The minigame business does sound kinda bad, but since we have no information about it, I think it shouldn't be counted against this title just yet.

And I kinda liked the RPG elements in Secret Rings. But it just wasn't a huge deal...definitely not something I thought was particularly great, it was just kinda white noise.

Nothing wrong... yet.
All those elements were in Sonic Adventure 1/2 without detracting. (They had different problems)

Really, the camera and controls are far, far, far more important.

Why,yes I have. I think you guys are giving it shit just to give it shit. The RPG part of the game In Secret rings was by no means perfect, but to say its going to suck when you haven't even played it yet is dumb. I don't care how about the other crap titles sega put out, every new game that a company puts out should be given a clean slate.

The article directly referenced Secret Rings. If this is ANYTHING like that, it is a horrible, horrible idea. The game would have been decent if it weren't for that insanely stupid power up system.

Edit: Wait. Sonic and the Secret Ring's issue was it was on-rails but they slowed Sonic down. So since this is free-roam, could you maybe fix the issue of Sonic being too fast by keeping him slow, giving him all the jump abilities, and playing the game at normal speed and exploring? Now this has potential...

Right, because to say that a company can look back at an old game and evolve upon and improve previous ideas is absolutely ludicrous.

Normally I would probably agree with you, but Secret Rings was such an intelligent step in the right direction for this franchise. I'm willing to give them a little more credit.

Also isn't some other decent company holding their hand while they make this game?

Sorry to sound like mr.Sega defense force here, but people seriously need to stop using this "but it's sega" bullshit. Outside of the Sonic series which they can't seem to get right, and all those games they publish of movie licenses (read: publishes) are they seriously as bad as people like to make them out to be? The flak they get sometimes is totally uncalled for. There are far worse game publishers out there that churn out nothing but crap, but Sega has become a right scapegoat.

If they improve on the SATSR RPG elements, combined with the fact that Sonic isn't on rails this time (speed boosters every five inches of the stage not withstanding), AND they don't completely gimp you for the first hour of the game, it could be alright. Hopefully the "mini-games" are not as shite as when you had to take over other characters in Sonic 06, though. =E

One thing I don't understand about this game is turning around corners. They show Sonic drifting like in a racing game, but what if you simply fail to make the turn? If it's on rails, won't Sonic just automatically turn anyways?

No one has actually played it yet, so I guess we'll all have more accurate feelings after e3.

It's not exactly shocking that, when you rush out and disrespect your flagship series, people use that to judge you. It's your goddamn flagship.
