The Top Five Best/Worst Remakes in Gaming History #1

The last couple of weeks have gotten me thinking about remakes even more than re-releases of old games and direct sequels to generations-old franchises. It's almost always riskier to fully remake a game than it is to just put out a sequel. Imagine if Chrono Trigger DS wasn't just going to be a port? What if it was going to be fully-3D remake running on the FF3/4DS engine? Would that look right? Would it still be Chrono Trigger?

This line of speculation was behind this week's list. We went about things a little differently as well. It's the top five best remakes and the top five worst. There are a couple of items on this list that are questionably remakes, like Mario Kart Wii and Super Mario Advance 4. But the logic for them is sound. The remade tracks that show up in Kart Wii exemplify everything that's gone down hill with the series and with the GBA version of SMB3, Nintendo intentionally left oodles of new content off the cart just to make a buck.

Here's what we got down for each.

The Best
Resident Evil (GC)
Tomb Raider Anniversary (PS2)
Mega Man: Powered Up
Castlevania: Rondo of Blood
Final Fantasy (Wonderswan)

The Worst
Super Mario Bros 3 (GBA)
Mario Kart Wii
Sega Ages: Golden Axe/Outrun
Ninja Gaiden Trilogy (SNES)
Metroid: Zero Mission

I think Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes is one of the few remakes I've ever seen ridiculed as "worse than the original."

Mario Kart Wii's not a remake. Mario 3 GBA is a port (the "remake" was on All-Stars SNES).

And honestly, the only bad remakes up there are the D3 SEGA AGES stuff (which are terrible).

No Twin Snakes? Bought it like a year ago so I could replay MGS before MGS4 was released. It ruined all the good memories I had of MGS. Thanks Denis.

Super Mario Bros 3 (GBA)
Mario Kart Wii
Metroid: Zero Mission

eh? If those are among your worst remakes then I think the whole idea needed to be flushed last night

You do realize that the E-reader stuff wasn't on the cart actually, right.

The levels were on the cards themselves.

But Metroid: Zero Mission?

METROID: ZERO MISSION?

Um. Er...

METROID: ZERO MISSION!?

Justify this nonsense to GAF. Now.

EDIT -

There are some thinkers, and some men who doubt,
That a Baron of Rhymes, could carry such clout,
To post Gifs on GAF, that spread round the net,
Accept the Baron is Robotnik, and the truth has been met.

Your logic makes no sense. There are remade tracks in Mario Kart DS, and that's widely considered to be the best Mario Kart.

Mario Kart Wii is not a remake. At all.

Mario Kart? You have got to be kidding me.

What is this magical shortcut in Ghost Valley that can't be made now? For the sake of your article, you had better not hope that it's the jump three turns into the race which can be made with a simple mushroom.

And yet more complaining about the game and the "unbalanced items" with absolutely zero regard for the nature of the metagame. Two months out and it's still being thrown around...

Justify this nonsense to GAF. Now.

"Is Metroid: Zero Mission a terrible game? By no means. On its own terms, it's rather good. But as a reconception of one of the greatest, most influential games ever made, it's a disaster, taking everything that made Metroid spooky and replacing it with a thick layer of corn. Metroid was heavily influenced by Alien. Remember the petrified extraterrestrial skeleton in Alien? What if that bastard had gotten up and started bombarding Sigourney Weaver with some hack's idea of ancient wisdom? Wouldn't that have pretty much thrown the movie's chilly austerity out the window? Like so many latter-day games, Zero Mission thinks comic-book jibber-jabber is cooler than eerie silence. This lack of subtlety is echoed in the gameplay itself, which, while it controls a lot better than Metroid, is chock-full of egregious hand-holding and advice-giving — pretty much the exact opposite of the original's sprawling openendedness. Metroid is practically Lovecraftian in the way it makes you feel tiny and alone in a vast and hostile universe. Don't look for that feeling in Zero Mission. Oh, and it also mangles the most immortal climax in videogame history — the truly unsettling slaughter of a shrieking brain in a jar, followed by a hair-raising escape sequence — by tacking on a (sigh) stealth section. — PS"

Twin Snakes is one of my favorite remakes, and I even played the original MGS right when it was released.

Anyway, I never really cared for the original Metroid, but Zero Mission was awesome. I'd actually say that's one of the best remakes I've ever played.

I thought the stealth section in Metroid Zero Mission to be excellent. It was neat having something new like that thrown into a Metroid game.

Lists are funny things because everyone's bound to disagree with part of it. However, I've rarely seen a list which I've quite so strongly disagreed with almost in its entirety.

I didn't play Twin Snakes that much, nor the original MGS - so why all the hate? As far as I'm aware, it was very similar save for the cutscenes. No?

it's definitely worse than the original. the only upgrade were the graphics. the rerecorded voices, music, cutscenes and lame nintendo mascot cameos made it worst. i hope you agree with me Speevy.

... Yeah. I'm still not buying this.

"Comic-book Jibber-Jabber" consists of five under-one-minute "scenes" with no dialogue.
"Hand-holding and Advice Giving" is usually a blip to an area that you haven't been to or have no idea on how to get to that area without exploring (Unlike Fusion)
The original's "Openendedness" and "Silence" is purely a result of the original's place as a NES game
"Stealth Section" is 5 minutes and actually adds something new to the game, in which a good sign of a remake is its ability to trip up older players with something new and exciting (IE, REmake).

... Yeah, I still don't comprehend how Zero Mission is a bad remake.
