Two Chocobo games announced for the DS - S-E <3 #1

It just happened at the mega hyped event only at the SQUARE ENIX MEMBERS VIRTUAL WORLD SPECIAL PREVIEW EVENT! :o

http://www.chocobo.com/ <--- LOVE HIM, FOR HE IS CHOCOBO!

Title: Cid and Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon: Maze of Time DS+
System: Nintendo DS
Genre: Dungeon RPG
Release: Fall 2008
Official Site: http://www.chocobo.com/tokiwasureds/

A DS port of the Chocobo Dungeon game released on the Wii in 2007, with an additional story viewpoint from the perspective of Cid. It will also include a bonus job class not found in the original. Fans can vote for the job class they want to be added on the Square Enix Members site, from a list of 5 possible jobs.

Title: Chocobo and the Magic Storybook - The Witch and the Girl and the Five Heroes
System: Nintendo DS
Genre: Chocobo Adventure
Release: Winter 2008
Official Site: http://www.chocobo.com/chocobo/

A sequel to the 2006 Chocobo minigame adventure for the DS, this time it will once again use a mix of cute characters and unique graphics to tell a fairytale story with Chocobo and friends. The minigames will be improved upon from the original, and now you will be able to adventure both in the 3D field and inside the storybooks themselves.

So, a sequel to the Wii version rather than the DS game? Sweet.

Good news.

Portable Mysterious Dungeon games are always good.
I'm going to pick up the Wii one this week, probably.

For Japanese Square Enix Members, you can also vote for one out of five of these job classes for Chocobo. You state your reasons, etc. The one with the most popular response will be added into the DS game.

So, is the dungeon game a port of the Wii game that just came out?

Also, the other game is a sequel to Chocobo Tales, right?

We don't know if it's a port, per se, but...

It has similar dungeons, at least.

It is "DS+" after all, and not "2."

EDIT: Looks like it's a port after all, according to one of the articles.

Actually we do. The Watch Impress article clearly states that it is an port of the Wii game, with an additional story mode from the viewpoint of Cid, and a new job being added via the online survey.

Well then, I really want to support RPGs on the Wii (even though I know more are coming) but I think dungeon roguelikes are MUCH more suitable for portable play. Plus, Red Mage is the second best Final Fantasy class (Thief being number one, naturally).

Why would they? The game looks awful and I'm sure it's being handled by Racjin, after all they made all the FMA games for S-E.

Well, it basically looks like a cleaner KH 358/2d.

But yeah, probably Racjin, and probably from the old Enix licensing/coordinating R&D group.

With only a few months until release? So either it will be a last-minute implementation or a fake vote?

Yeah the timing seems odd for NA, but it makes perfect sense for Japan. It bombed in Japan on the Wii, and the developers are experienced on the DS as well, so time to move on and recoup them losses.

I thought it sold on par with Chocobo Tales actually? Which might be lowish for a Fushigi no Dungeon, but maybe isn't so bad for Chocobo?

Personally, I think that they already have all 5 jobs implemented. Chocobo Tales had great free DLC/password unlockables. It wouldn't surprise me if the other 4 extra jobs are unlocked later via DLC or password.

They started off similarly,

though I think from subsequent monthly data (not yet in the database because it's more a pain than the standard weekly stuff) Dungeon hasn't had quite the extra leg of Tales.

Japan-Game Charts has it at 78,030.

I suppose the audio might be a selling point for the console version?

Yeah.

Square Enix Co., Ltd: We'd like to announce...
Square Enix, Inc.: Shut up shut up shut up shut up
Square Enix Co., Ltd: Chocobo's Dungeon+, with extra content!
Square Enix, Inc: D'oh!

I'll consider "Advantage of sleep mode, portability, and new content" versus "Novelty of first disc-based new-gen Final Fantasy game rather than seventh (?) on DS".

If the DS version does make it out here it'll be the same price as the Wii version.

I don't think this will affect sales that much, it would've bombed just as badly without this announcement. :P

Based on DQ Swords and past Chocobo/Mysterious Dungeon games in the US I wasn't expecting much, but this could reach a new level. The people most likely to consider getting it at all would be us nerds who are also the first to hear of its partial obsolescence.

Hmm, I'd forgotten it was a $40 launch game. There's that in its favor.

It's kind of strange that Square-Enix reveals an enhanced port of Chocobo Dungeon on July 8th, the day the game releases on the Wii in the US!
Do they want me to NOT BUY THE GAME!?
