Comcast offers Wii with service, showcases internet gaming's best #1

Comcast, the nation’s leading residential broadband Internet provider, and video game pioneer, Nintendo, have teamed up to offer an exclusive deal available to new Comcast Triple Play customers. From today until August 17, 2008, those who sign up for Comcast Preferred Plus or Premier Triple Play package* will receive a complimentary Wii™ system, merging together the joy of a super-fun video gaming experience with the power of super-fast Internet speed.

The partnership between Comcast and Nintendo will give new qualifying Triple Play customers a free Wii system and it will also allow them to hook up their Wii to Comcast High-Speed Internet for great online experiences:

* Play friends over Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection in games like Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and more
* Surf the Internet on a bigger screen by downloading the Wii Internet Channel from the Wii Shop Channel using Wii Points™
* Visit the Wii Shop Channel to download classic Nintendo games or discover new exciting titles made for Wii

“By connecting to our high-speed Internet, it will be easy for our customers to access all the fun content and features their Wii has to offer online,” said Greg Butz, Senior Vice President of Marketing & Product Development. “The Wii offers something for everyone, so pairing the Comcast Triple Play with the Wii system provides great entertainment value for the entire family.”
While I'm sure the Wii being the lowest cost of the big 3 now and still being the hip console helped make this decision, it's pretty laughable to gamers that they're making out the Wii to be an internet gaming powerhouse. I heard one of their radio promos this morning and thought it was pretty amusing. Unless things have dramatically improved with Nintendo's service, I always had a difficult time getting Brawl matches to connect and play without lag, and I have a pretty fast connection.

I'm also curious if they're going to be able to keep up with demand. Even though this is worth a chuckle here, I'm sure they'll get a few bites. They say Wii supply is limited, I wonder how many they are going to be able to supply.

For Brawl, Nintendo needs to release a new disk that is cheap if you can prove you own brawl and attach it to the upc code or whatever on the back of the case. The new disk will include a completely revamped, mature, online mode.

Big mistakes were made with brawl. WHY did they correct them with Kart?

Eh.. the point of it is to sell Comcast subscriptions. What with the Wii being the most popular gaming system on the market and all, this is just a promotion to help sell cable subscriptions. They could have easily given away the cheapest 360 units if the demand was the same.

Because the development teams of both have 0 people in common and they were developed in parallel at the exact same time as each other?

I've never had any problems with Comcast. I have no idea why anyone has any gripe with them.

Seriously, what are you guys on? SBC DSL? That is laughable.

Nintendo has very ambitious plans with online functionality, just not in the sense of what we think traditionally as online functionality.

Cause you live in Brooklyn NY where Verizon FIOS is going to be a pipe dream for a while.

Hehe, there will likely be a voucher program that will get you a Wii when its in stock. Which means it could be months down the road. They did this with a LCD TV where we live, and it took months to get it fulfilled, since stocks were low.

Replace ambitious with archaic.

Was actually looking at comcast today, despite their bad reputation, as my satallite dish was completely hosed by an electrical storm this weekend.

Sure, another Wii might be nice but with that package I could buy another Wii every other month!

This is no deal.

QFT!

Comcast used to crucify me with how much it charged for digital cable. Add a premium channel or two and get a DVR box, and you are looking at +$100 a month easily. They also charge $40 a month for cabe internet (which I am willing to pay). My Comcast bill was $160 a month after taxes.

I got rid of digital cable and dropped back to basic cable, and my bill is now $60 a month. So - you are right - I could buy a new Wii with the money I save every three months.

All i get from comcast is cable internet.

~$45/mo for 10Mbdown/2Mb up. I like it. They have some 'download boost' thing as well. HTTP transfers go up to 1800kbps regularly. other stuff maxes around 1200kbps.

I'm not really sure what a Wii has to do with either cable or the internet, but I'm sure just putting the name on there will move a few subscriptions.

so its just a free Wii? no expanded connectivity? Well in that case I'm happy I switched to Fios. :)

I'm currently thinking about dropping comcast. I have the tripple play and the internet is really slow, I never use the phone and hardly watch live TV. Plus it seems they're slowing down torrents.

Still, it's pretty much the only choice at the moment.

Comcast rocks. You just have to know how to threaten to cancel, or cancel and then sign up again.

Right now I've got digital cable and cable internet for 55/mo. with all the HBO and Starz channels.

Their normal rates are terrible, but they always have some pretty good 6 month promotions going on.

i had comcast in college, and they were cheap for 6 month promotions, but once that 6 month promotion was over the price nearly doubled

they have the absolute worst customer service i have ever seen as well, they make microsoft look like apple in that department.

Peff. That's nothing. With the Triple Play, we were getting hammered with $239 a month. Yeah. GG Comcast. Basically, you just have to call every year (and not a month sooner,) and threaten to cancel. You'll then get all three services for $100 a month, easy.

Comcast is a joke. In late 2006, I tried them out, but bailed on them after like a month or so. I fucking stayed with AOL for more than that when I was younger, and AOL is supposed to be like the biggest turd in the history of Internet Service Providers and shit.

Comcast is pretty much leading the war against net neutrality, they are pure evil in my eyes.

I don't think I've ever dealt with worse service than Charter. I had Charter but moved not too long ago and have Comcast now. While Comcast's service is nothing to write home about, it feels first class compared to Charter's.
