Namco isnt small, why would they need Ubisoft to publish SC4 in Euroland? How long has this been going on and do they do it for other Namco games?

It's been going on for a long time, and I presume it's because Europeans are more likely to buy games from European companies. That has historically been true (Ubisoft has made the lion's share of its cash in the EU for some time, for example, as Microsoft has done in the US, and Square Enix in Japan), and many other companies have taken this approach in other regions. E.g., GTA is released by Capcom in Japan.

Of course, it could also just be a relic contract that's still being honored but is no longer meaningful.

Namco don't publish or distribute in Europe, period.

What? Ubisoft made the most money in Europe because they had/have products that appeal to the market like Settlers, Anno and whatnot. It certainly has nothing to do with Europeans buying more games from European companies.

Building and funding a subsidiary for Europe takes time, know-how and money. Apparently Bandai Namco don't deem it to be worth the investment at the moment.

We're saying the same thing. I wasn't suggesting that people buy games made by Europeans out of nationalistic pride; simply that European developers tend to make games that appeal more to Europeans.

I think Halo/Gears are a good examples of that, as well: no one here cares that Bungie and Epic are American, but it's inarguable that shooting gritty aliens in space is a particularly American interest, and consequently, American developers have a strong tendency to make those sorts of games.

Thus, Bungie's name is stronger in America than anywhere else, Square Enix's name is stronger in Japan than anywhere else, and Ubisoft's name is strong in Europe than anywhere else.

Still, what you are suggesting is that it's more likely that people will buy SC4 if it has a Ubisoft label on it rather than an imaginative Namco one. Do you honestly think people will see Ubisoft on the cover and think: Oh, that'll most likely be tailored to my tastes. Or see Namco on the cover and think: Oh, that's some obscure Japanese company, this game will not appeal to me.

That may only work for a company like Nintendo, who have a very clear-cut philosophy and then only for their franchise game. I.e. consumers know a Mario-branded game will be one with a broad appeal and family-friendly setting.

You'd know more than me, obviously, as I'm not European -- but yes, again, that happens all the time. American companies publish Japanese games here frequently (even if those Japanese companies would technically be capable of releasing them themselves), and I know that Japanese companies publish American games on occasion, too.

It is not an absurd notion and it is a very common practice. If this happens to not be the case in this instance, no problem. I didn't know that Namco publishes zero games in Europe: once that was made clear, it was obvious that the reason Ubisoft is publishing in this instance is that Namco has no lines of distribution.

What do you mean by "would technically"? Are there instances where Japanese companies have a US subsidary but still opt to have a game published by a US company? What are the examples for said common practice?

Or are you referring to companies that have no subsidary in the respective countries? Because that's a different story alltogether and does not back your claim of "it's not the games that interest customers, it's the company" and companies acting accordingly.

Cooking Mama is published by Majesco, an American company, even though Square would obviously be capable of publishing it; XSEED has published several RPGs from the Japanese market by several major publishers including Sony; and of course, Capcom has the classic example of publishing GTA in Japan.

Those are the ones off the top of my head, at least. As I said, it's not rare for foreign companies to use the expertise and brand name of a native company to better push their wares, in any market. I'm really not sure what you're trying to push here, because it is not only common in video games, it's common in practically every worldwide industry.

Edit: Another major historical example would be Final Fantasy VII, which Sony published in Europe, even though Squaresoft had already published a few games there, proving they had distribution in place (they published Secret of Mana there way back on the SNES).

So you think Majesco (and 505 games here) is publishing Cooking Mama because the Taito name wouldn't fly that well in the west? Same with the stuff XSeed publishes. These publishers have found their niche. They specialise in picking up games for western releases. If Majesco/XSeed wouldn't have picked up the titles they probably wouldn't have been published in the west.

Or are you seriously suggesting that Xseed has better expertise and brand name in the west than Sony?

Take 2 does not publish in Japan at all afaik. Bioshock was published by Spike for instance.

I'm not trying to push anything, just debating your point that's all.

Square is a complicated example because they used to have a deal with EA too. There is a SE Ltd. but for instance here in Germany basically all their stuff is published by Koch Media and certainly not because of brand recognition. FF is the brand.

No idea. We knew that Sweden wouldn't be updated anymore during summer, but for the other countries I mentionned, they simply didn't update on the day they used too, and still haven't. Be it SELL for France, GfK for AUS/NZ, mvc or edgeonline for spain, and some user on an italian forum for Italy.
I have no idea whether the regular updates will take place next week, but since they didn't last week, I prefer to assume that something is wrong and some guys are on vacation :p

I think that alternate publishers are used because of publisher brand recognition/reputation, publisher size/connections/funds etc. I very much doubt that jingoism plays a part, especially due to the fact that I doubt the majority of people buying games know where the publisher is based.

No PS2 and PSP software this week in the top 40. That's... a first. Right?

Same old, same old.

I'm surprised that COD4 is higher for PS3 than for 360 - although judging from the position, the difference is probably minute.

So when does the UK get renamed to Ninty Zone 2? Because frankly they have us under their spell totally now, total fucking domination.

There's Wall-e (#35). Thanks to the Wii, soon there will not be any more PS2 casual games.

Welp, at least we know where the PS2 UK'ers are migrating to.

I think that's last weeks chart you're looking at which was mistakenly put forward as this weeks chart in the post above. There's a link to the correct chart a few posts up (which does contain no PS2/PSP software).

Nintendo’s ‘Wii Fit’ chalks up a 4th week at No1 since launch 14 weeks ago (+13%), knocking last week’s newcomer ‘SoulCalibur IV’ from Namco-Bandai/Ubisoft down to No2 (-24%).

Nintendo remain at No3 with ‘Mario Kart Wii’ (+11%), THQ rise 1 place to No4 with Wii ‘Big Beach Sports’ (+4%) and Nintendo also do well with ‘Wii Play’, up 2 places to No5 (+12%). Activision Blizzard see retailer promotional work pay off with ‘Guitar Hero III’ climbing 5 places, back in the top 10 at No6 (+36%), taking the place of DS ‘Guitar Hero: On Tour’ which drops to No7 (-10%). Sega’s ‘Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games’ remains at No8 (+10%), THQ drop 5 places to No9 with ‘Wall-E’ (-18%) and Nintendo’s DS ‘Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training’ takes a 78th week in the Top 10 at No10 (+4%).
Write up (All Format)

SC holds up surprisingly well both All Format and Individual Format. I'm surprised.

Thanks Phife.

1) I agree, SC holds up very well, particularly for a hardcore game in a hardcore genre. The Ubisoft brand holds strong!
2) Guitar Hero seems to have taken off in the UK in a way that it hadn't previously.
3) Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii go up in sales. Again.

A part of me is so glad that Nintendo have been able to achieve this despite the lack of quality 3rd party support. Nintendo have shown that 3rd parties are not required to be a runaway winner in a generation. Even if 3rd parties jump on the Wii, and they will eventually, Nintendo have taken Sony's market share despite the fact without 3rd parties and games like GTA, MGS etc...

It just clearly shows that 3rd parties are there to make up the numbers in your game lineup and should never be the core. Sony are heading in the right direction, despite how the charts look at the moment to suggest otherwise.

Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii, Wii Play and Mario and Sonic all rising more than 10%? That's just incredible, I don't think we've ever seen legs like this before, its ridiculous.

If the expression "it prints money" didn't exist, we'd have to reinvent it. Has anyone tried some predictions regarding Nintendo earnings/revenue in 2 years, based on current WW sales rates?

It's all up for interpretation. The "winning" strategy you just described didn't help Nintendo much in the N64/GC days, and the fact that the Playstation became such a huge success, was that Sony focused mainly on strong third party support.

It's a combination of factors off course, but the "focus on first/third party" support, is not always the secured road to victory.

I'm surprised that PS3 platinum titles haven't shown up in the charts. Only Uncharted has done so, but in the UK Budget Charts (#28)
