Peter Moore said to Yuji Naka: "**** you" #1

EA Sports boss recalls losing his rag with Sonic creator
Words: Matt Cundy, GamesRadar UK

In an interview featured in the latest issue of men's magazine Esquire, former Xbox 360 top man Peter Moore recalls how he once lost his cool and said "F*** you!" to Sega dev and Sonic creator, Yuji Naka. The boardroom bust-up happened as the Dreamcast's fortunes were plummeting in the face of competition from PlayStation 2.

Above: What Peter Moore might have looked like during the Yuji Naka incident

Moore - who helped launch Sega's ill-fated machine and was working for the company at the time - wanted to find out how consumers perceived Sega compared with other games companies. He gathered a focus group of twentysomethings and asked "If these brands were people, who would they be?" Apparently, Sega turned out to be the "granddad with dementia who used to be cool but you couldn't remember why."

Moore had tapes of the focus group dubbed in Japanese and headed to Tokyo to report the doddering image of Sega to the company's board. However, when he arrived, Yuji Naka - who Moore describes as being "a tad conceited" - accused Moore of tampering with the dialogue. "I lost it," remembers Moore. "I turned to the interpreter and said, 'Tell him, "F*** you"."

Although the translator refused to convey Moore's feelings, he was pretty sure that his message got across. "Naka had lived in the US for three years, so I knew he understood. I walked out and never returned." What a badass.

Oh, and if you're curious, Moore also reveals that the focus group thought Rockstar was the "drunken uncle who'd show up with a hooker from Vegas". And EA - who Moore works for now - was considered to be "the high-school quarter back who always got the cheerleader - an arrogant son of a bitch."

Hmmm. If game companies were people. Sounds like a sterling idea for a feature...

With all the shit he had to put up with from Sega, I'm surprised he hadn't learned to swear in Japanese by then.

Good for Peter. Japanese game creators have a tendency to come off like arrogant pricks (I'm looking straight at you Yu Suzuki), so Naka probably deserved it.

I'd also never, ever want to try to run the U.S. division of a Japanese company, unless said company was smart enough to leave me the hell alone and let me do my job (and thus make every decision).

I think Moore was definitely in the "right" (or, at least, I can totally understand why he'd say that). You don't accuse someone of something like tampering and just get away with it. That's a pretty huge accusation to make -- especially without evidence.

I'd love to find out in maybe a decades time or something exactly how responsible Moore has been for EA's incredible resurgence as a fucking brilliant brand.

After the crash and burn of the Dreamcast (coincidentally the last console to ever see quality Sonic Team games as Naka systematically culled the true talent from the group) he's really gone from strength to strength with being an incredible figurehead for the X360 and now EA.

What exactly is taking Naka's Prope so long. Mistwalker and Platinum Games, both companies set up by "cast out" members of previous devs have shown, and in Mistwalkers case released, multiple titles on next-gen systems.

SEGA doesn't know how to take risks, so unless he throws in Sonic as the lead character in whatever he's working on, it's probably not going to get approved.

What has Peter Moore ever accomplished? Yuji Naka has done more for the gaming industry than he ever will. Worst of all...Moore gave away Shenmue II to the XBox.

Also, if those tattoos are permanent then he truly is a retard. I hope he gets an EA tattoo on his forehead and then they fire his ass.

I loved Dreamcast too much not to side with Moore with this one. Maybe if the console's lifespan would've been longer if Peter was listened to more.

Completely irrelevant because Prope is in the exact same position and deal as Platinum Games is with Sega, which has okayed MadWorld and Bayonetta. The irony being of course that the Platinum deal has come almost a year after the Prope one I believe, so ??????

Wow, someone has a hate on! Its well documented that if you go back through Sonic Team's achievements and history you can pin most of the talent and game design on people such as Ohshima, Yasuhara and many others that Naka saw fit to turf out of the company. Peter Moore established the Xbox as a legitamate gaming platform and if the newly positive and aggressively creative EA is down to some of his influence, then yes, he has achieved more than Yuji Naka who currently seems to be failing at establishing his own company.

When I ran focus groups we did this personification exercise quite frequently... my favorite one?

4Chan - it's the dude with a trench coat around the corner that has what you want... but you check 4 times to make sure no one is looking before you go over to talk to him.

My client was an anime-based web site... they were "roughly" in the same realm

So far all they've done is "announced" they are working on an "untitled wii game".
