Overall

"August industry sales remain strong and realized a 9% gain over last August, although the month posted the first single-digit percentage growth in 27 months"

"Despite smaller growth this month, the industry is up 32% year-to-date and remains on target to achieve annual revenues in the range of $22 to $24 billion"

"Across hardware, software and accessories, products for the Wii platform contributed 28% of total industry dollar sales for the month of August"

Hardware

"The PSP and PS3 systems achieved the greatest percentage gain of all now-gen systems. The sales acceleration of these systems, combined with the recent Xbox 360 price cuts should fuel future growth of this category"

Software[/u][/b]

"Madden NFL '09 was the top-selling game of the month, and launched with 2.3 million units out of retail doors in it's first month, besting last year's '08 title by 2%. Year after year, the industry can count on the Madden release to bring folks into stores during the relatively lazy days of late summer"

"Year-to-date, Grand Theft Auto IV remains the top-selling game at 4.8 million units sold in the U.S. through August"

"Wii Play continues its remarkable track record, achieving a 44% attach rate to new Wii hardware sales for the month. It has remained a top-10 game each month since it's February 2007 introduction"

Accessories

"Xobx Live point cards and gold membership cards represented three of the top-10 accessory items for the month which sheds a little light onto the popularity of this service to Xbox 360 fans"

No real surprises, but those Madden numbers must be awful close for Microsoft's comfort.

Impressive

Console sales are a bit low. The difference between Madden 360 and PS3 360 is huge.

Too Human?

I thought that was the game's title, not a prediction of how many people bought it.

I kid. Still, disappointing sales.

Price drop came just in time it seems, 360 slipped under 200k. Great sales for Madden and SC, mediocre for Too Human IMO.

Sony is in serious trouble if they don't respond with at least a $50 drop.

Madden 360 1.0mm
Madden PS3 643k
Madden Wii 115k

Not exactly lighting it up with the All-Play stuff. One market that has not gone to Nintendo is definitely the Madden/NHL/NBA/MLB sports game players.

Too Human, eh, decent numbers for a decent game.

Poor showing for Soul Calibur on both platforms. I know it's a niche genre now but that game can't have been cheap- even by Japan's salary standards.

If anything with the All Play brand Sports game players will look at it even less. But never the less its an improvement i think over last year where it got outsold by Xbox Madden

Hopefully you remember the story of last month's NPD?

There is only one way the great HD consoles can even have a chance at winning...

What I can say now though is that the only interesting, wild-card element of NPD Hardware for the last few months is the fight for second place, the scraps of the feast.

Nintendo's market success, their change of place from last gen to this, will be required reading for the future of both the Gaming, and Marketing industries.
