C&VG rumor: Baldur's Gate 3 #1

Baldur's Gate III rumours persist
Friday 19-Sep-2008 9:33 AM Atari has the rights but won't comment

A third instalment in the Baldur's Gate series is tipped to be in development, without original creator BioWare.

Although it won't be ready for at least another year, we've heard the RPG sequel is coming along at an as-yet-unnamed developer and Neverwinter Nights 2 house Atari - which recently released a series compilation on PC-DVD - is said to be handling the publishing duties.

The acclaimed RPG series hasn't seen a proper release since 2001's Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal, and has been the subject of constant rumour and speculation since.

A third game was even said to be in development at on-off Baldur's expansion dev Black Isle Studios, which has now been closed.

Original members of Black Isle have since founded Obsidian Entertainment, which helmed a sequel to BioWare's Neverwinter Nights.

Obsidian is a possibility then but the developer behind the third Baldur's Gate is still a mystery to us, although we've heard it's a studio more than capable of making a fantastic looking production. Speculate away.

When contacted Atari said it had no comment to make except that Baldur's Gate is "one of the properties Atari has rights to".

Well, ya, that and the Aliens game I think. But this would be after those two, if it's not even started yet.

The Witcher is more "dumbed down" than NWN2 (especially MotB). Not a bad game, but not a direction I'd want BG3 to go in. Anyway, remeber that Draft doesn't actually like BG2, which disqualifies his opinion of all things RPG.

I thought Atari was focusing on doing networked titles that Phil seems to be fond of.

I would have agreed with you if it wasn't for the fact that Dragon Age is a single player only rpg.

It will be close enough though ;-)

Give it to Obsidian, they're already making a new expantion for NWN2 and after Dragon Age comes out they'll have a new engine to play with.

Ya seriously Atari has recently published RPG's by CDProjekt as well as Obsidian. Given that those two are the most obvious choices (besides Bioware of course) to make a BG3, I'm not sure why people are going "ugh Atari ugh".

Anyway, these rumours have been appearing every now and again for years now. I'm not expecting anything at all unless I see an official announcement.

Because most probably didn't play any recent PC RPG edited by Atari.

Hopefully either this is wrong or The Black Hound is turning into a full game again (or NWN2 expansion). :)

For the love of this great series, no. There's no way anything good will come of it.
